Wow, I remember when I was a little kid (7 or 8) and my Dad took me to a shop where he was surface scraping a machine and I was amazed. We live in Connecticut and he is now 83 but he did a lot of surface scraping and then rebuilt machines and finally ended up at Perkin-Elmer which produced the lens for the Hubble telescope; funny thing is he was able to climb inside of Hubble when he went to Alabama for the company. He had a stroke but I watched this video with him and he remembers the days when he used to do this...thanks for the memories Brian and you are one of the last Mohegans doing a dying art...you are very talented.

The stone is very important for de-burring and creating bearing spots, so you know where to cut with your scraper. If you use just any stone or a wet stone with the wrong texter it makes the job a lot harder. Thanks for the question!!

Why not just use a whetstone ? Just curious.

Thank you for video. This was exemplary commercial. Information opened to public, good explanation, detailed comments and specialized services advertisement. Post Scriptum: I've tried scraping - it is not easy in any mean. It requires enormous amount of patience:)

Great video Brian. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us. I like how your yellow & black inks show up well on the cast iron. I found the answers to my questions below... Which brand do you use? Where can we purchase? I regret living too far away to attend one of your classes...

I have had several request to weld repair conveyor drums. Looking at a roller bearing v block setup. But....how do I get a flat plate so I can set the v blocks on? The drums will be machined by a machinest by the tighter I can get the weld process, the lest build up and lest work on the machinist side of things. Any thought for a good setup? I only have a small lathe at the shop.

Is 100percent allowable if bearing surface is not my priority if im scraping for alignment and achieve point per inch later.

although you aren't as old as my grandfather, you brought me back to my adolescence when my grandfather was hands on and taught me trade. I can basically build a house but have diminished with age but the knowledge is there. The irony is my son has absolutely no ambition to learn hands on. Damn millennials. Brian thanx for the video.

I wonder if this works for anvils with high carbon steel faces. got no truly flat files and seems alot faster than stoning it.

YRS AGO WHILE WORKING AT CAT IN PEORIA [ I THINK IT WAS CALLED PRECISION SCRAPING ]A CREW WORKED SEVERAL WKS SCRAPING SOME OF THE LARGE WAYS / GIBS. WE COULD NEVER UNDERSTAND WHY THEY HAD TO BE HAND SCRAPED. I THOUGH ' JUST GET A GRINDER WITH A FINE STONE " AND START HOGGING THE IRON OUT , IT WOULD BE A LOT FASTER. MANY YRS AFTER I FINALLY REALIZED IT HAS TO BE DONE THIS WAY

Having to have a dead flat surface to register seems a lot like cheating! How does one create their own 'flat' to begin with? My stones are flat, I think, to sharpen my plane blades. Large 'flat' surface must be bought. Sounds like another "Here, buy THIS" video. ...aaand I'm an A hole and shouldn't comment while drinking.
