Excellent cover - i have to admin my ear was not quite understanding the chromatic run without my guitar in hand, I could tell it was a chromatic run of 3 notes, but was not sure if it was root>root>b1>2 or root, b1,2,b3 by ear alone. The visuals helped. Here are my thoughts: The most interesting thing in this theme (for me) is the chromatic run which resembles a blue note but is actually not. It is a chromatic run in the aeolian scale against a root pedal (Ab) but uses the 3 note chromatic run which is very typical and understood, except in when using these intervals it is somewhat twisted. It runs like this 1, to b2 to 2. Typically you find this run in blues (4 to b5 to 5) however in this context it does something truly unique. It lands on a 2 chord but harmonically for that one second (to my ears) it implies a 2 major chord, ie Bb. (test this by playing an Abm > Bb > Abm) When you analyze what this means, it implies a slight moment where the scale borrows the II chord from the Lydian mode. There is no other option for a 2maj chord in a (mostly) aeolian scale. So basically he is micro switching modes, but it's not a "hard" key change, it's modal borrowing for tension, and because we still have an Ab pedal tone, it somewhat hides this micro switch as the ear perceives it as a "bluenote" chromatic run - but in my opinion it's way more than that ! subbed
