Joshua Koestenbaum playing a Natale Carletti cello made in Pievo di Cento, Italy, 1960
Joshua Koestenbaum, Associate Principal Cello in Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, plays a beautiful Natale Carletti cello, made in Pieve di Cento in 1960.
Natale Carletti (b. 1904 d. 1979) was the son, student, and successor to Carlo Carletti in Pievo di Cento, Italy. Natale Carletti took over his father’s workshop in 1941. He was a cellist himself and produced approximately 200 cellos, with his most impressive instruments being crafted from 1945-68. This cello has a bold sound that jumps out of the instrument with an instant response. The sound is full and powerful in the low register, transitioning to a focused, clear sound in the upper register. A unique 2-piece back cut on the slab clothed in a beautiful non-antiqued reddish-orange varnish gives the cello a striking look to pair with the powerful sound. This cello would complement an exceptional player looking to play at the highest level. It has been certified by Bein & Fushi.

Make sure to wind the string toward the wall of the peg box. It is important the string be wound neatly and uniformly without overlap. This will help prevent breakage. www.givensviolins.com
What is peg dope and how do I properly apply it to my pegs?
มุมมอง 2.9K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Peg dope is a compound which, when applied to the peg, helps it turn more uniformly at gives it a more secure hold. Peg dope should be applied where the peg touches the walls of the peg box. Restorer Marie Stier shows us how the job is done. www.givensviolins.com

Bender endpins

The Bender endpin is designed to optimize sound quality and resonance of the cello. The plug screws into the end block as opposed to being held by tension. This, in addition to the 360-degree collet-style grip of the rod, allows for a more consistent resonance to the overall sound of the instrument. Choice of rod materials includes carbon fiber, titanium, aluminum, and steel. Each has a notable...

As far as getting the feet to match the belly, why would one not use sand paper, say 220, abrasive side up, of course and just stroke the abrasive with the feet, stroking parallel with the neck ??

Name stamp faces the neck and that is also the side that gets planed down but not as far as the name stamp, rather just above the name stamp.

Thanks for your video. What would be nice is if someone explained WHY a luthier carves this part of the bridge for this specific violin but carves the bridge differently for a different violin. In other words, why shape the heart and kidneys so much for one violin but differently for another violin? What sealant is good for sealing the bridge?

Wipe the front and back very sparingly with teak oil, but not the ends. The grain will absorb too much.

Thanks for your exposé! Love the Schlosser! I have my doubts about the Urquhart violin: is it a composite? Have you done a dendrochronological exam? It looks like an ‘adjusted’ Cuijpers violin, or something like that…🤔
