Ultimate Fender Pickup Comparison: Texas Specials vs Custom '69 vs Fat 50's
Having watched my old pickup comparison, I realized I should have included the Texas Specials since, to me, anyway, they sit right in between the fat 50's and the custom '69s.
The guitars are as follows:
Red - Fender American Standard Stratocaster (early 90's) with Fender Custom Shop Custom '69 Pickups.
Surf Green - Fender American Special Run Stratocaster with Fender Texas Special Pickups
Daphne Blue over Shell Pink - Fender American Standard Parts-Caster (American Standard Neck from 2014 on Body and hardware from 2013) - with Fender Fat 50's pickups.
Amp is a Fender Princeton Reverb '68 Custom Reissue

i prefer texas special
Listening on phone speakers the 69 sounds the best. 50s sound a bit muddy in the neck pos
Thank you
Texas Special Is the best…🎸🎶💥
¿Custom 69 es lo mismo que Custom shop 69?
they all sound distorted to me
50s pretty, articulate and detailed. Texas forward and fat sounding. 69 in the middle of both 50s and texas
Fat Texan C59 Special for me 😂
Yes, yes, but how do they sound on a right-handed Strat?! 😁I listened on JBL studio monitors that were properly eq'd. The Fat 50's - meh, they remind me of Tex-Mex pickups - un-useable without a notch filter. The Texas Specials - still too much bite (4K). The Custom 69's - more shimmer (8K to 16K). Shimmer is harder to get, and I've always seen Stratocasters as a light, smooth, expressive sound. I have other guitars that can do bite, even Fender Atomic's (humbuckers) can get up into the bite range, so for me, it's the 69's. Also, pickups with too much bite hit an amp in a way I don't like. It makes the valves put out gravel instead of sand. 'Might as well let a Strat shimmer, because it's harder to get other guitars to do that. Mr. Swan, that was an absolutely fantastic comparison!
Thanks for the comparison. Sounds to me like the tremolo on the amp is on all the time. Would have rather heard the pickups without it.
69's by a mile.
Cs69 all the way
Fat 50s Tex Sp 69
Outstanding comparison. I wonder about the drop in output on the Texas Specials?
Fat 50s sound the best the others have too much bass
I own both of the 69's and the Texas Specials.... I like the 69's better .
Very slight differences in specs between the Fat 50's and TS set, but the '69 a all slightly lower inductance at 2.3H. That was the standard from at least '67 on, and I believe It's misstated as 3H on the Fender site, which doesn't make sense for A5 poles at 5.6K of 42AWG. That's why they sound brighter, but I think they also have thine wire insulation, the resulting denser coil from which produces stronger lower harmonics. They all have A5 poles (with the outdated stagger finally addressed by brands like Tonerider and Waaah), but I wonder if the pole formula and Gauss is any different between them? The TS do have a very slight mid dip from eddy currents.
Trems floating, decked or blocked? Amazing comparison!
Best comparison I’ve seen. C69s do it for me, but I needed fat 50s for another, as I loved them. Now I’m debating the Tex specials 😂😂😂
Awesome tones. Do you still play?
Custom 69s sounded the best to my ear. Cool vid. Helpful too.
CS69s for the Ritchie Blackmore Deep Purple Tone with a Marshall Major
I like the transparency of the CS69s.. Sure ,theyre thinner sounding than the other girthier pickups , but they'll produce the correct sound for my favourites .Early Blackmore, Hendrix and 70s Dave Gilmour..The Texas and 50s won't do that .
I agree. The 50’s are too scooped for me and too much bottom. The Texas Specials sounded like somebody put a bag over the amp
No1 69s No 2 Texas No 3 Fat
The tight full bass of the 69s is just incredible but honestly no matter how ridiculous it may sound my maple neck player with original pickups gives them a serious run for the money.
What's your favorite ?
Cs69, the sound I'm looking for, so "nasal" But ...why i have same cs69 in a fender Player with Pauferro and the sound is not the same ? I have an Bugera infinium v55 valve amp. 0:23 @01:39 I removed the texas special because they were too sharp. Is it possible that it's because I don't have the same woods? (neck & Body of my fender Player ?
Thanks for this! Was leaning towards the Texas Specials and found a lot of comparison videos where the sound quality was poor or the person was playing in a way that you couldn't tell the range of the pickups. Texas Specials still my first choice
if you did the Fender Blender wiring - your exellent Fender Strats give you 2 more positions All Strats sound cool and the different Pickups does their Part well over the Fender Princetone reverb Amp with the celestion Speaker 😁😁😁 really a good comparison and as we all know a Pickup has no Sound
Once you install high end pickups you can achieve any other "pickup tone" HOWEVER, very fun to discuss
'69s do it for me!
I wait for the Right handed comparison, but these lefty's sound good too
Left handers are weirdos
my opinion: 1º - Custom 69 (neck/middle), Fat 50 (bridge) | 2º - Texas Special (neck/mid/bridge)
Tex mex win
I vote for Custom 69 and Texas specials
I love all of these pick ups. For me they rapresent the true strat tone. Of course it dependes of what you want. In any case, I think that CS69 are more balanced
Me left hand too😅
Appreciate this detailed demo. I am not happy with my SCN noiseless pickups on my Deluxe V Neck, and am ready to change them. I like the Fat 50s. I wonder how they will sound with the S-Switch, or should I get a loaded pickguard. I’d like to swap just the pickups since it has an aged white pickguard. Hopefully the pickup covers will work with the new pickups. Any advice I appreciate.
I have a deluxe with SCN’s also. Did you get the S1 switch to work or change whole setup? Not much info out there about this. I’m look to change myself.
@@TheFreeman4955 you’re absolutely right. There’s very little information on it. Paul David’s did his and was the closest thing that explained it all. You’re going to have three wires with the SCN and two wires with a typical pickup. They will not be wired anything like a regular circuit. Some will go to the S1 in various points and you’ll have a ground that goes to the pot. What you do is forget about the third ground wire and wire the rest exactly where the noiseless ones were. They will work fine, but the S1 engaged will sound a little muddy. I personally found the S1 useless with regular strat pickups (I installed Fat 50s by the way) but with the switch disengaged, they worked really well. What I did is I built a custom pickguard with some nifty modifications, and kept my noiseless ones wired to the original pickguard with the S1, that way I have the original electronics and can swap if I ever want to. Hope this helps. If you need any other help with this, let me know.
Definitely 69's the Texas specials disappointed.
To me the pickups sounded better WITH the flannel shirt on. I'm gonna buy one. Thanks for the video, very helpful!
No CCR cover ever works without the flannel shirt either!!!
I have a set of Fat 50s and they are great but after years (10+) of regular gigs, at gig volume the bridge doesnt cut through enough for solos even set as high as the pickup can be without the strings being affected by the magnetic pull or touching. I recently replaced the bridge with a Duncan Custom Staggered and really like it. It still is 'all strat' but it has the juice to cut through the mix and be heard! Might be the best strat bridge I've tried for 'classic strat. I have several Strats and am looking for something else for a different neck sound in the others. Its hard to beat the Fat 50s neck. Not sure there's a better neck strat pickup for classic rock blues tones out there
Wanka chanka chanka.. so much more of this guitar can do
The difference is not significant and most of it probably lies in the placebo area. This is basically the same core tone. Replacing any of those pickups is a waste of money.
Texas Specials for me.
Between the 50s and the 69s, which ones seem more amenable to a smooth rich sound? Like John Fruschiante?
Man .. I threw my air pods in, kicked back in bed , and got absolutely lost for 7:29 .. Great sound from all of them but I have to say the 69’s take this one! Nice collection , you have great taste!! 🍻
They all sound great! And now i know i want a Princeton.
what happened?
Go figure, I've been using Texas Specials and Fat 50's but those Custom 69's are closer to the tone I have in my head... oops
