Land Rats on a Bartered Sailboat
South Africa
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 9 พ.ค. 2020
Welcome to Land Rats.
We're Refitting a 34 ft van der Stadt in the middle of Sunny South Africa, It's Dusty it's warm and it's no place to be building a boat, but that's not stopping us.
We're Drinking beers, Making mistakes and Working on this Yacht. We've got lots of work ahead and you can keep an eye on this channel if you want to see how we do it.
The Plan is to become full-time Cruisers, we definitely won't have the nices boat out there but we don't care. We're here to Live and See the world and Rats have a tendency to pretty persistent.

Sailing and exploring the rivers in Bahia Brazil | Land Rats | EP73
We're exploring some Brazilian rivers in cities this episode, after our ocean crossing it's time to do some relaxing, and that is exactly what we do. We spend a few days in Salvador fixing the boat and exploring some more before we set off once again on a 35 mile sail down the coast towards one of the many large rivers in South America. The River entrance is next to a beautiful little local tourist town called Gamboa which is a short but difficult hike from a slightly bigger but touristy town.
This is our first look at small village life in brazil and we love it. The rest of the episode we spend sailing down the Brazilian river visiting churches and small little towns like Gamboa, Galeao, Cairu, Valencia, Canavieras, and Boipeba all with their own unique little charm. ENJOY!

Sailing across the Atlantic Ocean Part 1, Namibia to St Helena Island | Land Rats | EP71
มุมมอง 1.7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
The time is now! We're starting our South Atlantic Crossing Sailing, We spent about a week in Luderitz Namibia and it's time to set off. We're planning on at least 11 to 15 days at Sea before a quick stop at ST Helena Island. มุมมอง 6452 ปีที่แล้ว
We Left South Africa, Our First International Sailing Trip. Although South Africa and Namibia have quite a lot in common and we have visited Namibia before there is something magical in finnally crossing an international border with your boat. Especially if the plan is to cross a lot of international borders! Checking out of South Africa with our sailboat wasn't difficult at all being able to s...
Sailing around the Cape of Storms with no wind, odd boat jobs | Land Rats | EP69
มุมมอง 5162 ปีที่แล้ว
a Place called the Groen Wasmasjien (Green Washingmachine) isn't something I take lightly so when keeping an eye on the wind for this passage i was looking for something under 15 knots and a couple of equally calm days before so as not to leave us with much residue swell. When we found our window and bargaining on a weak 2 knots an hour boat speed we said this has got to be it. We decided to le...
Sailing South Africa, Knysna to Simonstown. Boulders Beach, False Bay Yacht Club | Land Rats | EP68
มุมมอง 1.2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
In this episode, We are out Sailing Again. We're leaving Knysna and Heading for Simonstown in false bay. We Really enjoyed our time in Knysna but all good things come to an end and we need to keep moving. We left the heads at high tide late in the afternoon the wind was light and we had no issues leaving. The Next day two days were mostly easy sailing although we don't have any video from it. W...
Our first time at anchor, Exploring Knysna & the Garden Route | Land Rats | EP67
มุมมอง 4712 ปีที่แล้ว
In this week's episode we talk a little about our time in Knysna as well as give a little information about the place before heading off for our first time at anchor. We've never been at anchor before always tying up against a dock somewhere and rather sailing than testing it out while we we're out and about. No issues dropping the anchor looked like it set quite easily actually. We did drag on...
Sailing from East London to Knysna through the heads | Land rats | EP66
มุมมอง 1.1K2 ปีที่แล้ว
In this episode, we leave East London and the beautiful Buffalo river yacht club with our steel sailing vessel and head over to Knysna 300 NM along the coast. Before we leave East London we have to do some quick sail repairs and obviously do some quick route planning. The Sail was a lot calmer than our previous sail. Our wind maxing out at 20 knots if even that much. Day one was a lovely sunny ...
Sailing the Wild Coast of South Africa with heavy wind and swell | Land Rats | EP65
มุมมอง 1.8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
It's the toughest and most difficult sail we've done to date. Sailing the South African wild coast. 312 nautical miles of unsheltered coastline. No stops no options just 2 ports. With a hell of a lekker current in between, that is if you're going the right way. This week's episode sees us doing the last couple of improvements and changes on the boat before sailing off from Durban towards East L...
Coastal Sailing, Our Second passage from Durban to Richards Bay | Land Rats | EP63
มุมมอง 6673 ปีที่แล้ว
Welcome to another episode, believe it or not, this one was actually finished in time but took me more than 3 days to upload. Late or not here you have it. Late September just after completing my Day skippers ticket we set off for our next trip to Richards Bay, the water is a whole lot cleaner there and the club is a lot busier. I need one more coastal passage over 60nm to be able to get my coa...

Welcome to Another Episode of Land Rats, This week we're clearing out the garage. Most of the work has been completed on our sailboat and our boat is just about ready to stats sailing. Offshore Sailing, Durban To Richards Bay. Cape St Francis Catamaran
มุมมอง 1.7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
On the 9th of October 2021, we went for a sail from Durban, South Africa to Richards Bay South Africa on a 44ft Cape Saint Francis Catamaran that has been changed to 47ft by adding Sugar Scoops to the back. My First Sail on a Catamaran and a Lekker sail to be sure. It took some time getting used to the slap from the waves but the size, comforts, and speed that the boat has really made up for it...

Great trip
Howsit guys, what is happening with the channel? Are you still doing the trip?
Awesome stuff guys look forward to the next vid.
I built the 6-foot version of one of these many years ago to be the tender for my 16 sailboat, a Sparrow 16. I store it inside the boat so that I don't have to tow a dinghy. I has held up quite well for me. I even used it in Desolation Sound where the shores consist of super sharp rocks or oyster shells. When got home I had to touch up some of the bottom edges of the wood with more epoxy. I took the opportunity to add a bit more glass fabric to those spot that got worn. I would recommend two things to potential builders. 1) Don't skimp on the floor width. I did to not have to cut into a new piece of plywood. I plan to install the full-width floor pieces soon. 2) Use 3M-5200 marine adhesive/sealant. The instructions I used said to use silicone but it leaked. The 3M-5200 is a strong adhesive that also helps keep the PVC fabric in place.
Hello Sailor. Hoe gaan dit nog ? Wanneer kry ons weer 'n video?
Waaaar is julle nou??

Dagse. Waar kry jy kaart vir seil
Ek gebruik opencpn en Navionics. Navionics betaal mens 500 rand n jaar en open cpn moet mens net bietjie rondsoek vir cm93 kaarte, kan dit paar plekke verniet kry anders moet mens koop
glad to have come across your youtube video and enjoyed it fully, But I think your music played in the background was drowning what you were saying, at least that's how it came out for me over my pc. other than that enjoyed your content.
Thanks! Sorry about that i think it has improved a bit in the videos after
Its exciting to see you crossing an ocean. Enjoy
