About Me:
As a young child, Jonah Krochmalnek, the visionary founder of Living Earth Farm, experienced the sheer delight of a ripe homegrown tomato from his dad's garden. It was a taste of pure magic, a simple pleasure he wanted to make accessible to all.
After leaving the corporate world, Jonah volunteered at a local farm, igniting his passion for farming. In 2013, he took a leap of faith and launched a microgreens business right out of his parents' modest 150 sqft spare room. Little did he know that this humble beginning would grow into the 5000 sqft facility known today as Living Earth Farm - one of Canada's premier organic microgreen growers.
Driven by the purpose of feeding people the absolute most nutritious greens, Jonah's journey is a testament to the transformative power of growing food. Through personalized consultations and impactful coaching, Jonah is on a mission to share his wealth of knowledge, helping vertical farms across the globe thrive and making delicious, simple food accessible to communities everywhere. Join us in making the impactful positive changes to our food system with microgreens!

    what equipment would you look to implement in a freeze dried and capsule production? currently have some racks of fresh microgreens i make for myself and would love to turn them into pill form so we dont waste anything

    • @microgreensconsulting

      A commercial freeze drier and you can get manual or automatic capsule filling machines (depending on what scale you are looking at)

    If you plant a 14 day growth cycle crop weekly , you get a crop a week , given you need more rack space but pea shoots take 2 weeks

    • @microgreensconsulting
      @microgreensconsulting 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The amount fo time under lights is most important. Pea shoots are 7 days under lights so 5 crops per year vs cilantro or basil which is 10-12 days under ligjhts meaning 26 crops per year

    • @SteveJones-gz4vd
      @SteveJones-gz4vd 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@microgreensconsulting No not if you plan your planting you will get a crop a week on rotation

    Interesting! Mine took a long time to geminate and some didn't. What did geminate is taking forever to get any decent size on it. Does it still need a grow light? Can it be sown outdoors in the winter?

    • @microgreensconsulting
      @microgreensconsulting 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Colder than 60F won't be beneficial so growing outside in most climates in the winter won't be feasible. And yes grow light for sure is needed for a quality sorrel microgreen

    How do you price out flowers. I am going edibles flowers now and I have one chef that buys them . I want to sell more .

    • @microgreensconsulting
      @microgreensconsulting 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Flowers are usually priced by count not weight. Sometimes farms use volume but count is the most common way to price them out.

    • @microgreensconsulting
      @microgreensconsulting 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, a lot of farms succumb to burnout. That's a big reason I do consulting for farms. To help them automate and create scalable systems to prevent burnout. It's unfortunately quite common for microgreens farms to shut down after a few years.

  • @nickp5356
    @nickp5356 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

    How do you deal with and compete with "local" large companies like 80 acres that want to snuff out local small competition by selling more per container for less?

    • @microgreensconsulting
      @microgreensconsulting 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You generally sell to different customer types.As a small grower you likely won't sell to whole foods, but rather smaller mom and pop stores and restaurants. Large farms don't target these customers as they aren't big enough customers for them to be worth the time and effort.

    • @nickp5356

      @microgreensconsulting makes sense. Thank you Jonah for the feedback, I appreciate it. I will try not to worry so much about this, and focus more on perfecting my growing routine.

    Hey Jonah, I have two questions about the tray planting setup here. I see the trays being filled with fluffy soil, and they come out with a smooth even seedbed. What mechanism gets the soil so flat for seeding, a press? Also, your seeder needs to be rolled over the trays, right? How is the seeding triggered with the right density with the trays just pushed through? Thanks for this video!

    • @microgreensconsulting
      @microgreensconsulting หลายเดือนก่อน

      A good soil mixing machine will automatically flatten the soil. They aren't cheap but well worth the investment. For the seeder, this farm attached the drive wheel to the conveyer so as the conveyer spins so does the wheel. Changing the wheel size would change the seeding rate just like rolling it on a table!
