HELLO
Hello
I need to find a 6 lugger. That sounds great!!
It’s crazy how these 100+ year old snares sound. I’m always amazed at the sound of the 6-lug snares.
tenes que cerrar el estadio
I have to close the stadium…?
What head?
I think this was a Remo Emperor. I don’t recall ever using anything else on this snare.
You can actually play these?
Just kidding... Nice job!
@@roblake602Thank you!
hey Pat do you have a Brady for sale? And can you tell me the top and bottom head tunings on your DW? fantastic...
No Brady snares for sale here. The dw’s I just tuned by ear. I honestly had a hard time getting the toms sounding good on the dw kit. I used clear Emperors over clear Ambassadors though with some muffling.
That snare is a MONSTER!
I have the same drum but with 10 lugs and the sound it's insane
@@Uzziel_lay_drums Those are incredible. I've wanted one for a long, long time!
I love how the whole kit sounds, that snare is a killer for the way you play here
Thank you! I’m really enjoying this snare. It definitely has some beef behind it. I cranked it yesterday just a little and I was surprised at how high this 6.5 can go with only 6 lugs. It really pops!
Good playing sir……you got a good feel goin on……
Thanks! I usually cringe hearing myself play. Ha!
I just bought a 13,16,24 wfl kit. Best heads to run on these shells? Tx
Check out the video description. It has all the heads listed for each drum. 👍 All my vintage kits use this combination and it sounds great.

What a beautiful kit all around!! Love the shirt too!!
Go Cards!
@@PatrickWitherow You know it!!
Great kid, Patrick!!! 👌👌
Thank you Hugo!
So unsure if to purchase an older kit like this or Legacy Mahogany - Sure sounds good !
I’ve never played a Legacy Mahogany or Maple, but I’ve heard great things about their sound. I just love the ’original’ old shells that are 50+ years old. I also like to see the craftsmanship that went into these drums. Some of my older WFL snares are built like tanks! If you decide on a vintage kit, be sure that the bearing edges are smooth/even and the drum is in round. Some of the kits out there may not have had the best caretakers…Both my vintage kits and all my vintage snares had zero issues when I got them, but it’s good to be aware of things like that and to ask for photos before you buy.
i'll buy it please :)
Not sure if I could ever let this one go!
Great snare sound !! What mics are you using?
A cellphone. The only 'real' mic I own is an AKG D112 and that is mounted inside my dw bass drum. I always end up buying drums and not recording gear!
Nice sound! What mics are you using?
Just my cellphone Not much mic magic happening here. Maybe one day I’ll invest in some real mics and stop buying drums :)
@@PatrickWitherow , no!! That's the why you have developed that excelent ear to tune your drums. You prefer to find the sound instead of make it up
@@hugohdzbalderas6357 Thank you! I’m always afraid my drums sound bad. This comment gives me confidence in my tuning (or me trying to tune!)
On sale?
Not for sale.
Are you sling only your cellphone mic?
That's it. Maybe one day I'll get some real mics and equipment...this is working just fine for me though.
Hey man! Do you put anything in your bass drum for muffling?
In this video, I had a small microfiber cloth inside the bass drum pressed lightly against the reso head. The batter head was probably an Ebony PS3. I now use the same heads, but with a felt strip on the reso head and that's it. Nothing else inside the kick.
Great song choice. Plus the same snare is awesome!
It's the classic Abbruzzese sound!
Nice! What do you record on?
only I can hear is hihat
Always posting the bet content!
Thank you! I just enjoy playing :)
You should make a video showing your process!! Still haven't found a walkthrough video to follow along for mine
So gorgeous. Just warm water and dawn, eh? I'll have to give it a shot
Water and dawn to start with. Then a coat of Novus2 and buff. Then Maguir's PlastX and buff. Then Turtle Wax Hardshell Finish and buff. Done!
What heads do you have on the toms and kick? I just picked up a 69 myself in blue sparkle and same sizes as yours.
Coated Ambassdors on tops and bottoms of toms. Right now I'm using a coated PS3 on kick batter. Have a great day!
That sounds REEEAAALLY good
Thank you!
Rad beat, too✔️
Kick sounds great to me. Love the color, too!
The kick was 12" from the factory?
Yes. Ludwig made a 'New Yorker' back in the 50's/60's which included a 12x22 or 12x20 bass drum. Mine is from '63.

Heads?
Toms = Coated Ambassadors for both batter and reso Kick Batter = Coated Emperor or Coated Ambassador (I swapped those heads on this kick drum a few times as well as an Ebony PS3 and a Coated PS3 - of all those I prefer the Ebony PS3) Kick Reso = Remo Smooth White without a port Snare = Coated Emperor

Great classic sound
I’d love to get a kit like this. Do you recommend it?
This is my second '60s Ludwig kit...so I do recommend them. If you enjoy the 3-ply sound and the 60s vibe, then I say go for it. Just remember these are 50+ year old kits and could have imperfections or may need some elbow grease to clean up. My '63 kit was in much better shape than my '68 kit when I got it. Each one is different so ask questions and for pictures before you buy.
@@PatrickWitherow thanks!
How do you like this kick vs. a 14x22?
It doesn't lack any volume compared to a 14x22. It plays faster and has very nice punch and low end. I actually play this one more than my 14x22 Ludwig.
Hey man! I’m looking to get a Brady 7X12. What’s your honest thoughts on them? Especially the 12” diameter
Hey! They can do just about anything. They naturally want to be tuned up, but I like mine tuned around medium to get more punch and some low-end from them...and the depth allows that. It could definitely be a main snare, unless you play real slow ballads, etc. all the time. It sort of has a hollow/chamber effect to it at times which I love. When I play this drum I think Steve Jordan (he plays one at times) or Cult of Personality...it has that same vibe. Its loud with crack and has great tone. I had two, but sold one recently because they both sounded somewhat similar even though they were different wood species. Hope this helps!
@@PatrickWitherow absolutely man! Thank you. I think I’m going to grab one myself. I’m worried about the side stick that I may or may not get out of the drum due to the size, but I agree with everything you say about the drum.
@@StuartJrBarrett The side stick is pretty good. If you end up getting one you'll really enjoy it. Have a great evening!
Hey man what does the kick feel like in comparison to 14” deep ones? Thinking about cutting one of mine down to be a 12” depth
I tend to use this kit more so than my other Ludwig kit that has a 14x22 - mainly because of the way the kick drum responds. The 12x22 has a faster response (to me) and the sound/tone from behind the kit is more prominent. It has more punch from in front of the kit and has the same amount of volume as the 14. I was a little skeptical at first as to how it would sound, but I'm very impressed with what a 12" depth can do. If I could find another Ludwig New Yorker 12x22 I'd get it if I could!
Thanks for posting this. I just picked up a blue sparkle New Yorker based on the tone of yours and a few others videos. Arrive next week ~ stoked!
I think I saw those listed for sale online (if its the same kit)...looked great! You will love the 12x22. I use a coated PS3 batter with smooth white reso not ported...or a coated Ambassador reso with very small port for a mic. Reso head has felt strip and batter has a microfiber cloth rolled up and placed between foot pedal and batter head to dampen it just a little. On my 14x22 I use an Ebony PS3 with the same reso combination. They both sound like a cannon!
@@PatrickWitherow probably the same kit you saw...toms sounded great out of the box...kick needs a bit of work...I ordered a ps3 coated for the batter and really want to experiment with felt strips as opposed to pillows and/or reso hole...I have an sm91 with a jelly shu mount, so hoping the can find a crafty way for the cable to exit without extra holes
@@craigmcmillan5733 Awesome. Let me know if you post it on TH-cam. Is your kick painted white or clear on the inside? Mine is clear maple.
@@PatrickWitherow inside is white
@@craigmcmillan5733 let me know how you like your kit and the sizes.... I’m thinking about getting one too.
Great sound! What sizes are these?
Thank you! 12x22, 9x13, 16x16.
Where's the tip jar?
Ha! Thank you for the kind comment :)
Go into Why Go sounds like to me
This would be a great set for covering the Beatles. I wanna see you play the intro to some STP on that collecters DW kit that's a nice kit.
Sounds good to me. These 60's Ludwigs though...it's a close one between these two.
Get the mics set up and start covering some zeppelin or STP.
I would if I had mics...and an audio interface. Eric Kretz is one awesome pocket drummer. Love his work. The mics in the picture were provided by a sound team when I played last weekend.
@@PatrickWitherow Heck ya man Eric is an amazing pocket drummer love his style and how heavy his tone is.
@@gingerbaker1785 Maybe an Interstate Love Song snippet. That's a great song.
@@PatrickWitherow Ya it is. You should do meatplow that one is really fun to play.
That sounds fat as fuck nice job
Excellent. What are heads are you using?
Coated Ambassador batters and reso's on toms. Coated Ambassador batter on kick with smooth white reso on kick. Both sides have felt strips only.
Where'd you find the Tom?
It came with the rest of my kit. I got it off Reverb.
@@PatrickWitherow Reason I am asking all these questions is I have a '67 Blue Oyster kit that I am putting together; however, I don't have the Floor tom. Everything else is matched.
Also; the are not shining up the way you have got them and I don't want to use a harsh chemical. Thanks!
@@austinlawther Very nice! It's my favorite finish from that time period. My 13 and 16 are both '67's. My bass drum is a '63. I've seen a good bit for sale on the Facebook Ludwig Collector's group. You may want to check there. Good luck in the search!
@@austinlawther No problem! No harm was done to the wrap when using the items I used. I actually got the idea from a guy who cleaned up his '60's Oyster Black Pearl kit and it looked brand new when he was finished. The Novus2 really does a great job.
Beautiful.. How did you clean up the shells?
Stripped everything off the shell. I put all hardware in a Dawn/water mixture and let sit for about 24 hours. Then after drying really well I polished with Never-Dull. For the shells I first wiped them down (on the outside) with a paper towel dipped in water/Dawn to get any dust or grime off. Then used Novus2, Meguiar's Plastx Clear Plastic Cleaner and finally Turtle Wax Hard Shell car wax on the outside of all shells. If the hardware had any rust spots I used water or diet coke with aluminum foil to remove any rust and let the tension rods soak in wd-40 for about a day or so to remove any dark grime that had built up over the years. This Oyster Blue Pearl kit was in pretty immaculate condition when I got it and took a lot less time to clean compared to my Blue Sparkle kit.
Sounds like a perfect kit to cover fool in the rain by led zeppelin
Me need me want
