Thank you so much for highlighting Maine family businesses!

It's a goal for our small business to become a Certified B-Corp, but even though they claim it's possible for any size business, it's still geared toward large businesses with plenty of resources. For a small business, getting an air-quality check in our store, for example, is cost prohibitive, and the $1000 annual fee (minimum) is far too heavy a load. That equates to almost 1% of our business's annual income (if we increase sales to $150k, the annual fee goes up!), and that money is far better used as donations to charity, which we do. I have asked yearly if they'd eventually consider something like a "B-Corp Junior" certification that allows estimates and less monetary input, to encourage small businesses to certify. I hope one day they will, but for now, that $1000 goes Harvest Hills Animal Shelter, rather than a stressful certification that we may not pass because we can't track certain numbers they ask for... and the fee is non-refundable if you don't pass.

I love seeing other Maine businesses use our resources and talents to help our communities! Cheers to all of them!

We were humbled and overwhelmed with the outpouring of support and congratulations from so many amazing business owners who attended this gala. We look forward to a year of getting to know this Institute and the people who make it run so smoothly.
