Microsoft Access - Roadmap Review - September 2024
A monthly review, in this case September 2024, of the status of the Microsoft Access Roadmap and the entire Microsoft Access ecosystem.
What has happened since May, June, July, August, ...?
🗺️ What is the current state of the future of Microsoft Access according to the official Microsoft Roadmap!
🗺️ What are the next priorities of the Microsoft Access Dev Team?
🗺️ Where is Access headed? What can we expect coming down the pipes?
🗺️ What can we inspire ourselves with as to the future of this great product?
The roadmap mentions the "Monaco Framework", I believe they are referring to: microsoft.github.io/monaco-editor/ should you wish to get a vague idea of what might be coming.

      The Access Dev Team has always been very poor at all forms of communication. There's no rigor in what they do on that front. They've tried all sorts of things over the years, but nothing seems to ever stick. You'd think Release Notes would be a priority, but nope, the seldom provide any at all!!! The Fixes and Workarounds page hasn't seen any updates since February. We all know there have been, and remain several issues, yet there aren't documented. There blog hasn't seen any posts since May. It's all very disappointing to say the least.

    Microsoft Access - Best Practices = Don't use it, use a real database

    • @DanielPineault
      @DanielPineault 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Nope. Every database has issues and best practices, that doesn't mean that Access isn't a great system. Like everything else, it's about mastering the tool so we get the most out of it with the least issues and effort. Add to that the fact that several of these rules apply to any database, not just Access! Then there's the whole distinction between back-end vs front-end, where Access typically can't be beat on the front-end side of things.

    Quite certain best practice is NOT to use Microsoft Access. Real databases exist, and for all other needs just do SQlite.

    • @DanielPineault
      @DanielPineault 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Nope. Access remains an excellent option! "Real databases", oh please. Microsoft Access remains ('one of the' - some people had an issue with the statement) the most widely used database in the world. It drives most businesses (even when management and IT don't realize it!). Heck, I don't know if it is still the case, but at one time QuickBooks, used by thousands of not millions of people, was an Access database! And I can give countless more examples of Access being just fine as a database. Access is one of the grandfathers of databases, brought mouse/GUI design to the database world and 30+ years later is still going. Like all tools, you need to know how to effectively work with it to get the most out of it. You also have to properly assess the requirements of each project and select the proper tool for the job. Access remains an excellent choice for a great many projects. Add to that the fact that many of these best practices apply to any database in reality, not just Access!!! Typically, those having issues with performance, file size and various other issues are those who simply ignore such best practices and choose to ignore advice!

      The 'Track name AutoCorrect info' is one of those debatable issues. Used to be an issue, not sure it still remains one, but since I never use the feature, I disable it by habit. As for Record-Level Locking it is shocking the impact it can have one a database's file size! It's one change all developers should implement. I learnt about it from a discussion where Albert Kallal explained it to someone having bloating issues.

    Extraordinary. With a multi-million user base - and thousands of developers who've been through the 'wars' helping users, this level of corporate disinterest is embarrassing. It's been my experience over 30 years, that Access is the go-to solution for small consulting companies that conduct monitoring and survey programs for their clients. Access offers rapid app development, reliable data management, relatively-easy data query ('relative for non-experts), and sufficiently-sophisticated analysis, reporting and export for these consulting companies to rest assured they're providing their clients with quality data. I continue to support at least 20 of these companies with their small, but business-critical, Access 'applications' because they cannot justify the initial and on-going cost of transitioning to cloud solutions, so they rely on Access; it feeds them, it feeds their clients, and it feeds me. How many repeats of this small-scale but valuable contribution must small business be making to society, across the Globe, for Microsoft to have apparently lost interest?

    I think where the data driven menu comes into play more is for quickly implementing a new database using the same menu system. Not a huge amount of time savings, but nice for duplicating the same accordion menu on a new setup. If you edit the html in VSCode, there is an in editor color picker that makes it real easy to change the color scheme. I'm still kicking my self in the head after developing an accordion menu system using actual controls that are repositioned around and controlling all the visibility logic. This just blows what I was doing out of the water. Hopefully the edge browser control is improved to fix all those bugs you mentioned before. Thanks for all your hard work on this.

      Thanks for the vscode tip. I use it for PHP coding, but never really done any HTML, so it's nice to learn about such features. I normally just use Notepad++, but having such tools makes me want to try it out in my next project. Thanks for sharing.

      @@DanielPineault With VSCode you can run liversever and see changes in the webpage automatically after saving the page, this saves a lot of time. VSCode also highlights any errors in your code.

      I don't see the time saving vs my current technique and pressing refresh on the browser. I'll have to try it out and see for myself. Thanks for sharing.

      @@DanielPineault It's not much, but I do like the convenience of using a form to update the menu and change the order of the menu items. The biggest thing is creating the navigation menu exactly how I want it and adding in custom logo's and such. I have started to take a deep dive into HTML & CSS lately to hopefully have the skills to create whatever I need and make it all work. The whole space is a lot better then it used to be when I first learned it back in 2014. I like the idea of the horizontal menu at the top with a mega menu drop down that automatically resizes as new item links are added or removed from it. This can all be done with HTML and CSS only which is totally awesome.

      I can understand that preference, especially since it is being used within a database after all.

    I just got around to playing with your examples on this Daniel, and I am not using your work around and it seems to be working every time without issue as long as I don't use my favorite Ctrl-Period to come out of design view. If I use F5 or used the Right-Click menu option to go to form view, it works every time. I'm wondering if they fixed the problem partially or my computer is just so fast that it doesn't have the timing problem. The only difference is I'm using a very simple function to set the ControlSource instead of your suggested code. I wanted the html files to load no matter which computer the front end was on. The only bug I encountered was due to the dashes in your form names (Invalid Character). Once I removed the dashes from the file form names, it all worked properly. Eventually, going back and forth from design view and form view does crash access, so there is that. I find access just crashes for no apparent reason while I'm developing way more than it used to. I always do debug compile and save before going to form view. Update: I put a DoEvents in the Open event code, and now everything works. Just realize that this won't work if the form names have dashes in them. Remove the dashes, and it works like a charm. Update2: Sadly, I was able to see the bug but it was very intermittent. I just kept doing Ctrl-W Enter over and over. It did show up occasionally even with your fix in. There is still some sort of timing issue going on. Update3: OK, I got it working now. I wasn't paying attention to the order you had the code. As long as the Do Loop is before the dynamic control source assignment, it all works as you demonstrated. I was so frustrated trying to get it working after that bug started to rear it's ugly head. Now I think I can rely on this and move forward with development. Thank you so much for figuring this out. ' This version works even with the Ctrl-Period method of going to form view and the form opens most of the time Private Sub Form_Open(Cancel As Integer) Private Sub Form_Open(Cancel As Integer) Do While Me.EdgeBrowser0.ReadyState <> acComplete DoEvents Loop Me.EdgeBrowser0.ControlSource = GetHtmlFileName("Menu-V-01.html") End Sub ' Put this in it's own module Function GetHtmlFileName(sFileName As String) As String GetHtmlFileName = "msaccess/" & Application.CurrentProject.Path & "\" & sFileName End Function

      Fun eh! I spent hours on all of this to figure out the whole problem and come up with the workaround. It once again shows how little testing was done by Microsoft.

    Great content as always Daniel, you enrich the Access community immensely. One solid mention than may need to be highlighted... After downloading the sample files, following the video and still failing (due to a number of errors) to have benefited from the functionality you highlighted, seems my Access v 2406 in MS Professional Plus 2021 still is using the prior browser control and not the new Edge Browser control. Unsure but the EB control may only be available in Office 365?

      I elaborate on the required build in my article on modern web browser control www.devhut.net/access-new-modern-web-browser-control/ The perpetual licenses versions 2016,2019, 2021, ... Don't normally get new features, so yes, this is only available on MS365 and future versions of perpetual versions.

    I have another crazy one! Use a file with the extension in capital letters as control source for the edge browser control. You will get lot of symbols as if you have opened it with notepad. I've tested it with images and pdf files so i think the bug happens with binary files. You can use Lcase function for a simple workaround.

    I found another bug with the edge browser control. If you put an edge browser in not the first tab of a tab control, the browser flashes the page once when loading the form. 🤦‍♂😒😭 They are making it a bit hard to replace internet explorer

    • @DanielPineault
      @DanielPineault 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Il have to test that one out. Yes, although there are some great advantages with the Edge browser control, there are major issues making it truly crappy to use. To me, once again, this wasn't properly thought out, tested, not enough feedback was collected (if any) before actually launching. When I compare it to the actual WebView2 control and what is possible there... what a letdown. Then sprinkle with Trusted Domains, msaccess/, ... oh my how things went downhill fast!
