Is This The Last Mars Waterbomber To Leave Sproat Lake? Philippine Mars Leaves Port Alberni (again)
Today I had the privilege of witnessing the sound of a Martin Mars flying boat starting its engine on Sproat Lake, near Port Alberni on what will likely be the last occasion. I pulled the information for the narrative from Wikipedia so I apologize in advance to all the serios aviation guys who are going to pick holes in it and have arguments in the comments. I just wanted something to put over the shots, really;
The Philippine Mars is the last flight-worthy example of the Martin JRM Mars flying boat.
Originally commissioned by the US Navy for ocean patrol duty the planes entered service as long range transports the first flew on June 23, 1942.
After their military service ended in 1956 four of the remaining aircraft were sold for scrap but were instead purchased in 1959 and converted to firefighting waterbombers. The Marianas Mars was lost, along with its crew when it crashed near Northwest Bay during firefighting operations in 1961. The Caroline Mars was damage beyond repair by Typhoon Freda in 1962
The Hawaii Mars was retired from duty in 2016 and relocated in August of 2024 to Victoria, BC to become the crown jewel of the British Columbia Aviation Museum.
Meanwhile the Philippine Mars was repainted in its original US Navy colours in order to be delivered to a US. On Decmeber 11th, 2024 it took off for the first leg of the journey but encountered engine trouble shortly after takeoff and returned to Sproat Lake for further maintenance. This morning we're hoping they can get all the way
The 4 Wright R3350 18 cylinder engines each generate 2500hp
driving the Mars to a maximum speed of 356 kph
and consuming up to 3000 liters of fuel per hour during firefighting operations
when it could be carrying as much as 27 000 liters of water
From our location on the shore we were able to watch the boarding of the pilots, one of whom used to fly with the friends I had with me that day. I was also able to chat with the longest serving Mars pilot John who had flow 1000s of flight over 39 years in the aircraft.
The Mars then started the engines, circled nearby to warm them up and taxied to another arm of the lake for takeoff.
After some uncertainty the fog allowed them to take off but alas another engine issue struck over Washington State and the Mars limped her back to Victoria to land in Pat Bay where it remains at the time of this video. Possibly parts or an entire engine will be transplanted from the Hawaii Mars and the Philippine Mars will continue it's journey from there. Unless there is a peculiar logistical reason to bring it back to base it's unlikely that Alberni Valley will ever here the 4 engines of a Martin Mars, again.
All footage shot by me except the forest fire clip which is used under license through MotionArray and the historical stills which are public domain.

Storm Watching in Ucluelet on Vancouver Island - Big Waves, Kings Tides and a Smashed Boat 4K
มุมมอง 11K19 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
While not as dramatic as the recent bomb cyclone storm a decent winter gale blew across Vancouver Island in mid-December 2024. As is typical with these sorts of things it's knocked down trees overnight causing power outages and road closures. We explore Big Beach, The Amphitrite Lighthouse and a few other locations including the resting place of a capsized fishing boat you may have seen in an o...

Tofino can be a bustle of activity in the summer but sometimes in the off-season you can get one of the world's great beaches almost to yourself. The first part of this video was shot on one of those days. The latter half features a few more beach-goers and surfers. The large building at the end of the beach is the Wickaninnish Inn. I thought this would be a nice counter to the more dramatic wa...

Relax time
It's got a groove. Thanks
I am able to recognize your videos now before seeing where it's from, whether youtube or tiktok. Thanks for them!
Thanks, that’s cool! There are lots of longer video like this here on YT if you haven’t found them
She's not ready to retire!
Nice clip! Good to know there are starfish around. I was last in the area this past February for 5 days and only saw one purple starfish among the rocks at Cox Bay. Hopefully populations are starting to replenish more.
Crows are my favorite bird! So smart. The Oyster Catchers may not be catching anything, but they sure are looking so cute ❤
People get excited by the eagles and stuff but the amount of character that the crows and even the seagulls can have is amazing to me
@ yes!!!
I love the subtle hues in the white water and never get tired of watching water in motion like that. One of my favourite things to do when I visit the area is to sit at the tip of Petinger Point at Cox Bay and watch the rollers come at me. I have a couple of nice videos of large waves slamming the rocks.
the most wonderful sound. a sound older than life itself on this earth
omg that's a great spot to film the storms, the rocks are beautiful. What is the island in the distance?
Those are the George Fraser Islands in Barkley Sound
where is this?

Thank you very much!
perfect choice of music...thanks pal!
I love waves and classical music! Have you seen this one? th-cam.com/video/wQDTEVPaSq0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-m4HHYbsl5L_EbdP
Unbelievably beautiful. Thanks for sending this link. I can see I'm going to be painting this!
Fantastic! A great share - thanks.
Your choice of shots through these trees is really beautiful.
Thanks. Hopefully I’ll have a chance to try some more angles from outside when it isn’t raining.
I'd love to see this wave action on a sunny day too. I paint. Plenty of artistic inspiration in these views!
You might like this in. It’s aerial footage from nearby during a wavy, sunny day last month; th-cam.com/video/bJlyKIj_ego/w-d-xo.htmlsi=iupgEmigz1R9OewV

Thanks for sharing!
Lovely, what a beautiful place
Omg I miss living in Ucluelet!! I still have the weather app stationed on there so I can compare how much more wind and storm I’m missing out on!😅 there was so much weather drama it was so unforgettable! How are those monthly tsunami warnings? Are they still doing it?
This is so wonderful, even in my declining years I can sit in my lazy boy in Duncan and enjoy the sights and sounds of one of my favorite places ever . Thank you sooo much.
I grew up south of you in NW Washington on Fidalgo Island. My mom and I loved storms and would be drawn to a rocky beach to stand in awe of Mother Nature's fury.
This is beautiful. I love the sound of waves. If I’ve had bad day, I love to listen to them. It calms me. Seeing it is also helpful. Thank you for making these videos. They are my happy time watching them.
Such beauty in this powerful action. That's gorgeous with the hint of sunlight!
I appreciate seeing the navigation buoy. Gives good perspective to the wave height
How did you fare, this last Dec 14/15
Here’s a little video from that one. Not as dramatic but the high tides were pretty interesting; th-cam.com/video/BuejKCdhURE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=k7t1qQf6rrLZanzw
Looks cold, I would hate ending up in that water
it's for our eyes only.
fish say to you " looks hot and dry, I would hate ending up on land "
@robhasenwinkle 🤣🤣
What a mighty aircraft!
French here. The english subtitles write [Music] when the engines are idling :)
I’d say that’s accurate 😍
Thanks
A great icon of Island life has left us , will they love you like we did ?
Do you know how many crew members are aboard this flight?
My understanding is that there were 8, including at least 2 media people but that was just a comment from someone on the dock so I wouldn’t say it’s a confirmed fact.
When do you expect to be in San Francisco? Where are you planning on landing? I wanna watch!
It’ll be a few days at least to repair the engine that failed yesterday. If/when they do get up in the air it’s about a 5.5 hour flight.
@@UkeeTube Thanks! You think Coit Tower would be a good place to watch? It has a great view of the central and north bay, not so much the south bay.
I can’t guess where it will land, myself. Is there a dedicated seaplane aerodrome in the bay? Likely a local aviation or military history organization will be planning a reception or something and will know
I've heard it will be ported at the Alameda seaplane lagoon, just north of the USS Hornet
@@UkeeTube There is a seaplane base in the Bay, Commodore Center, designation 22CA, in Mill Valley on Richardson Bay but I do not think it is suitable for the Mars due its large size. If I were landing the Mars on San Francisco Bay, I would advise the Coast Guard and request NOTMAR be published and land in one of the shipping channels around Angel Island. I fly a little seaplane (a Republic Seabee) which I keep at Oakland International Airport and land in the meandering channels of the Delta and on some of the rivers (Petaluma, San Joaquin, Sacramento). Plan to berth in the Alameda Seaplane Lagoon likely should be communicated to Saildrone (an outfit that builds autonomous sailing drones used for worldwide ocean data collection) because they usually have a few drones anchored in the Seaplane Lagoon in its northwestern corner.
WITH LOT RAGING FOREST FIRES in the states because global warming effect, US should MAKING/ RE-PRODUCE this AMPHIBIAN GIANTS but MODERNIZATION IN and OUT!!!!
It would be cool to see what a modern reimagining of these vessels would be like
We saw it fly over Parksville on Sunday. She was low and slow. Very cool to see her so close
God’s Glory is witnessed in ALL of His creation!
You said kilometers per hour. FU
Why is this becoming a museum piece? Is the airframe in poor condition?
That’s a matter of some debate but the main reason as I understand it is that the BC government hasn’t been contracting them for 10 years or so. Some say that the methods used in modern firefighting aren’t compatible with these aircraft and the cost to keep them running is just too high. Im no expert, if you want o read more about it all the Wikipedia article very in detailed.
It's a seventy five year old aircraft. Maintaining these old planes is prohibitively expensive.
Beautiful! I live on Salt Spring Island and the storms this winter have been epic. Our beaches are tame comoared to yours tho ❤🌊
❤ This is why I love the sound of Thunder on a clear day. Having lived on 7 Naval Air bass for the first 6 year's of my life.😊
Incredible
You have the paint job part wrong. Philippines was painted over 15 years ago in the US Navy colors.
I have no doubt you won’t be the only person who feels that the way I presented the timeline is inaccurate. In the context of the video “meanwhile” refers to the time between 1962 when the Caroline Mars was lost and when the Hawaiia Mars was retired. While I definitely passed over a ton of time I wouldn’t say I was wrong. I actually talked to John, to longest serving Mars pilot about this very subject of that timeline on the dock while shooting this video.
Thx. We were ready to greet her in Alameda today but no joy : (
Hopefully soon. Gotta be patient, she’s 80 years old after all
Yes, it will be the last one to leave.
I’m sure you’re right. There are people that think it will come back to Sproat for some additional work before setting off again but I don’t that doesn’t seem to make any sense to me
I hope it flies again soon. We who live in the Pacific Northwest forests know the value of these aircraft. When you live in a place where "fire" is a season, you get it. Thanks for the video, sir. I appreciate your efforts.
I’m sure it wil fly again but not as a firefighting craft. My understanding is that much of the equipment for that had been removed. It will fly to its place of honour and retire 😢
Thank you for sharing, What a thing of Beauty, I missed seeing it in Nanaimo the other day. However I have seen them in action overhead during the 2004? Kelowna fire.
i was on notch hill, in Nanoose this morning and saw it fly by.
Really hoped today was going to be the ticket, but no....she's overnighting in Pat Bay, near Victoria Airport, due to troubles with the #4 engine. I was surprised by a flyover in Port Alberni, last Monday. Fingers crossed for the next try. This is great footage, BTW.
Thanks. I feel bad for the pilots. I’m sure each one of those flights are emotional
Fabulous!
It is Majestic 😮!
Thanks for the video 📷 have a great day
