Treating Depression Anxiety & Bipolar Disorder with Natural Remedies
Can you please make a video about Gaba and L glutamine supplements?
What type of diet do you recommend ? I’ve been eating high meat , sat and dairy with some Fruits and minimal carbs - am quite depressed and with a lot of anxiety. Put back on li carbonate plus start of lamotrigine now and it is sedating me but extreme fatigue , blurry vision with inability to cope with much stimuli - sensory overload, and my hormones are all bottom low. Looking to get treated for hormonal imbalance soon to help that side of things hopefully Love to hear from you in anyway Truly want to defeat recurring episodes and live well manage and get me back up again

Gosh, thanks.
Glad you’re here!!! Would be honored to be in your presence ❤❤❤
Thank you so much for all this information. I appreciate the time and hard-work you have put into helping all of us.
Glad you liked it. In addition to 35 years in practice I spent 8 months doing the reading for that video and weeks written and re filming the video. I’m happy with the content but the sound got corrupted when I made the final edits and I couldn’t repair it, so I’m going to have to re-film it. The next version will better so it’s not a total loss.
Amazing video! Thank you for explaining the treatments for bipolar and mentioning potential treatments for Post-antidepressant discontinuation syndrome - very little research has been done on these conditions and it is great to see someone as brilliant as you shedding light on these horrific and poorly treated conditions. You are helping a lot of people. 🙏
Have you looked into micronutrients that cross the blood brain barrier?
If you mean micronutrients like zinc and lithium then yes, very much so. Also polyphenols from diet are helpful because they reduce inflammation. Is that what you mean, or are you referring to something else?
Thank you for such a great talk ❤
You are so welcome! I’m making a new video on lithium orotate dosage compared to lithium carbonate.

What remedies or supplements are used to increase GABA and serotonin and decrease glutamate..? Thank you for the wonderful information you share.. you are helping many people
I just have a brief question. So i started taking lithium orotate 3 months ago (5mg) and it helped stabalizing my mood really well, especially when i started taking magnesium and nac in addition i benefitted from that a lot. So today i started taking 10mg lithium orotate with magnesium and nac, my mood got even better and i felt not as depressed anymore. However that same day i have a hard time focusing and feel very tired. I mean its only the first day that i take it but is that normal? Btw i took the 10mg lithium orotate in the morning which might also not have been good? Does the body need time to adjust from 5 too 10mg ?
Thank you so much for sharing your story, it’s so inspiring. i have been recently diagnosed with adhd and I started to doubt if the symptoms i thought were related to bipolar where not indeed adhd traits. I’m also in the middle of trying the right supplement mix for myself. I’ll check out more of your videos. Take care!
I wish I could take lithium orotate, but I don’t think it’s strong enough for me. I take lithium carbonate 900mg. Bipolar 1.
Many people need a strong treatment effect than low doses lithium orotate can provide. I’m next video is about this subject: what’s the equivalent treatment dose of lithium orotate to lithium carbonate. If you want to catch that subscribe and click the notifications bell. Basically there isn’t an equivalent dose, it’s not as strong. To achieve an effective treatment lithium orotate has to be combined with multiple other supplements and treatments including darkness therapy. When all these treatments are added together they can produce a powerful effect. Lithium orotate is not enough on its own for my bipolar, but when combined with a large stack of supplements and other things including a healthy diet sleeping techniques I’m able to put my bipolar completely into permanent remission. If you would like me too develop a treatment program for your type of bipolar you can book an appointment on Calendly.com/petersmithuk
What about kidney function, lithium affects kidney function
High doses of lithium can negatively affect kidney function. But there’s a study showing low doses of lithium are actually beneficial to the kidneys, and slow down age related kidney decline. I’m explaining this in a new video in a few weeks. I wouldn’t take lithium orotate if it was doing to damage my kidneys.
Very smart, super intelligent insight into bipolar and lithium treatment
Thanks, I’ve just made another video on lithium and that’s the first of several new videos I’m making on lithium.
Your sound could be better.
Ok thanks Do you mean on this video? I thought the sound had come out ok on this one. I made a video about the 15 Causes of Bipolar in which the sound got corrupted and it’s terrible so I’m gonna have to remake that video. It takes me days of filming and editing for these videos so it’s a big deal to have to remake one, especially an hour long one. Please let me know which video has the poor sound, I want to get that right
Would lithium orotate be safe to combine with an ssri?
Yes, it is. Good luck with your recovery.

Question, what diet do you follow and why?
Many of my patients do perfectly well on a healthy Paleolithic diet which includes a palm size of animal protein, a tennis ball of (healthy) carbohydrate and 50% of the plate being coloured plant foods for polyphenols. This is also an enjoyable and easy diet to follow. The other 2 therapeutic diets with great potential for bipolar disorder and other mental health problems of a ketogenic diet and the plant; interestingly they are extremely different. A diet very high in polyphenols to reduce inflammation and grow and develop the gut microbiome is a goal we should all achieve from our diet. Another goal is to minimise inflammation because inflammation is a driving force behind the big 4 mental health problems (bipolar, schizophrenia, OCD and chronic depression). In bipolar specifically inflammation drives up glutamate in the brain. The best diet by far to achieve the above 2 goals is a plant-based diet which is what I now do. The famous alternative diet for bipolar, schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder is the ketogenic diet. People often exaggerate how much evidence that is supporting the ketogenic diet for the treatment of mental health problems. There is some evidence although a lot of it involves studies that were only run for a short time and included a few people; nevertheless the results do look promising. But there is no right one size fits all diet. Last week I spoke to someone that was bipolar symptom-free when there were only ketogenic diet but they just cannot maintain it; and a poorly maintained ketogenic diet is quite harmful to the body. When you are in a state of ketosis the so much that inside the muscle and liver cells that it changes the insulin receptor sites and we are technically insulin resistant. A question which needs to be answered is does this actually matter as long as you never eating carbohydrates? But for someone that regularly breaks their ketogenic state starts eating carbohydrates they are now doing this in a state of insulin resistance and this is harmful to the body. So the first rule of the ketogenic diet is never break it, absolutely no cheap dates well maybe once a year. I it's critical have to have your levels tested to make sure that you are actually genuinely in a state of ketosis. So if a person likes a ketogenic diet and they can maintain it, permanently maintain it, then it's worth trying. To be an effective therapy for an individual diet has to make scientific sense but also be something that the person can and will actually do long-term. A big unanswered question, though there is research going on, is how therapeutic the ketogenic diet is for cases of bipolar type II as opposed to cases of bipolar type I. It may turn out that it is mainly therapeutic for bipolar type I, I believe this is being researched currently in Edinburgh University. Despite being the potentially great treatment for some conditions the ketogenic diet is not all it is claimed to be. All over TH-cam people are saying that the ketogenic diet reduces inflammation, but it does not negatively impact cholesterol and triglycerides, and they ignore the insulin resistance risk. People claim the ketogenic diet is wonderful for everything from epilepsy to heart attacks, and this is ridiculous it's not snake oil. The ketogenic diet has side effects, you should think of it like you think about most medical treatments, there are benefits and there are unwanted side effects. Another example of this is the super low fat diet developed by Dr Esselstyn that appears to reverse heart disease may be great for that job would be terrible for my depression; I just couldn't do that diet. It may be an uncomfortable truth to deal with but animal protein and saturated fat raise inflammation levels and therefore the ketogenic diet will maintain higher levels of inflammation compared to a plant-based diet. But a plant-based diet doesn't give you the benefits of the ketogenic state which appears to be powerful medicine at least to some individuals. I've been studying diet and nutrition for over 40 years, eventually you realise that there is no one size fits all, a diet that can be great for one thing may cause problems somewhere else, there can be disadvantages in every diet, you have to weigh up the advantages versus the disadvantages, and none of this even matters if the person won't do the diet. In my practice I'll prescribe a plant-based protein diet when I want to achieve the lowest possible level of inflammation and all the maximum amount of weight loss. If somebody is keen on trying the ketogenic diet for bipolar, schizoaffective and schizophrenia I'll recommend they try it, with the proviso that they do 100% right. If neither of those 2 scenarios applies a healthy Paleolithic diet may be the way to go. But only in exceptionally rare cases would I endorse the carnival diet; these cases are so rare that I've never seen one. It would have to be a case involving extreme leaky gut, with high levels of bacterial translocation from the gut into the bloodstream activating the immune system, and also autoimmunity. The famous (on social media) example of this scenario is Jordan Peterson's daughter, she had such severe autoimmunity that she had to have a double hip replacement in her teens, this is a very rare and unusual medical situation. Unfortunately she has made 2 mistakes that many people make. The first mistake is to think that the diet that works for you will work universally for other people and other conditions, and the 2nd mistake is to think that a diet does not have any negative health consequences. It's alarming to me that because of the fame of her father there are now many thousands of people across the world following a carnival diet when it may actually be harming them in the long run. People with severe leaky gut bacterial translocation may initially feel great improvement in all their symptoms when they go on the carnival diet simply because there is fibrous resident left in the intestines to ferment bacteria. But in the long run the lack of healthy gut microbiome will make the situation worse. We also know that we can exert powerful therapeutic effects over the health of our brain and our mental health by growing and developing a healthy gut microbiome. The carnival diet is a last resort for people that are seriously ill within intestinal membranes and autoimmunity. I want to make a video about all of this, many people have told me not to because I will be bombarded with anger and hostility from the keto and carnivore diet community, probably even call a vegan conspiracy theorist. I'm just a practitioner trying to right diet to achieve therapeutic goals in myself and my patients, for me diets just therapeutic tools not belief systems and tribal camps. … A bit of a long answer but…
I worry because BD1 and BD2 can manifest in vastly different ways. I feel like someone with BD2 may have an easier time treating naturally. I have been living with BD1 completely off of any lithium or anti psychotics. I experience more frequent mania episodes than depression ones and while I cycle rapidly, I have had pure mania lasting weeks. My symptoms have been manageable (albeit layered in dysfunction). I just want something to take the edge off my mania. I dont need to be "neurotypical" I just want to feel more stable. I dont want to be emotionally castrated by meds. But idk if this would work for BD1.
I tried to find the link but I couldn't find it.
Which link are you referring to?
Ice bath 😊 that’s what I use
Ice baths release BDNF and heat-shock proteins so they up-regulate neuroplasticity and pain tolerance. Although theses effects are great they are not enough for a complete treatment of a serious mental disorder, at least not for most people. There’s so many things to fix in mental illnesses. It’s great it works for you though.
Are there any probiotics that you would recommend for anxiety?
Yes, L-Reuteri and L-Rhamnosus But don’t forget they need to have something to eat to multiply and that is a high fibre diet. I’m preparing a video on treatment options and a plan to combat anxiety. It’s not a fast process but I think we now have much more effective treatments for anxiety than the drugs or just supplements.

I bought weyland brand lithium Orotate 20mg, and I take 1 every other day. Does it matter if I take lithium if I have only mild depression/Anxiety? Any thoughts?
Supplementing low-dose lithium from lithium or rotate is a great idea for people with mild depression and anxiety. On its own it’s not strong enough to combat a serious mental illness but it’s perfect for mild cases. You could experiment with taking it every day or alternate days as you are. Another fantastic treatment for mild depression and anxiety is meditation brain training. I have just started teaching a meditation technique specifically for depression and anxiety in online classes at the weekend. Studies have shown a three month course of meditation can reduce anxiety and depression by about a third; and the great thing is that the results last for years even after you discontinue the practice, so you do not have to commit to doing it every day for the rest of your life to receive the benefits. If you would like to receive some more information on these classes, I could send you that via email, Alternatively if you wanted to go ahead and simply try the first class you can book using the link below. Thanks for all the information ❤ Can I take glutathione for oxidative stress reduction or it induces mania?
Raising and maintaining glutathione levels is a great thing to do to protect the brain. Glutathione supplements are not very efficient at doing this. What I use is NAC cysteine, it’s more cost effective. NAC also protects mitochondria and at lower doses helps control glutamate. At higher doses (above 600 x 2) it can drive up dopamine which would need to be counterbalanced. You have to miss out 1 day a week otherwise after several months you just develop tolerance to it.
@ thank you so much. You’re amazing 🙏🙏
@ how about taking gaba supplements for reducing glutamate? Does it help?
You’re welcome. Right now I’m preparing my next video. It’s going to be an update on lithium orotate and I’m going to read out and answer the comments from my other videos on lithium orotate. If you have a question about lithium orotate post it and i may get included.
GABA doesn’t reduce glutamate, it could inhibit excessive firing but you would still have elevated glutamate. Taking GABA is also not efficient, to raise GABA I use theanine, taurine ashwagansha that type of thing.
I find the only way that helps me is cold water therapy and win hof approach help
I take a couple of lithium orotate with a couple of magnesium to help me sleep

Doc has me on it for years for depression, don't notice much???
The new understanding about what causes chronic depression is that this chronic inflammation in the brain. It's been observed that in the people with treatment resistant depression there is the highest levels of inflammation and lowest levels of BDNF/neuroplasticity. My recommendation would be to concentrate on eliminating everything you can as a trigger from inflammation; this includes infections, gut health, diet, stress responses, physical activity and more. At the same time or shortly afterwards you would take a stack of supplements and other techniques to boost neuroplasticity. Although my latest video was focused on mania there is a large section in that video on how to eliminate inflammation, this is because inflammation triggers mania in a bipolar brain and depression in a depressed brain. So the information in that video could also be useful in your case. Here's the link to that video, th-cam.com/video/aP7oBpSDYIs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xGjE99SDGpPMMTx9 see the middle section with the flowchart on how to eliminate inflammation. Good luck with your treatment.
