Day of Giving: Juilliard and Waldorf Astoria Residences New York
Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good.
This Tuesday, November 29, Waldorf Astoria Residences New York is honored to support The Juilliard School for Giving Tuesday to encourage the next generation of groundbreaking musicians, dancers, and actors at a fellow New York City cultural institution.
Waldorf Astoria New York, combined in 1897, and The Juilliard School established in 1905, have both played important roles in the history of the performing arts in New York City. When Waldorf Astoria New York opened on Park Avenue in 1931, renowned Broadway composer and songwriter Cole Porter was an early resident at Waldorf Astoria Residences New York, and wrote some of his most iconic songs on a 1907 Steinway & Sons piano in his suite. Porter’s piano, aptly named High Society, is prominently displayed in the Waldorf Astoria Residences New York Residential Gallery until it is returned to the hotel’s iconic clock lobby to entertain guests and residents upon reopening.
To celebrate this day of giving, Juilliard students performed their arrangement of “It Had To Be You” on Cole Porter’s historic Steinway piano in the Residential Gallery. “It Had To Be You,” composed by Isham Jones with lyrics by Gus Kahn in 1924, has been performed by musical luminaries including Waldorf Astoria resident Frank Sinatra and frequent Waldorf Astoria performers Tony Bennett and Ella Fitzgerald. And this jazz-infused version by Juilliard students, featuring Georgia Heers on vocals, Joel Wenhardt on piano, and Raul Reyes on bass, adds a new touch and tone to this famous standard.
Today, Juilliard offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in dance, drama, and music to more than 800 artists from 43 states and 44 countries. Please consider donating to Juilliard’s scholarship program at the link: giving.juilliard.edu/givingtuesday

Celebrated French interior designer Jean-Louis Deniot considered every detail of the bright, modern residences. “I wanted the backdrop to be as captivating as possible, without being overpowering,” Deniot says. Handcrafted finishes, natural materials, and subtle Art Deco references, such as bronze accents, bring a sense of history to gracious contemporary spaces. In homage to the Waldorf Astori...

My relationship with the Waldorf Astoria started with the Pennsylvania Society. The Pennsylvania Society is a society of politicians and business leaders who would travel to New York City for an annual dinner at the Waldorf Astoria. During this annual dinner, my uncle Michael would host this cocktail party. He’d do it in different suites in the Waldorf Towers. The last decade of Michael’s party...

I was 23 when I started working at the Waldorf Astoria in the housekeeping department. I was just out of college. I lived at home in Paramus for the first three months until I found an apartment. It was a great time in New York. I had keys to every room; that was kind of empowering. It was my job to go in and check those suites. I would go from suite to suite and a little knock and say, “checki...

I was born in NYC and I frequented the Waldorf with my family. When I met my now-husband Nick and we were making wedding plans, I knew immediately that we would be having our moments at the Waldorf. We stayed in a suite which became an important suite: 27Y. That’s when the time capsule plot began. On our one-year anniversary, we got our room again, 27Y. I brought along some of our wedding pictu...

At the Waldorf, I was the director of events, the senior banquet manager. When I started working there in 1958, the hotel was reaching her pinnacle. Elsa Maxwell, who lived at the Waldorf, was a grand lady and she knew how to throw a party. I remember we had a Friday night in April when the Grand Ballroom was empty and my boss said “Hughie, get something in here.” I remember Elsa said “Why go o...
Building an Icon, A Waldorf Story by Kevin Ryan

My father, Thomas W. Ryan, was the Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Thompson-Starrett Company, the construction firm that built the Waldorf. They literally built the skyline of New York! They basically invented what it took to actually build a skyscraper. It was an undertaking in and of itself to actually build this hotel because they said that it was built on a scale bigger ...

Wheel of Life Mosaic in the Waldorf Astoria

The "Wheel of Life" mosaic at the center of the floor in our Park Avenue Lobby was designed by French artist Louis Rigal. Rigal’s design iconographically depicts the drama of human existence from birth, to old age, and death. The first group shows the happiness of a mother, father, and relatives as a newly-born baby awakens. The second group represents youth and friendship. The third depicts th...

They destroyed it and auctioned off its historical furnishings for pennies. All in the name of modernization. What is considered modern will always change now it will be stuck in the 2020’s instead of being in its opulent 1930s grandeur. It’s the equivalent of painting over a Picasso because it’s “old” what are we doing?

A national treasure?? She paid strange men to kidnap her daughter and take her to the middle of nowhere where she was beaten and sexually assaulted. "Not knowing" is no excuse. You don't hand your kids over to strangers when they start acting up in a way you don't like. Only a psychopath would ship their child off to strangers.
