That spell on your bar that you are spamming isnt meant to be spammed. Its a execute skill that you use when they are low on health to finish them off. You should do a companion quest so you can have a companion that helps you ingame. They can be a tank, healer or dps for you depending on the weapon you equip them with.
Does this game let you follow the story solo or does it require you to be in groups for most quests? I like to group up for dungeon type content, but I prefer to lone wolf the story when I can.
I love how the intro shows the 80s show as this cool badads anime, but then you go watch an episode and you have Shredder complain like a 5 year old child

the two things
with the exception of vet dlc dungeons and a couple of world bosses you can solo everything
Every quest, dungeon, trial can be done solo... If you have enough power...
