Widows in Film: Sad, Mad or Unsettlingly Independent – a talk at Chichester Cinema
To coincide with Remembrance Sunday, cultural historian Professor Maggie Andrews will explore how the complex and contradictory portrayals of widows in films are shaped by historical context and genre conventions.
The talk, at Chichester Cinema, West Sussex, UK, will look at how tragic war widows embraced the possibilities of romances in 1940s women’s films such as ‘Young Widow’ (1946) but were heroic fighters in war films and courtroom dramas like ‘Carve Her Name with Pride’ (1958) and ‘A Captain’s Honour’ (1982).
In recent years, widows have been portrayed exerting power, dangerous, unsettlingly independent or a threat to the status quo as in ‘Mrs Harris Goes to Paris’ (2022). Alternatively, they have been represented as a sexually temptress in ‘Malena’ (2000), scheming and vengeful in ‘Mademoiselle de Joncquières’ (2018) or as convention-smashing criminals in the heist movie ‘Widows’ (2018).
Nevertheless, particularly in mainstream cinema, narratives seem to focus on propelling widows into the arms of a new man, as in ‘Widow Clicquot’ (2023).
The talk, on Sat 9 Nov 2024 lasts 90m with 10m for Q&A, and is in the Auditorium. Tickets £7.50.

Simon simoret...
Surprised that Signoret’s affecting performance opposite Oskar Werner in “Ship of Fools” wasn’t mentioned. Every star in that ensemble cast had a small role, but big opportunities to be memorable. Vivian Leigh and Lee Marvin were standouts as well.
I’m going to watch it tonight! Thanks for mentioning this!
This video is Amazing ❤
Mr. Montand was a charismatic world class philander who happened to act quite well. Ms. Signoret was a highly regarded actress who made the absolute most of her craft
He was a philanderer all right, but his behavior was far from correct on many occasions and the person who was.most hurt was his wife.
simone was a great actriss ! montand was an arrivist ! never like him !
He.treated .Marilyn badly.
The Red Shoes 1948 Number 1
Montand may have become an international sex symbol, but American audiences never warmed up to him. They didn't like him opposite Marilyn, Ingrid Bergman or Barbra Streisand.
I think that was because, even though he apparently played a rough, tough guy in some films that most of us never saw, what came across to us was a stereotypical rather soft, slimy crooner and “lounge lizard” who targets vulnerable women and only succeeds with the stupid ones.
Marilyn wondered aloud to her personal maid- if you believe her, and I do- "What does Yves see in her (Simone)? She's not pretty. Why her?"
L'intelligence
C'est vrai, mais ça ne suffit.
As a European…that is a New World mind-set…and more specifically, a very Unitedstatian one, at that…!!!
@@danielalexandrecastillomar4858 Although Marilyn.didn't realize at the time, she was a lucky girl because she got.free from a perverted man.
マリリン・モンローは、金髪だよ。 伊東智美MI6とCIA
お武家さんが、一番そういう子だから、平気なの? 伊東智美MI6とCIA
アラン・ドロンくらい? 伊東智美MI6とCIA
Simone looks so much like 'Natalie' on "The Facts of Life" here: 5:30
Poor Arthur, she's literally next to the man she's having an affair with and rubbing her t**s on him. Monroe was such a pill popping mess.
I loved her
Coppola'smovie is superficial selfsatisfactory Priscilla Bealiue depends on Presley'sname and money throughout her life untilnow Priscilla Bealiue'sexecutiveproducer?!don't besilly! Priscilla Bealiue got huge consolation money from Elvis. Elvis never thought divorcedwife'sPriscilla Bealiue occupied Graceland. Priscilla Bealiue is an ungrateful woman.because this movie is malicious.Coppola and Priscilla Bealiue mademoney to hurt him.
The quote is from the bible: The wages of fear - is death.
Yves used her then cast her aside. Olivier outright despised her.

I deal deal with pent up anger through pot. No not Pol Pot, just pot. You can get it in chocoate form if your a singer and fear of throat canver etc. Vioence achieves nothing except release pent up anger. And violence begets violence and so the cycle continues and only gets worse. Unless one breaks the cycle of violence you become the monster you destroy. To break such cycles one must forgive the monster for being the monster. Ok. You MUST forgive others to break the cycle if violence. Because then you can forgive yourself for becoming the monster you destroy.
Today she would have a face lift
Christie’s performance as Diana trapped in a palace was also heart wrenching. It’s the awful realisation that she’s trapped forever 💔💖🌸

Bravo excellently done!! 🤩
Love DARLING and loved Mr. Bogarde's work in it. A difficult film with a story and characters that are anything but likeable. The performances of Christie, Bogarde and Harvey and the direction of Schlesinger make it well worth one's viewing time. A very incisive portrait of a very particular milieu that existed for a flash instant in around the time this motion picture was made.
Beethoven is rightly a go-to to add so many cinematic moods as Disney and other directors chose to do. An excellent choice of subject so well told, PH. Chichester Cinema at New Park's Education Department is second to none with its varied programme. Bravo!
Actor grandioso 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🇪🇸
Will buy it online immediately. Thank you.
Brilliant! Yes, keep Chichester Cinema a haven for filmgoers. :-)
Excellent analysis. As the previous commentator observes, Bogarde quietly brought a greater sense of reality to the proceedings.
Well said, Mr. Hargood. Bogarde's performance brought life and depth to an otherwise partially forgettable 1960s film. John Schlesinger and writer Frederic Raphael both unfairly diminished Bogarde's performance perhaps due to their discordant feelings toward Bogarde the man.
I knew many of these, but not all. Thank you, Carol.
D?
Great conversation Dad(and Walter!). You managed to cover a lot of ground with some wonderful anecdotal details.
The Guy on the drums looks like Mark king of Level 42. Bet he's a fan of the late Jeff Porcaro!! (Legend)
Wonderful use of a live voice to convey the aria being actually sung. The spinning song from Faust.
Will it have to close down?
Sue Gilson recommended this experience, having been to the previous years' screenings - although not in Priory Park; I'm so glad that we went - we saw both Carmen - which we hadn't seen before and was simply awe-inspiring - and then WSS, which we both know well but had never seen al fresco! The weather held on both evenings, the Chi Jazz band who played until shortly before dusk, when the films started, were very good. And we sang Happy Birthday to Roger Gibson. Wow!!
What a great film! And a great way to kick off a film festival. Can't wait to see some of the other 100 films on offer at the Chichester International Film Festival from the 18th for 18 whole days. Wow!
