    Retired Postal tech.... installed, serviced and maintained over 30 different types of sorting machines. I noticed that the Test mail in this all uniform unlike real mail. this can affect speed. Because real Mail is imperfect the mail frequently gets stuck (Jams) causing all downstream mail to crash together until the machine can sense the Jam and stop the motors. The results in damaged, sometimes undeliverable, mail. Quicker doesn't mean better for the customer only cheaper for the one doing the sorting.

    The old DB's can run 70g's an hour. The only problem with them is they are heavy maintenance-broken suffer belts, jams etc. Was an automation clerk for 4 years before I became a city carrier- not my choice plant closed down. Everything is done at night. It's fast & loud & if you're on the same machine with the same partner this job can be a blast. But it'll wear u down.

      I believe you are referencing the Siemens DBCS series sorters. The system shown in this video is NPI's Maxim which has a much higher capacity magazine, vacuum assist pickoff and auger-less high capacity stackers.

    • @NPISorters
      @NPISorters 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends on the condition of the letters that are being fed into the sorter. Our field studies have shown a ≤ .002% jam rate for properly fed letters.

  • @stuarthamilton5112

    I know it's a demo and so you've got it loaded with nice pristine envelopes, but here at the USPS when we're loading letters from a tray that's already been through AFCS, CIOSS or DIOSS, they're pretty crumpled up already. Some are bent, others are completely folded and we need to unfold them at the jogger to feed them without jamming. That's what makes a good machine, not necessarily how fast it goes, but how often it jams and how quickly and easily that jam is cleared. A good example are the vehicle registration notices the state sends out. Those things are teeny tiny, barely machinable, single ply thickness slips of paper without envelopes. They're not even made of card stock. I'd love to see how this machine handles those, or those ridiculously glossy card stock EDDM mailers that get sent out. Those things are supposed to be handled as flats, but all too often they end up in the letter machines, and they are brutal.

    Gentleman, I am looking for industry standards regarding percentages for - sorter read in error that is the sorter's fault, alias / wrong name on mail that no sorter could sort, and last but not least, mail that couldn't be sorted properly due to address database not being correct? Any and all input is most welcome! Thanks, Jim

    Looking for input on percentages from NPI and or the group ... any know industry standards regarding the following percentages? 1. Sorter Read in Error - Sorter's Fault? 2. Wrong Name / Alias on mail that no sorter could sort? 3. Mail that couldn't get sorted properly due to address database not being correct? Any and all input / feedback welcome! Thanks!

    • @deivymartinez4481
      @deivymartinez4481 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jim Mullan Having worked on sorters made by 6 or 7 different companies, as an electronic technician, I can tell you this: I've not seen a company that makes machines that also makes the directories. The companies that make the directories strive for perfection, and they come pretty darn close. I've never seen a machine misread an address in a way that it thinks it read it, but sorts it wrong. There ARE cases where it might read the return address, but that's a condition of address block finding, not misreading the address block. NPI machines will stop if they read more than X number of letters sequentially with the same zip+4. X can be set to any whole number that suits the customer. Second question: Wrong name? I've not seen a system in use that reads the name, and am pretty sure that there is no presort facility that uses one, if it even exists. All the various directories I've worked with have strictly been address directories. As far as no sorter being able to sort to, that's a function of the directory in use. Either the directory finds the address, and gives it a 9 or 11 digit zip code, or it defaults to 5 digits. If its 5 digit, it's basically taking the sender's word for it that the address is located in the zip code printed if it can't find the address in that (or any nearby) zip code. Third: if the database is not correct, then any machine using that companies database will have the same result: Mail for the problem address being coded as 5 digit. Some errors can be corrected, but which ones is a function of the particular database that is in use. If the database is not correct, it's not the fault of the machine, it the fault of the company that compiles the database, which again I've never seen to be the company that makes the sorter.

      1-cameras keeping track of labels on the mail, since it's a machine it can track stuff like that faster than the human eye 2- probably would depend on how many bin sections are added since machines like this are somewhat modular to allow for both larger and smaller distribution centers. 3- no clue but I'd assume it's Linux based
