Here's the thing, the United States is no longer a leading nation in any measurements that matter. We are literally bottom of the barrel among all other advanced nations in healthcare cost, access, and outcomes; we have the lowest minimum wage of any advanced country; we have fallen to number 27 in upward mobility; we have the highest incarceration rate in the world, and we now have the highest rate of childhood poverty among advanced nations. What the Pledge of Allegiance teaches kids is that you don't have to be highly informed about comparative policy, or even support policies that would improve your country's status, all you have to do is buy an American flag t-shirt from Wal-Mart and say "Merica's the best!" and you are a true "patriot." Whatever the Hell hat word is supposed to mean.
