Musical Modes | Scales and the Devil Tone | Yours Chordially | V Sanjeev
In this episode, I talk about the different modes and scales in western music. Starting with the pentatonic and diatonic modes and some exotic modes which have related ragas in carnatic music like Natakapriya, Charukesi, Hemavati, Misra Maand, Kosalam, I continue to talk about the Dwi Madyama Melakartha ragas like Hanumasri, Chalasri (conceptualised by Late Sri. Tanjore S Kalyanaraman) in relation to the Locrian Mode and the devil tone in Western music.
I also introduce the audience to the great Pianist/Composer Claude Debussy when I talk about the Wholetone Scale in western music.
This is a primer episode and is very important to watch without skipping the video in order to understand the concept well and to follow future episodes.

Loved it ❤...from a mad fan of meiyazhagan and its scores...also 96' has relevancy...sharing bgm....your composition at the end was really outstanding...I had a guilt feeling of not expressing my emotion to someone
@@Stoic_prem1202 🙏🏽
Very Useful
Glad you think so!
Divine and Excellent
@@PremaRangarajan thank you 🙏🏽
Very educatonal indeed. It is important for Carnatic musicians to gain a solid understanding of Western music and make meaningful comparisons and contrasts if our classical music is to gain sustenance among non-Indian origin people in places like USA. Right now, we are mostly dependent on the NRI crowd. Wish you had also demonstrated with appropriate gamakams when it comes to Carnatic ragas and also discuss if there is anything corresponding gamakas in Western music.
@@RamRamaswami thank you sir! Will save that for another episode
@@RamRamaswami also, although I have not demonstrated carnatic versions of the common modes, I did demonstrate ragas like natakapriya, charukesi, misra maand and gopriya later in the episode. Hope you listened till the end.
Very useful and simplistic presentation!
Thank you 🙏🏽
Wonderful work and well thought of Sanjeev. Enjoyed your background score, takes us to a deep thought. Looking forward to a meaningful learning.

@@shreyamhome979 glad you liked it! 🙏🏽
This was very informative. Thank you so much Sanjeev.
You're welcome! Glad you found it useful. 🙏🏽
Very good explanation and demonstration of Indian Carnatic ragas and western notes, Mr. Sanjeev. It is highly difficult to explain and do the Demo. It is like a cat on the wall. High level of concentration and subject knowledge is required. You have done it well. Congratulations! Again I feel you need different set of audience to listen, understand and to practice music who can understand the nuances and intricacies of Music. Really good.
Thank you so much! I appreciate the kind words 🙏🏽
Very interesting presentation with lots of informations pouring in! Nice to hear about Sri Kalyanaraman 's inputs.. . Incidentally, could notice your excellent singing skills ❤
@@subramanianramachandran3929 thank you 🙏🏽

Awesome Sanjeev. 😁
Thank you! 🙏🏽
Very informative inspiring intellectually stimulating presentation. For some modes, you could have played side by side both carnatic & western classical music.Brillant ! Congratulations!
Thank you sir 🙏🏽 I wanted save that for future episodes where I will be talking about compositions in specific modes. Wanted to keep this as short and succinct as possible.
Looking forward
Mother’s Grace🙏 Excellent class !!! Thanks Sanjeev
@@RadhaVijayanMFA thank you sir 🙏🏽 means a lot coming from you 🙏🏽
Highly informative Sanjeev.
Thank you 🙏🏽
Title captured my attention and brought to this gem of a content. Govind Vasantha is a rare music director in current trends. Completely heart churning that trill 5:28. Something connected with me in Meiyazhagan, at that time I was not aware of this composition. 9:38 96 also had such heart wrenching music.
Absolutely! Also, I find him using a lot of the Dorian mode instead of the usual natural minor mode which brings freshness to his music.
Awesome
Thanks!
Jonpuri ,sudadanyasi and abheri also has used romantic songs
@@venithushanth289 yes, mostly raja sir, vidyasagar sir, A R R and other older gen composers. Modern day composers use only pushpalathika. Very few tend to experiment with other ragas. Commercial cinema nowadays accepts only this scale.
Thank you, Sanjeev. Please bear with me, I’m still a novice. The second part of the video you shared is similar to a key change in the middle of a song, except it’s going from a major to a minor, isn’t it?
@@jaydoraiswami4762 yes, from a carnatic perspective it is considered a key change, since, in carnatic, the tanpura makes sure the key is constant throughout. Modifying the tanpura sruthi means a key change. It is momentary though. You can consider the major to minor as a momentary key change from major to its relative minor (D to B)
🙏
Thank you very much for the great lesson and introducing great composer eric satie.
My pleasure!
Wow!! Music truly has no boundries...govind vasantha is a national treasure in this age of emusic he sticks to originals .. another commendable musician is sean roldan ... thanks sir for sharing
@@mithranManoj-sv6rn yes, both are gems of this era!
Please continue this journey of exploring and bridging western classical music and Carnatic music
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Great music..Oppenheimer??
No, this was composed even before that! Sometime during jan 2023. Video released on TH-cam only recently . Video was filmed in July 2023 and submitted to film festivals.
அருமையான விளக்கங்கள்.உங்களது இசைக்கோர்வையும் மிக அழகு.வாழ்த்துகள்.
மிக்க நன்றி 🙏🏽
ThIs peace is a decent presentation. But the starting melody seems heard in the westen classical music.
Thank you for your feedback! The starting melody might indeed evoke a Western classical vibe as it draws inspiration from universal musical elements, It’s fascinating how music transcends boundaries and connects us through shared expressions!
A person is stuck in a situation and is deeply thinking of what to do or how to approach the situation. A lot of thoughts and old memories are passing through his mind as he thinks.
Good one 👏🏽
Ilaiyaraaja had done song inspired by Satie too. Guess..
I know he has done a song in Hemavati (Chinna thambi periya thambi movie). It is quite possible that he has done many songs inspired by Erik Satie, but I can’t think of one. Would be glad to know which one and the source of inspiration.
“KANAVIL MIDHAKKUM” from “Eeravizhi kaaviangal”, the prelude and the progression inspired by “Gymnopedie No. 1”
@@kalaimanidhan beautiful sir! Thanks for this!
Maestro Ilaiyaraaja sir has composed 3 or 4 songs in hemavathi raga. 1. Vettaveli pottalile from Nalla Naal movie and 2. Uruguthe idhayame from Nooraavathu Naal. Hemavathi is known as Romanian minor scale and simhendramadhyamam is hungarian minor scale in western musical parlance. ❤
@chandramohansowlavdepictio9706 thank you so much sir for the information 🙏🏽
👍👍👍👍👍👍
He just copied Satie. Good job copying.
Some may feel that way, but my humble opinion is that it is an inspired piece of work, though they have a lot of elements in common. As they say, Good composers borrow and great composers steal 😃
@@sanvenk yes and that was Stravinsky who said it, but he knew how to steal without anyone ever knowing it :)
@@sanvenk ofcours, its not a steal, its kind of refelection , due to inspiration..!!😊
Beautifully had explained sir fantastic ❤❤❤❤
Thank you sir 🙏🏽
Hi Sanjeev, You played beautifully❤ and explained it very well. Your composition was also great. I would love it if you could play a sample in both carnatic and western style which evokes a similar emotion and help us understand some factors are responsible for bhava in both styles.
Thank you 🙏🏽 I appreciate the suggestion and will keep it in mind for future videos!
Bro plz analyse experience by ludovico I personally feel U have the ability to analyse this masterpiece of ARTWORK

Your piece sounds really good and it feels like it can be used in some mythical epic adventure similar to the odyssey or something….
Thank you sir! Thats an interesting thought!
Nicely thought out, edited and presented. Kudos to Sanjeev and his team. A lesson in Carnatic and western music crossover that everyone MUST watch and learn from. Take some time off and watch this lesson. Won’t work if you are in the middle of reel doom-scrolling. 😮
