What a fabulous bridge, shame about its successor.

Brilliant…so glad I remember it before the entrance was demolished !

My father (a Master Sailmaker in Dukes Street Brighton from 1932 and after the War into the 60s did quite a bit of business with Suter in Shoreham, also Lady Bees in Southwick. Grandfather pulled his yachts up on Brighton beach with the fishermen's boats from 1890 onwards. Good times.

I can remember walking across the concrete bridge many times whilst I was at the Grammar School from '53 to '63. It was of a good solid build, the new one doesn't sound as though it will last long though.

Excellent Roger! I remember going there in a small group taken by Mr. Bennett (our history Master) from the Grammar School in around '57 and it was jaw dropping; that started me on my love of history. I remember the dusty shelves with ships blocks and lamps and a whole host of various ships paraphernalia, all very exciting and shame on these other so called museums with their Perspex shelves, fancy lighting effects and television screens, thats not history, its futuristic clap trap.

Grandfather trained at shoreham in1915 went to france was gassed on the Somme i.In hospital in Belgium weregggran went over to nurse him. When he returned to England he completed 52 years work for fry co at portslade.Born 1882 died in 1949. Gggran born in lancing1888 died in 1973. He was born in East Preston and her lancing.had a son and daughter moved to Burgess hill in1915.

Absolutely brilliant, incredibly done. Really brings old shoreham back to life, many many thanks.

i currently work at the swiss cottage and i so badly want to see the lake cleaned out just imagine the finds there are to be had

As a child in the 70's sitting in the backseat, I remember driving past the Swiss Cottage many times to visit my grandparents in Shoreham. Now I know that interesting history. Thanks.

Love the montage, great job! Amazing how many small industries once existed at the turn of the century. barrel and box makers, carriage builders, wood and iron shops, dress and shoe makers, all kinds of manufacturing that would be put out of business by mass production performed by hourly wage earners. We blame politicians for this, but the fact is, centralized production lowered costs, making everything affordable for everyone. First the railroads then the roads with modern cars and trucks completed the transformation of small, self sufficient villages into bedroom suburbs to big cities. We have always lived in a changing world, and those who complain the loudest are the ones who cannot change with the times.

Give thanks to them men who never returned. Really good little film

Thank you for this. So interesting. Am just watching Esther Waters and they mention the servants are to have a ball at Swiss Gardens Shoreham so was curious to see if they existed.

The old bridge had character .... not like the silly impractical new thing, more like something from Canary Wharf and made out of impractical materials. The glass panels are getting smashed - Oh! what a surprise!

Pleased you like it, thanks - it always frustrates me that a lot of Shoreham's architectural history has been demolished but I guess little would have remained of Swiss Cottage by now anyway as virtually all the buildings were made of softwood.
