In the seventh episode of Author Interviews, I am interviewing Steve Stark, return guest and the author of 'Violent Ends', a collection of three horror stories. I'd like to apologise for the echo you're hearing. It was an issue that myself and Steve couldn't fix, but hopefully it isn't too disruptive for you. I cannot thank you enough for your very entertaining review of my little book. You make it sound like I'm a pretty decent writer, what more can any writer ask? Thank you very much!!! I can't wait to see what you do next on your channel !!!!
A very entertaining interview. Well done!
Nice.
Thanks, John.
Well, Arron, you've done it. You've sent this book flying to my TBR list!!!! Sounds cool !!!
Thanks, Rod. I should start putting up my review of 'There Will Never Be A Rainbow' this week.
@@arronjameshook Cool ☺
A cool idea for a storyline. I'm guessing this is the best story in the collection! Looking forward to your next review!
It's definitely the best of the three.
Sounds like a cool book. Looking forward to your next reviews!
I’ve never read the story, but enjoy the old black and white movie. Thank you for sharing your thoughts 👍
Dang it I missed it, sorry I didn't get in on time, all the best to you both
It's alright, mate. We'll have to do a Dr Who livestream at point in January.
@@arronjameshook Happily, I am off early January as well
Great video, Arron.
Thanks, Bob, I’m glad you enjoyed it. I was a bit worried about it being on the short side this week.
Thank you so much for such kind words about my work! With your knowledge of literature, I feared you would find my work juvenile. It pleases me so much that you liked the little tales.
Rod, your stories are definitely not juvenile. They are really well done.
@@arronjameshook Thank you so much. What a nice Christmas present you've given me! Wishing you very Happy Holidays too!!!!!!
I feel so honored that you were willing to review my stories!!! Thank you so much!!!
I'm very happy you enjoyed THE HERO ! Thank you for the very nice review!!!
Thanks so much for the kind review of Bound by Blood. I truly appreciate it and I look forward to doing an interview sometime in the future.
I'm really enjoyed it and I'm definitely going to read more of your books in the future. Which one would suggest I try next?
@@arronjameshook For some reason, my suggestion with Amazon link doesn't seem to be going through here on TH-cam. So, I just sent you an email with my suggestion. Thank you so much for your continued interest in my fiction.
I just finished reading it a couple days ago. It was an extremely fun read!
It really is good fun. Thank you for subscribing. I've subscribed to your channel.
Sounds really good! I couldn't find the exact book, but I found a M. R. James collection for a good price on Amazon. :)
It's best to get one of the complete collections that are out there, instead of the individual original collections, as there are a handful of his stories, which were never originally collected. If you can find it for a reasonable price, the two volume collection by Penguin is good choice. My friend, Shawn, has it and it's got all of James' stories as well as being annotated. I'm going to buy it myself at some point as my collected M R James published by Wordsworth is missing those stories that weren't originally collected.
@@arronjameshook Thank you! :)
Audio?
Many thanks Arron for your lovely review of our film and for posting a link to it! Much appreciated. We made it to demonstrate what can be achieved on a zero budget (bar having access to film or video equipment of course). We chose this particular story as it's set in France, where we live. It's a bit rough in places, due to the guerilla nature of the production; we used a church in Provence that was open to the public, so anyone could suddenly appear whilst shooting a scene... like a ghost and ruin everything! In parts of the film it was a solo performance; just me; acting; doing the camera, lights and sound. We did try to adhere to the M.R.James story as closely as possible as many other adaptations of his ghost stories stray quite far away from the originals which seems rather odd, knowing how brilliantly well written and compelling they are. My personal favourite from the aforementioned, is "The Stalls of Barchester" which does stay on track and is very spooky. Our only "crime", as it were, was to add some visual effects which are not mentioned in this story of the eager and very unwise Cambridge academic! The entire shoot was made on location in the south of France with some additional rostrum shots of St.Bertrand which we visited many years before making the film; had we shot the film there it would have cost an arm and a leg, not least for gaining official access to the cathedral. However, having seen the massive cathedral in the tiny village perché of St.Bertrand de Comminges, you can fully appreciate why it inspired this ghost story (I can highly recommend a visit there).
Thank you for watching. Given what I imagine was a shoestring budget, you produced a great adaptation. Would you be interested in doing an interview about the film and your interest in M. R. James' ghost stories in general?
I shall have to check this out once my buying ban ends, fantasy is my go to and this feels like my vibe, side point, some D&d novels are well worth a read even if you have never/will never actually play. cheers bud for sharing
Thanks, Ven. Can you recommend any particular D&D novels?
@arronjameshook the ones I have read tend to be series, the various Drizzt books are all good but their are so many of them. I personally like the Cleric Quintet which you can get in one mega addition. I don't know why but a deranged dwarf druid with a green beard called Pikel never gets old to me
A great review. I like the detail. Sounds like a really neat book!
Thanks, Rod. It's really good and very accessible.
If you like Tolkien & C. S. Lewis, you might be interested in some of my books as well: THE REVENANTS AND THE TOMB, THE WIZARD'S STONE, and THE REVENANT AND THE CULT, BOOK ONE & BOOK TWO (coming out in March).
Hi, Herman. I'm happy to read your books. I'll add them to my amazon wishlist. I'll let you know when I'm going to read them. I've just subscribed to your channel.
Thank you for the awesome review.‘I’m glad you enjoyed your time with the book.
Thanks, John. I can't wait to read Lionheart.
Writing a good solid ghost story is quite harder to do than many may think, few writers really pull it off. I am looking forward to your reviews in this event, and learning more about M. R. James' works. :)
Thanks, Rod. I should the first three review up tomorrow.
I look forward to hearing more about these tales, my ghost story knowledge is oddly lacking
They're really worth a read or a listen to. I should have the first three reviews up tomorrow.
Really digging that artwork!
The sound is so low it's very hard to hear you.
Not sure how I managed to watch mail 1 and 3 but somehow miss this one 🤦♂️. I do like the cover
I've done that myself on a occasion. The cover is great.
nice
Fascinating. This book renders in my mind as the Lemarchand Configuration. I'm not sure what to make of it. Your review intrigued me, I read some reviews on Amazon, and even read the sample provided by Amazon. Certainly well written. Entertaining. But, a puzzle. Is it science fiction? A sort of spy novel? Both? Neither? Hmm, something tells me it will find its way to my TBR. :)
It's very much a spy/conspiracy thriller, but very much influenced by classic science fiction. Neovictorian mentioned Robert A. Heinlein as an influence in his author's note.
Bound by Blood rings a bell, as does the cover, just can't quite place where I have seen it. I look forward to hearing your thougts
Bound by Blood sounds interesting! I think for it to really work, it would need to be original in storyline and any twists it provides. Very much looking forward to your review of this story!
Really looking forward to hearing your thoughts on my book.
A great review!!!! I absolutely loved this story!!!! Love and Horror, ahhh, what a wonderful blend :)
That is a wonderful cover! Looking forward to seeing your reviews of this one!!!
I am so honored you are willing to read my stories. I sure hope you enjoy them! :)
I'm looking forward to reading them.
I'm not familiar with the books or writers from these last couple mail videos, but that's not surprising since I'm not very knowledgeable about horror in general. After reading some of the classics when I was younger, I sort of drifted away from the genre -- not because I necessarily disliked it; I just became distracted by other things. I recently was recommended a collection of short stories by Laird Barron and really enjoyed those. I've since picked up some other collections from more recent horror writers, and plan to check them out soon. I'll have to scan through your uploads for some other material I might like to try as well. Have a good one!
Arron, to be a good writer takes only to be a good storyteller. No one knows if they can write until they... Write! Go for it!!! This was a very interesting interview. Well done. Submissions are OPEN at my press too. You should consider submitting a tale. :)
Should have!
That's very much my view. It would've avoid the 46 years rule of the National Party and the current kleptocracy of the ANC, which I see largely as two sides of the same coin.
Hello friend! I am finally catching up! I'm excited for this and I can't wait. i have never read anything to do with Christmas - I don't know why but I never have. Maybe this can break that. Fantastic video, keep up the good work friend!
Thanks, Noah. I'm sure you'll enjoy James' ghost stories and I can recommend the BBC adaptations, especially 'Oh, Whistle and I'll Come to You' and 'A Warning to the Curious'.
I'm looking forward to it! ❤
Me too!
Your cat hahah
I know. It's his world, I'm just living in it.
I’m glad you got so much out of it. Fair to say you picked up more of the parallels than I did- the CND I got, but not what happened in Czechoslovakia in the ‘40s!
A really good insight to self publishing and good motivation. Thank you!
