(FRITS #69) American Airlines Economy Class Flight Experience: AA1198 San Francisco to Dallas DFW
SEATS FEATURED:
First: Collins Millenium/MiQ seats
Economy: Collins Meridian seats
An adequate red-eye flight experience onboard American Airlines.
The slight misunderstanding I had with the Starlux ground staff upon arrival, which was partly my fault, had little impact on my connection time of 4 hours 10 minutes as I was notified that this American Airlines flight was delayed by 30 minutes, boosting my connecting time to 4 hours 40 minutes. Since I had Global Entry and TSA PreCheck statuses, I was able to pass immigration and collect all my bags in less than 5 minutes. I spent another 30 minutes waiting for my family members, taking pictures with the Starlux crews as they had coordinated, checking in for my American Airlines flight online, and walking to the check-in counter of my flight. In total, the time it took for me to connect from my previous gate to the Concourse B TSA line was 1 hour and 10 minutes, and I can safely say this could be done in less than that.
Upon arrival at the check-in counter, I still had around 2.5 hours to go before boarding time. I have purchased some baggage allowance just enough for 2 bags, but American Airlines let me check in a third for free, claiming that the overhead space may be full. This seemed to be an offer American Airlines regularly makes for full flights, even though this flight wasn't particularly full. I accepted the offer, and I was soon sent to security and my boarding gate which was in the same concourse as my previous Starlux flight. I reached the boarding gate of my flight long before the Starlux flight back to Taipei started boarding, which meant I still had more than an hour left before boarding.
Boarding was done on time according to the new boarding time, and it was orderly. The crews welcoming me in front of the door were friendly, but the rest of the crews weren't. They felt rushed to catch the intended departure time, which they managed to do at the expense of some friendliness. The cabin was fresh and in relatively pristine condition, but the floor was extremely dirty with pills, paper trash, breadcrumbs, drinks, and even someone else's boarding pass which I extremely frown upon. That cleanliness was also reflected in my seat, but that thing aside, it was relatively comfortable, user-friendly, and packed with features.
Take-off was relatively on-time, and soon after, service began in the dark. This is something I appreciate from the crews; they still wanted to serve passengers, even though they explicitly said, "We don't want to wake you up". I opted for apple juice, and they delivered just that with a pack of pretzels. One crew was so caring that she thought I wasn't being served, and she decided to check on me again. Unfortunately, she and the lead flight attendant were the two especially friendly ones. The two others were just okay, and one was rather short-tempered. The IFE was a big strong point, with plenty of contents laid out beautifully.
Despite departing around 30 minutes late, we arrived 5 minutes early. Upon arrival, I had a short chat with the crew who admitted that they "were dying, actually", which I understood. Both she and I agree that taking pictures with the entire crews were just too much given the situation and the rule that I understood, and I left, where my bags were delivered quite swiftly. That said, this flight lacked the punch factor and fell short of the expectations that the AA2354 crews built for me.

      Thanks! I only carried 15kg, so no issue with bags. On the way back, one of my bags did go a little bit over (.2kg over) but they didn't care, too (they would if you're .5kg over). That being said, I can't give you 100% assurance because at the end of the day, your check-in agent could be having a bad day and venting it out on you, but 9 times out of 10, you will be OK. Carry-on wise, no issue as long as you don't make your bags look heavy. They don't check, anyway, if your bags look OK in size. Nah, I'm still getting there. For me the airlines would usually be ok if it's no more than 0.5kg/1 pound over. I have checked bags that are a pound over on American, they too didn't care. I have even brought a carry on that's 1.5 kg over on AirAsia and nobody dinged me. That being said, I said this based on the assumption that the check-in counter is manned. Why? AirAsia's automated machine dinged me for my checked bag being 0.1kg overweight back in SIN and KUL, and the agent refused to bend over backwards. At the end of the day, it is up to each agent's discretion, or more likely, how the automated kiosks are programmed.

    Captions disappear far too quickly especially the longer ones. Irritating. Substandard quality.

    • @LoneStarFlightReviews
      @LoneStarFlightReviews หลายเดือนก่อน

      Indeed, and that's on me. FRITS episodes 52 (this), 53 (Japan Airlines 16) and 54 (American 2833) have this issue; this video was created when my video editor was bugged up with problems. I have set the subtitles to display for 5 seconds, but the caption animations took 1 second each in the beginning and the end, which is why I ended up getting a 3-second caption instead of the supposed 5 that I have set. FRITS episodes 51 and prior, plus FRITS episodes 55 (starting from my Starlux video) onwards shouldn't have this issue as I have stopped using caption animations anymore. Many people have complained about this problem on the three episodes aforementioned, and that's why I have fixed it on FRITS episodes 55 onwards. I'm still glad you called me out on this, because this one is indeed substandard compared to my recent contents.

    I didn’t know that Safran also makes ife screen as well too. I thought it’s just only Panasonic or Thales that only makes the IFE screen. This is not popular as both of them but I think this is cheaper than both of them probably. Also it has good layout selection than the rest. Thai Airways probably didn’t had enough money to buy Panasonic ife system that’s why they stick with Safran rave like Philippines Airlines. And your are right the economy seats are colins aerospace pinnacle seats as I can tell from the front part of the seats but the rear doesn’t look like it. But the back is a different style which had a cup holder ,tray table and ife screen. The ones on their A350-900 matches the website.

    • @LoneStarFlightReviews

      Safran's IFE screen and systems are previously known as Zodiac. Starlux is using the same system too. And yes - I believe these are slightly customized Collins Pinnacle seats as they look 85% similar, except for the traytable. Surely all of these can't be old gen Safran Z300s like what Air France has on their older B777s.

    Correction: A search on several marketplace sites proves that this seat model, while still in the 3510 family, is technically NOT the newer-model SL3510 used in easyJet: this is the older model. It does, however, bear some similarities with easyJet's, with the exception of the smaller traytable and armrest in newer SL3510s. Also, judging by the larger traytable and armrest, I'm banking more towards BL3510 rather than SL3510. Pelita mostly uses BL-series seats instead of SL, and the seats here are the exact same seat used by Philippine Airlines on their A320s. I have a flight booked. It's good to khear things are running smoothly. Too bad their departure gate is in another terminal (or is it a new wing of the International terminal, I heard it's a bit of a walk, but htne San Francisco is such a tiny airport anyway, compared to Asian airports these days. I like transiting TPE because for now they don't recheck flights incoming from the USA - no security line! - and returning home they let me leave my electronics in my carryon - Korea insists ALL electronics come out, and I travel with 2 phones, a phone repurposed for PMP (portable media player), an iPad, and a Surface. Hong Kong is a no-go for me as well, since Cathay has a manual security re-inspection, at the gate, for flights headed Stateside (they even ban refilled bottles! refilled at their airports own fountains!). TPE is a little drab for an international airport, and my transit departure gate is posiitively ancient. Of the region's terminals, I think Korea is the nicest (if you get past the rude transit security), Japan (both Tokyo and Haneda) are a close second, Hong Kong third, and TPE feels more regional than internationsl.

    • @LoneStarFlightReviews
      @LoneStarFlightReviews 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      TPE's Terminal 1 definitely looks ancient because it was from the 1970s - but not Terminal 2 for me. But for me, merely because of the attitude of the staff at security and the ground staff overall, I would place HND and NRT first, TPE second, HKG third, and Incheon last. As you said, Incheon seemed to be filled with people who were unhappy with their jobs. Terminal-wise, I'd say HND > NRT > ICN > HKG > TPE. Same with the PreCheck staff at SFO who rudely told me to take out laptops and shoes even though I have PreCheck and satirically told me that "you're supposed to hold your TSA PreCheck card" (tbh, this was my fault too) as if he knew I was a newbie, which I was. I was about to call a supervisor, but considering TSA said that even with PreCheck you can still be asked to remove your shoes and laptops, I call that business as usual, except for the rudeness. DFW and LAX TSA are way friendlier for me and DFW TSA even guided me on how to use PreCheck. I still managed to get past security in 2 to 3 minutes anyway, and at the end of the day, I've been through Incheon in the past and they were similar, if not worse, in rudeness. I would put BKK security in the same level of rudeness too. Terminal-wise, I have no complaints about SFO because they're way smaller than LAX which I liked. I was able to transit from the B gates back to the B gates again in just 25-35 minutes compared to the 45-55 that I took to transfer from TBIT to T4. Thanks for watching!
