1988 Jeep Wrangler YJ Brake Light Switch Replacement Dim LED Brake Lights Fixed Part 2
A video taken by me, at home, using a video editor called WeVideo, on my phone. Replacing a Brake Light Switch in my 1988 Jeep Wrangler YJ 4.2 L 258 Inline 6. I am not a professional and have never done this before. I was having trouble with my LED Brake Lights being too dim during the day and not bright enough to see over my tail lights at night. This video is part 2 of 2.

    I know this is crazy old, but is there any chance you know where I can find the nylon bushings and spacers? I'm missing one of each.

      Sorry dude, I haven't seen them sold anywhere. 🤷🏻‍♂️ You might be stuck with having to fabricate something. It's really not essential for the brake light switch to function though. Just reduces wear/tear.

    I just replace the switch in my 1988YJ. I could not have done it without your video. I couldn’t see a thing and had to do everything by field, and having watched your video I was able to do it. I wouldn’t have known what to do otherwise. Thank you so much.

    Awesome video Clayton! This one really saved my A**! Did not pull my seat, so had to scrunch both arms under the dash while sideways. 😆

    Just did this repair. Removing the front seat allowed me to get inside and lay on my back. Makes it a bit easier to look up there and get things out and back in.

    Recently bought a 92’ wrangler. A bit of a project. For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to power the rear of the vehicle! I got the car sort of taken apart, and I put everything back together. (Mostly fuses and snapping wire harness). There is a bundle of wires that go from drivers side taillight and hard top electrical connection, all the way up to just under steering column. A strange round pin connector that seems to power everything in the back but there’s nothing I have to plug it into! Do you have this type of connection in your jeep? It looks just like mine and I have same brake switch

    I just bought a '90 Cherokee with the same break light switch. Couldn't get the damn thing out. Then found your videos. Understood the assembly enough to fix it. Thanks for your vid. Well done!

    Will this make your brake lights stay on after you turn the jeep off and get out of the it?? I have to raise the pedal like a MM to get them to turn off.

    • @CLAYTORRR
      @CLAYTORRR 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Huh? I'm not sure? After you take your foot off the pedal, you can reach down, pull it up and it goes up even higher? Sounds like the return spring on your brake pedal may be worn out, or worse your master cylinder if it doesn't press the pedal all the way back up after you press it down.

    Took me six months to get around to it, but my brake lights finally work again. Thanks for being so thorough with this video.

      It's very tight under there..maybe the practitioner is required to show a CONFINED SPACES cert. if they hit you up.

    Thank you brother. I have the same year as yours. It took care of my problem. Just wished my hands was half the size. If someone would ask me to replace the $8.00 part, I would charge them $300.00. It was a b.... to replace.

    Thanks for this video. I couldn't get that outside 9/16 nut off either, so I loosened the 5/8 bolt and I held the 9/16 nut as you did. Worked great and I was able to finish the job. Thanks.

    This was great man, thanks. My master cylinder started leaking right where it bolts to the brake booster and the fluid ate thru the booster gaskets and both things failed on me. I was putting it all back together and had no idea how to reinstall it. Your video was very educational, thanks!

    Great video!! This is super helpful. I just bought a 1990 YJ and the brake lights would get stuck ON all the time. So I figured it was a problem with the switch getting stuck. I got a new switch (like the one you have), and tried to do the swap out. The one in there, it turns out it upside from what you show. Also, there wasn't a nylon bushing on the push rod like you show on 8:11. The metal sleeve fits fairly snugly in the push rod hole, so I'm the bushing would have to be super thin to accommodate both the sleeve and a bushing. How thin was that bushing?? Anyway, I installed my new switch as you showed, but the thing just stays on no matter what. Any idea what could be causing that?

    • @CLAYTORRR
      @CLAYTORRR 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you I'm really glad the video helped. As for the thickness of the bushing, it was pretty thin but I don't know the actual thickness. I'm also not sure what could be causing your issue, the fact that you don't have a nylon bushing in your pushrod, screams to me that you're not the first person to take that switch out. I'd take another look under there and make sure whoever took that out before you didn't mess something up.
