Secret Commander: Serra Avatar! Brion Stoutarm's EDH Deck Tech
I left Magic 15 years or so ago because of those super control decks that don't let you play the game. I'm looking into getting back to playing because Commander seems like a format where I could avoid those types of players. If a Stax player was at my table I would definitely throw everything at them even if it meant I lost the game first.
@@SilverionX I can completely sympathize with that point. I have a stax player in one of the pods I play in, but people for the most part (at least those I play with) realize that heavy stax just isn't fun to play against and choose not to.
@@MoMoVsMTG It's about the conversation, right? I actually want to play the game, if someone want to stop me from doing that, I'm going to get frustrated. Most people don't like bad vibes so It's just better if we don't play together. Other completely fine with it and I think that's what really interests me with Commander. The ability to choose to play with people that actually want you there.
Check out Godhead of Awe super underrated for protecting Planeswalkers and in token decks. It's a 4/4 flyer that makes all other creatures base power 1/1 well that's fantastic because now your 1/1 tokens trade with everything and people will be hesitant to attack your Planeswalker and if they do get through they are only doing 1 damage per creature
What about me, an aristocrats aaron
My playgroup has: Two Combo Carls, they are the longest playing guys and they are great, but they tend to build pretty strong decks [One of them always does]. A GF to a CC who is very much not aware of what they are doing/what's going on most of the time. Then we have two BCBs, myself and the fifth friend. I tend to dip over into CC because I do have a few combo decks like Necrons, but I play that as primarily a 'I build infinite dudes and swing next turn' deck, my Jodah Legendary Goodstuff however...
@@TheAngelRaven it's nice to have a repertoire of decks to choose from for whatever your feeling for the night. The longer I play, I feel like the more "combos" I throw into decks, whether they are good or not is very debatable, and jankier I try and make em 😅.
Of course everybody's got a Combo Carl in their group, it's the way you're supposed to play Commander
"Complainer Cleavon" is definitely one of the less fun ones to encounter.
Loved this clip, MoMoVsMTG. I crushed that thumbs up button on your creation. Maintain the first-rate work. Can't wait to see more posts from you.
@@KeyserTheRedBeard Hey, I greatly appreciate the kind words! Posts like these mean a lot, and inspire me to come up with commander related content+ 😁
Great video, I love your thoughts on these cards. Your mic seems to be acting a bit weird like you’re moving away and are a bit quiet. But awesome picks on the cards having seen half of them
@@halfasoul4088 hey man, I appreciate the kind words My ultimate goal is to get discussion around cards and if it inspires you who created a deck of some sort all the more better😁. I don't know what changed but this is the second video in a row where my mic is having trouble one way or another , will definitely take a look.
I think the green enchantment you were thinking of was spelunking. It reads "Lands you control enter the battlefield untapped." Not technically the same effect as it just lets the lands enter untapped rather than untapping them, but still very fun to use especially with bounce lands
also, don't want to tell you how to do your job, but your low-pass filter is pretty aggressive. I get that it's really helpful for getting rid of background noise, but it's also cutting out some of what you're saying. Other than that, I enjoyed the video
Yes that is the one! It's definitely a great effect that was definitely needed for some cool shinangins. Wotc been printing some cool gems among the ever growing power creep lol. I'll take a look at my mic settings, I do really appreciate all the feedback it helps 2 try and fix things
Nice that you make commander upgread videos even after a year that the precon is released. It keeps them fresh. :)
@@ZocLen Hey thanks, that's definitely something I thought about. Even though there might be other deck tech videos out there, some could be a bit dated for sure.
Korlash was one of mt favorite carsd when i was fiest learning this game. Such a shame they haven't printed more cards in the future shifted border...
Future Sight must have been a pretty wild experience as an introductory set to MTG. First Set I started to get into MTG was Ikoria, definitely wish I had started playing earlier on.
Great video, man. Korlash was my first commander. I'm going to try out this decklist. How have your games been from your personal experience?
I'm yet to play this version in paper, but I have a very similar deck in dimir colors that runs both Korlash, Heir to blackblade and Linessa, Zephyr Mage as the secret commanders. That one runs pretty good, but I liked the concept of running Korlash as the commander after tinkering around with the idea of making it work without blue. After doing a decent amount of play testing it, I can say it runs pretty smooth.
Hey man, awesome video! Might I suggest just turning your audio up a bit for the next one? Its a little quiet even compared to your other videos.
@@martintogren5109 I appreciate the feedback! Yes I can, I recently got a new mic that I've been trying to figure out the settings on
The primary person I never want to play against is the WUBRG William; the sweatlord who shoves all the best cards in every color together in one pile, usually supported by a nonsense commander that nets much more advantage than it should have any right to.
@@Cybertech134 WUBRG William seems like the type of guy to also say I run child of alara just for the colors ☠️
Good card to return cards from grave to hand is -Pair o' Dice Lost-,this is legal in edh format.Simple retrurn everything in grave to hand.
@@allannechio7368 that's a super neat suggestion, especially when it comes to since they have a zero CMC. Nice find
@@MoMoVsMTG Roll two d6 and some the results.3+3=6 ,the best result possible is 6+6 ,and the low result is 1+1=2.

You missed your girlfriend's ex, Toxic Tony.

Where is dirdly Dan ?😭
I'm the real durdle Dan
i am battlecruiser barry each successive deck i build learns from the weak points of my previous decks to turn my engine on faster i will try to stomp the board on turn 4 i will get archenemy status immediately from my pod the instant i drop my commander i will never change
Live free die hard 🗿
funny videos, man :D
Boardwipe Ben who runs 7 Boardwipes in every deck
"I only run child of alara for the colors I swear"
You gotta have a proper fear and respect for the battlecruiser Barry at the table. Once they get that critical mass of mana they can become extremely dangerous
I play battlecruiser Kozilek TGD and I second this message
As a pureblood mono-green Timmy, I third this message. Once we get mana legit dripping out of our ears, it’s all over.
I’m not sure what I am. I play Kalamax, and Kykar, and I want to pick up Nadu.
Nadu looks super sick, there's definitely some fun stuff you can do with that commnder
Seems to me like those commander lend pretty well towards being combo Carl or control Connor
Sounds like you may be a terrible person....
Stax HAS to go first. Then we can play a game of commander with 3 people :)
The right answer.
Very nice! Thanks for sharing this!
I detest Gary and tend to get them out of the way ASAP. It's a fun side-game in between my $taxxxing.
Where would you slot a politics focused deck?
Politician Patrick
@@MoMoVsMTG you get to be my Secret Rendezvous buddy if you hit Carl in the face real hard for me. ** wink ** ** wink **
@@MoMoVsMTG you'll be my Secret Rendezvous buddy if you hit Carl for me ** wink ** ** wink**
In fact, here have some Hunted Phantasm tokens to get the job done.
Somewhere between neutral evil and true neutral for sure. Politician are definitely corrupt 😅
Comboplayers are allways the biggest threath, since you have too little information. They could win from nowhere, at sny time
Those are the players a give a little extra love to when spreading out some damages
Combat is boring for me. I just want to try for combos that result in big burn numbers. You’ll see me coming, just not precisely how.
@@maximillianhallett3055 the jankier the better, Jank Jenkins are my favorite decks to play
As a rat player I definitely a battle combo Barl.
There's definitely a decent amount of Hybrid species out there
I really do not think you should be playing Heartless Summoning as it is a non-bo with many of your token creators like Adeline Resplendant Cathar, Elendra the Duskrose, Elenda and Azor, and Hero of Bladhold. Leyline of Sanctity seems out of place in this deck as well. 4 mana just to not be targetable, does not seem to support the Knights' plan. Since you are playing Haakon Stromgald Scourge, I recommend Crib Swap and Nameless Inversion as reusable removal spells that can be cast from the graveyard when Haakon is in there. Wonder is quite easy to get into the graveyard with Sidar's Eminence ability and should be added to give all your Knights flying.
Definitely agree with heartless the summoning, there was a time I was messing with the idea; but the deck functions well without it. As for leyline of sanctity, I always go back and forth whether to throw them in graveyard based deck to protect it from bojuka bog, endurance, Nautiloid Ship, type effects in addition to the other effects it provides. Leyline and heartless are in the sideboard/maybeboard for that reason respectively. 100% agree the changeling spell type effects though, should do that asap. Wouldn't hurt to throw wonder in there for more evasion options too.
Im a solitaire Sara
I've heard of your kind but never seen your species in person. Further investigation required.
@@MoMoVsMTG izzet extra turns
@@themecha47 I pass the turn to myself kinda player, understood 😂
@@themecha47 so combo with extra steps
I am combo carl and the biggest threats are the voltron victor and/or the stax stanley.
I’m sometimes milling sometimes battlecruising but the one closer to what I do is combo carl I guess even tho I don’t ever play infinite combos but I do like to win out of nowhere with a OTK
My favorite is the Syr Konrad, the Grim "technically isn't a infinite combo" lines 😅
@@MoMoVsMTG for me its mostly things like " i cast this x damage spell then copy it x times and direct damage all your faces" for exemple 😂
@@Aubsty the out of nowhere crackle with power hits different for sure 😂
If a combo player has 2 cards in hand and someone else has 10 cards in hand and CANT interact with simple creature combo in ANY way, then they shouldnt be playing in a pod with combos.
Deck issue
Always Stax. I can lose, but at least I want to play in game, which stax guy is making hard
More magic vs moar magic, a philosophical debate I constantly have with my playgroup
If there “isn’t a combo Carl” in your playgroup, you are the combo Carl
You either die as a battlecruiser Barry, or live long enough to become combo Carl
Your profile Pic fits ominously well with you comment
@MoMoVsMTG all hail the big brask
My first deck ever was a budget combo deck XD. Koll the Forgemaster. Infinites all the way down :P I did quickly start upgrading and there are very few optimizations I can add at this point besides dockside. And one or two others I am forgetting.
I'm a textbook Battlecruiser Barry
I feel ya. Go big or fuck off.
Lmao, dude I know exactly who you're talking about with some of these😂
knowing the lore really adds to the experience
I'm mostly battle cruiser myself, endless value engines and armies. I hate combo carls and stax
and then there's Tergrid Terry, ready to ruin everybody's day
Tergrid Terry sits down and everybody else proceeds to stand up. By Coincidence of course.
As the grouphug player with minimal wincons in my group, i don't blame them when I'm considered the threat. Turns out fast decks don't like when the slow decks get free ramp from me.
exactly - in the first scenario (voltron, GH, battlecruiser) it's not wrong to target the GH cuz they make the other two pop off so much harder
I don't have a problem playing/against these cards in casual but I think a bigger issue is people don't pull punches at casual tables if they do have higher power cards.
You forgot mentioning cEDH Cesar. The guy who brings a tank to a knife fight. What about Proxy Roxy? (Edit)
The family tree keeps on growing 😂
What about Lil Bean Benny - they seem unassuming at first but become a threat because people think they're smol beans Side note - I need that jojo proxy of kynalos and tiro of meletis
Mpcfill, has a lot of MTG Arts. I love this comment, smol bean Benny oftentimes tries to play the part of being just a little guy so that no one notices him and reassures everybody that he's not the threat
Im non of these players and it cant be copied based on how i do things irl. Which is scorched earth and i counter everything possible without counter spells
I try not to remove Commanders unless it is ABSOLUTELY necessary. Reason: they ALWAYS come back. Being perfectly honest, Stax is the playstyle that has the most of my ire (especially Brago). Mill is bad to the extent that I now have to focus on recycling (which many of my decks do) instead of drawing into answers and removal. My own playstyle is more of a battlecruiser with group hug thrown in. I do admit that I love running a mill deck if I have to go against stax.
Oh no, it's Vultron Victor what do I... I cast Baleful Strix
In response, I rogue's passage my hexproof commander 💀
Have this in my will, scion of peace. Would make a great commander i thought too! Nice build
Indeed, there can definitely be some overlap between cards for sure
yo this is a boring deck, remember edh is a casual format, do less protection spells and focus on your deck having fuel and win cons, you should never stall out and building a dreadnaught should not be the goal, the goal is to end the match while letting others play.
Yet more counterpoints... MLD: mass land destruction is absolutely fine in an environment where massive land ramp and mana doubling is prevalent. I commented about something similar to this on your last video on this topic, about Dockside Extortionist, pointing out that other players should be careful not to overextend themselves. Stax: we've all played in a pod where that one player gets slowed down just enough to keep from going off. Stax is a time management thing, as long as you don't overdo it. Combat buys time directly from other players, Stax buys time from the game, itself. Mass Discard: players are still seeing their cards, and have time to utilize at least some of those resources. If you're not going with a hard Narset lock, there are options. Board wipe tribal: board wipes are good in small numbers, but Grave Pact and Martyr's Bond effects are repeatable, indiscriminate removal, and do what you're looking to do with a wrath, if you can outrun the other permanent generators at the table. It can also save you from having your whole plan wrecked if you play it into a Teferi's Protection. As previously stated, having a board state is a privilege, not a right. If you can't keep it, you don't deserve to have it. We're no longer living in an age of bad precons and moderately-powered sets, so why are we rolling up to commander pods with our kid gloves on? Things need not be hyperefficient, but style, and swinging for the fences, matter. Broken toys make for better forethought in deckbuilding, all around.
