Packrafting Near Miss on the Hoh River
มุมมอง 2253 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Hoh River carries glacial-blue water through a peaceful valley of temperate rainforest. Well, peaceful except for the amount of logs in the channel. Always wear a PFD when packrafting and make sure you have the skillset and mindset to avoid upcoming hazards. July 11th, 2024

Queets Rainforest Packrafting
มุมมอง 563 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Queets is a parallel watershed to the popular Hoh but receives a tiny fraction of the visitation. This means the trail is only nice for the first 6 miles and even within that presents some challenges. The first few miles of paddling featured nice class II Boulder gardens, but sadly on this day my GoPro had a layer sunscreen in the lens. July 10th, 2024 at 1200cfs

Nice camper. 👍1
So dang pretty!
Stunning visuals! The landscapes are so beautifully shot. Can’t wait to see more! 👍3
Dang, nice crew! That looks like a rad stretch.
Wow looks so pretty! Was the queets more manageable than the hoh strainer and logjam wise? Might be willing to switch up some plans
What section is this?? Have a trip planned for literally a few days. Was always expecting to portage some log jams. We were planning to launch from Lewis Meadow Campgrounds
@@ethanmacnamara4069 This is just above Cougar Creek. Have a good trip!
That log right at the beginning would have made a perfect setup for a paddle toss......
How far up from the n fork confluence did you put in??
@@ryan_halverson 2.2 river miles. It is in the obvious spot where there is a break in the gorge and trail crossing. Basically right at the top of the limestone gorge
👏. This is how you do an Escalante packraft trip
Awesome!!
cool trip! looks low, what was the flow? any punctures?
Impossible to give a correct answer with this one as there is no gauge. But from my extensive experience with paddling around 100cfs and below, I would say this was below. I took damage to my floor which turned my Refuge into a self-bailer. Fixed it home. No other noticeable leaks in our group
Do you take the lower or upper ledge on the crack in the wall exit? I have taken the upper ledge the two times I've done it, but im wondering if the lower is less sketchy feeling.
Beautiful video. Thanks for sharing. 👍2
Beautiful edit. That ledge system is wild.
Isn't it!?!
Beautiful!!!
Sickkkk i did this last month from second camp! put on at 6:30 and got off at 3.. Glad to see someone else had the idea!
Awesome!
Ha, I've flipped trying to eddy out at the same place 0:10. No idea why it got me.
Haha, looking back on this video it's pretty clear why it got me. I think I'd be quite a bit more dialed there now. Fun to see progression.
CFS?
1400, I usually put it in the description
@@landonsawaya yeah my bad, guess I missed that
Fantastic video. Thank you for sharing. 👍11
Rockhoppers! 😆👍

Dang I'm tired just watching this. Amazing effort, well done.
Awesome work! How many miles did you paddle in one day??

🎉🙌👏👏👏
I need to run this….next year
That looks like so much fun! Nice work!!
Wow, this was so cool!
Niiiiiice!
Awesome, nice boat!
Clean shots, are those some drone shots mixed in there?
Footbridges 👍 but thanks!
Nice man this looks like so much fun wtf?!????
👍👏
It is possible that the zipper got caught on a branch?
I really don't think the top of my stern could've touched any stick, but I definitely considered it
Is this common? Been debating whether to get one with a cargo zipper or not.
It is not common. It is probably caused by some tiny obstruction in the zipper chain compromising it's integrity, although mine definitely wasn't leaking air prior to this
Nice boat😎
Whoa! That was pretty crazy. Whats the long term prognosis for the boat?
It's totally fine, I unzipped and rezipped it a few times and paddled 10 more miles
Had this happen to me on Indian Gardens this year, but luckily it was right as I got in my boat at the put-in. Was your zipper exhibiting symptoms of a problem? Or did this just happen randomly despite regular care and maintenance?
It happened very unexpectedly, there were no symptoms like leaking which might indicate an imperfection in the linkage of the chain. I assume it's because I had the boat at very high pressure and the pressure increased further upon collision with the log
Sick
💪💪💪
Me (SE-380X) and Steven (12' canoe) run from Beasley to Gap Creek on April 6. We portaged The Falls. But after portage I (somehow) managed to get into that gnarly channel under the rock. Backwards. Enjoyed the struggle, came through upright, laughed myself out. Found "Off the wall" and "Punk Rock" to be most challenging. No swims or damage. May be we'll go Childs to Horseshoe in couple of weeks... If there will be enough water.
Sounds gnarly! The water is dropping fast
@@landonsawaya That's Arizona way...
Scary shit glad you guys are ok , love AZ boating
Thanks for publishing this! It’s super helpful to see you handle it in real time.
Nice!
Thanks for removing the log. I haven't done that stretch in a while but I've cleared 100+ limbs between Black Canyon and Newton in Cottonwood in the last couple years. It's nice to have a clear channel.
It sure is! Feels like a luxury around here...
That's a sporty looking drop there!
Good fun. I'm finally certain that the class III ledge rapid is more difficult and consequential than that gnarly looking IV after it
Love the bike shuttle. Reminds me of paddling during Covid. What was the water level?
You’ve got some quality goods in your backyard!
