North East Link project - Bulleen Concrete Plant
Now in full-swing, the plant is supplying concrete to the North East Link (NEL) project in Melbourne, Victoria. The NEL project is a mega infrastructure project, including the construction of 6.5km long tunnels to fix the missing link in Melbourne’s freeway network. Earlier this year, aerial footage captured an overview of the plant and a dramatic storm that swept over the plant.

This wasn't comparing trailer flooring; it was comparing driver technique. The one on the left opened the tailgate before beginning to dump. The one on the right opened the tailgate beyond halfway into the dump. I think they were hoping for the one on the right to begin to sway in the wind, which can occur when all the weight is still in the nose of the trailer, to demonstrate the hazards of operating in that manner. If these trucks were on a slight sideways grade angle, the one on the right would have tipped over. Not a very good safety video because it actually showed no hazard. 🤣 This comment was made by me, over 40yrs of experience operating a dump truck in the U.S.

0:17 I'm still not convinced that is just a bitumen refinery. So big it has two office blocks one on the far left-hand side and one next to the sidings. Or was the one next to the sidings a lab complex? This was definitely the forerunner of AOR Kurnell which opened in 1953 when this sort of activity started to move away from Sydney Harbour. Sure its construction was a triumph for the petrochemical industry during the post-war boom years from 1947-1983. It was remodeled into a bitumen and LPG-only facility in 1976 by Total Australia Limited. Three green tanks were added in the middle and were not demolished until early 1993 and a gas ball was constructed in the far left-hand corner where the office block is. The flare stack was removed at this time. An iconic landmark it was. The bitumen is stored in that dark block of tanks on the far right-hand side of the photo. That large tank that used to have the Total logo on it at the front was only demolished at the end of 1991 along with the small row of tanks behind it. The plasterboard factory was a timely addition during the worst of the early 1990s recession that now occupies most of the site.

1:15 I thought it was 1948 with the opening of the Chifley refinery? Big refinery for just making bitumen and LPG? Even when half of it was closed with the flare stack dismantled and sold to Total in 1976 those fuel bunkers were huge. Have a go at the size of Tank 115! Or that main bunker with the Total logo on the north side of Military Road, and the smaller white tanks around it with the pipeline down to its own crude oil wharf across the road from APM. Truth be known it was just like AOR Kurnell operating as a petroleum distributor to what seemed like smaller household petrol brands like Caltex and Ampol. Ampol bought Total Chifley and closed it down in September 1984 with the last wagons leaving in October 1984 I suspect. They even had Shell NTBF wagons coming to be refilled there occasionally or was that just a mix-up? Those SPEED-E-GAS sausage rail tankers went there right to the end.

“Boral concrete is S%^T. Poured at my place, it cracked as it was being poured and continued cracking even after being re-screed. 23 cracks in all, measuring between 800mm up to 1500mm in length. The concrete labourers had to add more water to stop it cracking. Usually adding more water causes concrete to crack. Emailed Boral including their CEO Zlatko Todorcevski - No reply. Emailed them again - My emails now blocked and still no reply. After speaking to a former concreter with 27 years’ experience in the job, the reason it cracked; DOLOMITE IS USED INSTEAD OF SAND AS DOLOMITE IS CHEAPER = MORE MONEY IN THEIR POCKET. Boral also skimped on the colouring additive, reliant on the concrete labour company sealing my paths. Hence BORAL ALSO RIPPED OFF THE CONCRETING LABOUR COMPANY as they had been charged for full colour additive within in the concrete. The look on the concreting company owner's face when he attended site and discovered that he had also been ripped off by Boral. Which begs the question; DID BORAL SUPPLY THE CONCRETE (MIXED WITH DOLOMITE) THAT WAS USED IN THE SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA HIGH-RISE BUILDINGS THAT HAVE SINCE CRACKED AND ARE NOW UNINHABITABLE ?? Look on Boral's website and see how many unhappy, dissatisfied Boral customers there are, left out of pocket and left in the dark. Boral had my money once. NEVER, EVER, EVER AGAIN WILL I USE BORAL.”

Not sure if you're serious or joking but for those who don't know, some tipper trailers are equipped with a pneumatic vibrator. They're used for making the floor of the tipper body vibrate to hopefully shake the load loose and reduce the friction holding the load from sliding down. When the truck floor is exposed they make an extremely load racket. Workplace health and safety rules prohibit fooling around and practical jokes these days. When I was doing this kind of work over twenty years ago safety was not as strict in most places as it is today. Apart from their intended use, it was also great fun sometimes to hit the air valve briefly once or twice when an unexpecting pedestrian is walking past that part of the truck. It's not something the driver will do too often or it wouldn't be as much of a surprise. It was a trick reserved for somebody who really deserved it, like somebody who has done some kind of practical joke on the driver and needs to be paid back. It's a terrible trick from the victim's point of view though and quite dangerous, it could give somebody a heart attack. Probably the only time I ever played that trick on anybody was one day in a gravel pit when I was in a lineup for the loader. My truck was just at the front of the lineup when smoko time came and the loader operator shut down for smoko, (morning coffee break if you;'re not Australian). The other thing we used to do which would probably not be allowed now was to sit under the shade of the trucks to have smoko. No other facilities were provided back in those days. Somebody particularly deserving came and settled under my truck while I was still in the cab making my coffee. He was a guy with a big bushy mono-brow like Yosemite Sam. You should have seen his eyes open wide and his eyebrows nearly pop off his forehead when I hit the vibrator! I still chuckle about that when I remember it to this day!
