The character of Prince Philip in these "early years" always strikes me as an unlikeable character. Always giving Elizabeth these near side-eye observations, behaving like a contemptuous young adult who disdains having to play second fiddle, etc. Unlike how the older "versions" of Philip are portrayed in the Crown, Matt Smith's version is a constant brooding distraction to most scenes.

I can not imagine how the weight of this must have hit her. I can not imagine not only losing a parent in 1 day but also becoming a sovereign of a nation. The combination of both is cruel. There was no time to mourn, and I am certain she adored her father. It's just so tragic

Matt Smith did such a great acting job as Philip giving that one ashen look to Claire Foy's Elizabeth like the sky had fallen.

And perhaps the saddest part of all was that those few minutes of the Duke of Edinburgh consoling her over her father's death would be the ONLY time she'd get to mourn him as her father's daughter for quite some time before she instantly had to respond as her father's heiress- immediately sending out regrets before getting ready to return to Great Britain to take over the crown and top position. It's not surprising that it would become her personal tradition to venture to Sandringham every February 6th whenever possible- to reflect on her father's life!

I remember how years ago I was in Phillip's position in telling my wife that her father was gone. May be different circumstances but the emotions were still the same. Dangdest hardest thing I had to tell my sweetheart as I loved the old man too. He was like a 2nd father to me. RIP Dad.
