quasi 25 minuti di video per concludere il nulla
Well that's not the solution I was hoping for when I came across this video. I thought I had been doing something wrong all this time. No chance of a return now either. I'm really disappointed in Veritas. I thought the brand was a bit more premium than that, and as this is my first Veritas tool, I will have a hard time trusting them with future purchases. Thanks for taking the time to publish this!
Yeah it is quite disappointing, especially I guess if you have no path of return or exchange. I don’t have many Veritas tool but I will say in their defence the tools I do own have been superb and troublesome free obviously with the exception of this jig. I guess you will have to re adjust to change the degree in order for the secondary bevel if you want it parallel
@3:15 Ah yes, just the tip!
You got to tease it 😅
Instruction from the BLUE MAN, poor lost soul
@@nightsthunder7389 😂🤣😂
You can adjust the height of the folding tables by rotating the horizontal hinge bolts as they have eccentric ends.
Welp, I just ordered mine, The MkII Narrow guide kit....Hopefully I get a perfectly made one..... Either way I will say this....For that price I would expect better quality assurance/inspection done by veritas in house....that is supposed to be something any customer should expect with the more premium priced tools. Shame on them for so many making it past inspection and hopefully they found the inspection issue whether that be a lax policy or certain inspectors not doing their jobs....FIRE THEM!!! 😜😜
I hope you get a good one because when it works it really does work great. Very curious to hear about your experience so please come back and tell us how you get on 👌🤞
The irony of the Banggood jig being next to the festool and bridge city boxes 😂. In all seriousness you've convinced me to try one of these out. I usually make my dowels with a router table but this looks like a great quick and dirty way to knock out a few smaller ones when the situation arises.

@@oc_geek337 heya thanks, it’s the Optima D23 pro, it’s ok, it’s my only drill press so I have no real comparison BUT I have my eye on a few new presses that feature changeable speeds. This is the only gripe I have, it’s a long process changing speed belts

How do you mean glue? I didn’t use any here just silicone but I guess you could replace the silicone with hot glue perhaps? You would probably need to do a test run first
Really wish you had given Lie Nielsen a go. I have the HG4 and can’t imagine why it’s even in the conversation; the biggest piece of crap BCT’s has ever made and I have tools of theirs spanning 40+ years which are all brilliant.
@@TheSMEAC mainly for those that don’t have it. I didn’t have the LN but Iv actually been kindly sent one now by one of my viewers so I will likely be doing a follow up video featuring the LN when it arrives
Good video. You appear to have a mechanical/technical background, which is illustrated in the in-depth content of your video. You remind me of they saying I created a long time ago for my handyman business. I put considerable thought into what defines a Handyman. The saying states that "A Handyman is a pragmatic problem solver, skilled in mind and body, who applies curiosity to things which require repair or improvement". You clearly embody this definition. Happy New Year, and keep the videos coming!
Hello Paul, Thanks for posting this (nearly) exhaustive comparison of the three guides. I'm a bit surprised why you didn't finish sharpening all three chisels; you only did the bevel (???) However, I'm also intrigued by those aluminum flattening plates. There are loads of these honing plates, some that you even sprinkle with diamond dust. I suppose the Shapton and the DMT are among some of the best, but they are extremely pricey. Although I'm an old boy (66) I am new to the honing guide game. I was taught, and used free-hand all my working life. When I bought my retirement home in Western France, there was an Eclipse (British) honing guide in the garage, and it came as a revelation. i have quite a few tools, of which a few Japanese chisels, purchased early eighties. These I have managed to maintain the original bevels flat (not easy on the 2mm one!) I've been toying with the idea of treating myself to a Veritas, because I have several of their tools, and they are superb pieces of engineering- even beyond Lie Nielsen (I may get shot for this 😄). The problem with the MK II is the you have to add on accessories- a bit like the Tormek, and it can end up pretty costly. Any pointers as to a decent diamond honing plate please? Is your set available on the market? It's so important to have a very fait sole on chisels and plane irons. Greetings from France.
@@musamor75 hi thankyou for your comment. Just to clarify, what did you mean by not finish sharpening, I created the primary bevel and secondary bevel on the stones and off camera stropped to 5000. Did you mean flatten the back? Yes Iv been very intrigued by the DMT stones myself but these plates from M power tools have proven fantastic I really can’t recommend them enough. They are a UK company but distribute via sautershop in Germany so that’s the best place to purchase them from in my opinion 😁 Happy sharpening with which ever system you choose and yes, this video was most definitely exhausting 😅 have a look on my channel at my other videos, you will see one on the diamond plates and some issues you may have with the Veritas
Thank you for the comparison, Paul. Leave it to Bridge City to complicate what should be a simple process and charge a punishing price for the privilege. When I'm using my chisels and planes, I refresh the microbevel frequently, and if I had to go through the Bridge City process each time, I would likely sharpen less and suffer the consequences of a dull edge. Sharpening should be easy and fast enough to not hinder the workflow. Unfortunately, I didn't have several decades to master the free hand method, so I rely on the honing guide for fast, easy, and consistent results. I started my sharpening process with the Eclipse guide, but then changed to the Lie Nielsen honing guide when I replaced my aging chisels. All of my planes and all but a few of my chisels are Lie Nielsen and work perfectly with the LN guide. However, I have some other dovetail chisels with sides that increase in thickness from the edge, similar to your Kirschen chisels. These have the same problem you experienced with the Hongdui guide and do not fit in the beveled section of the blocks. Fortunately, they do work well with the blocks designed for the LN mortise chisels.
@@Mike--K oh man I would love to try the Lie Nielsen honing guide, from what I see it’s simply superior, all my planes are LN. Maybe one day in the future il get to try it but until then I can only imagine 😁
I have tried a few guides and think that the veritas is not very good for chisels but good for plane blades due to the slipping effect. I purchased one from Bangood which is a copy I think of woodpeckers which is very good. Personally if you can't free hand sharpen you really can't beat the old eclipse guide and is cheap as chips and gets the job done in quick time.
@@garyblake3130 ah yes that guide has caught my eye apparently it’s great, I just haven’t had the chance to get it and at this point i think Iv purchased enough 😅 yeah I started on the eclipse type the only thing that annoyed me was the roller base was very narrow and you had to watch your pressure distribution a little more but like I say in the video the Veritas is my favourite. The narrow grips absolutely eliminate slippage
20 mm is actually closest to 3/4 of an inch. 25.4 mm is more or less equivalent to 1 inch. Regarding the Verita’s slipping, when you tighten it down you have to tighten each side a little bit at a time trying to keep them even. If you tighten down one side a bunch & then tighten the other side it can feel like you’ve wrenched it down as far as it will go but the uneven clamping will cause it to slip fairly easily.
Yeah that’s why I set it to one mark before the 1” I’m guessing it would be 3/4. Yeah it’s something il be revisiting, never had that issue but can definitely see how that would cause slippage if the clamp is set skewed
New video idea: the when wet/dry grinder and attachments from tormek edit: head to head against honing guide.
😁 if they send me one 😁
I use the Tormek as part of my sharpening routine for chisels and plane irons, but limit it to establishing the 25-degree primary hollow grind bevel. I have two friends who use only the Tormek for their chisels and plane irons, and are very happy with the results. The spend more time refreshing the edges than I do, but it's results that count. I prefer to use the honing guide and water stones to establish the 30-degree second and 35-degree third bevels, as I was taught by the late David Charlesworth. Refreshing the edge takes just over one minute, and is usually four or five passes on the 10,000 grit stone. When it starts taking longer, after about 15 trips to the water stone, I go back to the Tormek for a new hollow grind.
I have the Veritas for years now. Its great, but when setting up, you must remember to have the cam for the roller in the right spot so you can shift it for your micro bevel. I'm guilty of forgetting...😅
@@robertmceuen3630 hahahahaha yeah I always forget after Iv done the micro then go to do another chisel and ruin the grind because of not remembering to reset 😅
looks beautiful, must do similar toolholder to take care of my mess. Have to do ist without a shaper, but seams to be also skill training.
Yeah the shaper sure does make easy work of it but did take some learning 😁 simple table saw and router with jig could knock out same thing too
Hi, I agree to the superb qualitiy of FISCH. I own only a 40mm Forstner from Fisch, but it needs much less force than a 15mm "standard" Forstner as comparison. Still saving the Money for the wohle set.... Keep going.
@@BjornWinter it will be well worth it in the end when you get the set 😁
Thank you Paul! A nice comparison.
Very happy you liked it 😁
The best honing guide you can use hands down! Now that I’ve seen your results mine came out crooked secondary bevel as well.🤔
There definitely seems to be an issue in production with these
@ maybe because it doesn’t have a guide to lay the chisel flat against the jig? Only when you’re setting the protrusion.
@ what was the other honing jig you purchased? You showed a box.
@@robertmunguia250 I actually have a new video going over 3 guides, I go over in depth (34min 😅) the chisel remains square I think it was a QC issue
@@robertmunguia250 bridge city, I just released a video on 3 guides
For me, the narrow chisel attachment for the veritas is essential for any chisel that fits
I’d say so too but wanted to keep it fairly entry level and standard as the narrow grips are an additional extra unless you get the deluxe set I believe 🤔
Great Video Thankyou especially as iam looking at upgrading (or making) my homing guide and had been looking at these three and also the Richard Kell. Simplicity, accuracy and repeatability are key. It seems like there may be other issues with the bridge city but as a concept could it be more easily set up using a home made angle finder either as marks on your bench or separate blocked on a small board?
no I don't think it can as the wheel moves so that would be an additional variable, were as the other two just have the blade length as a variable the bridge city has the roller too hence having to reference the chisel back and bevel. Hope I explained myself clearly 😅
Thanks for taking the time to make this! Good wishes from the States.
im happy this was useful for you :-)
That one hipster recording him on the plane was DEFINITELY on the other side of the political spectrum. 😂
I really wish I purchased that Makita miter saw instead of my festool.
@@CustomWoodWorkDecor that’s interesting, I wanted to upgrade to the festool but I had a look at the 120 and just didn’t like a couple of aspects about it. What makes you say you wished you had gotten the Makita? Cut capacity?
@ I have the 120 and not the battery one. It is so underpowered. I have only been cutting 3/4” soft pine and the blade jams in the wood more times than I can count. The dust collection is horrendous. Every youTuber swears by it, it’s how i was sold, but they are all partners with festool. This saw is garbage. My dewalt was cutting through a 4x4 in one pass with much better dust collection.
Cool design. But it would fall apart sooner than later. I'd used a dowels thought the 3 pieces for extra strength and character
@@thejaptoolguyYT I guess it really depends on its usage the previous ones have been solid but the dowel idea is interesting from the character perspective, I love little accent features and dowels would definitely do this, especially a nice hardwood contrasting colour 👌
Thanks for this.
Glad it helped, seems to get a lot of people 😅

Found this very useful. I'm looking at this jig and for the price I want to have a good experience with it. My expectations are fully set now - thanks. Plus, I would have gone throught the whole process of verifying that it wasn't just me, too. Can I ask why you're in CZ? I'm not 100% but you sound UK'ish? Thanks for the video.
Hey sorry for the late reply, if you haven’t bought one already I’m going to be doing a video comparing 3 known jigs but this will be likely after Xmas because time is limited for me at the moment. I decided to move to the Czech Republic from London to raise my kids.
What an absolute shill of a video. Comparing a tungsten tipped full aluminium body to a plastic body and plastic marker. Not to mention price.... When your main point of preference is due to weight, I cannot help but wonder how much microjig paid for you to make this awful video. Please do not treat your viewers for fools.
@@BLOODLOVERZ1 😂🤣😂 sensitive much? I cannot help but wonder how much Hongdui paid you for this comment 😅
Hi, I have the Metabo DH330 and I use it with fairly hard woods like merbau, jatoba, ash, meranti and mahogany. The blades get blunt quite quickly. Replacement blades are expensive. How is this with the IGM PS33? Do the carbide blades stay sharp longer than a 2 blades planer?
@@erixven in my experience carbide blades stay sharper a lot longer and the added benefit is they are multi faceted so that means when the one side does get blunt I can rotate 🙌
I use a piece of of wood with two dowels and a pin half way between them and have done so for over 40 years to find the mid-point of stock
Yeah this is a great method for sure 👌
Kataba?
Probably the best lesson I learned was to strop tools regularly. It’s surprising how long you can keep a blade sharp with regular stropping. A piece of leather mounted on a flat block, MDF works well, and a little polishing compound can maintain a sharp edge for days.
This is great advice, prevention rather then cure I guess, keeping that edge for as long as possible is the best bet I guess.
I think part of the problem is that the micro bevel adjustment only increases the bevel angle by a couple of degrees. For me this isn’t enough difference and it exaggerates any inaccuracies; 5 degrees is preferable.
yeah I believe its 2-3°. 5° is definitely a safe bet. since this video I have acquired a couple more guides which I will be comparing to each other and doing another video on it
If you have a digital vernier caliper and a marking gauge do you really need any of these jigs?
@@heystarfish100 quite frankly you don’t need a lot of it, guess the question is do you want it
@ For as many times as I might use one of these half-gauges I can honestly tell you I don’t think I need either. I do own and use many tools from Hongdui and MICROJIG but have no use for these things.
@ I can appreciate that, but speaking for myself, when ever I need to do a half measure I’m always reaching for the microjig, especially so with band saw stuff or router table use were I’m transferring the half measure to a tool height/depth etc
Hey, thanks for the video. I just purchased this and it is not working for me. What happens in my case is that the wood only goes in for about an inch or so and stops. It won't cut further. I don't know enough to try and figure this out, but did you run into anything similar? Had high hopes, but it seems this might just be more wasted money on Banggood. I think I'm almost done with them completely. Again, I used all your suggestions (thanks, they made sense), but when I went to drill it through, the blank of wood gets about an inch or so, then just spins. Any help is appreciated. I can post a vid if desired.
@@jeffisgett yes, I run into this, I find the tooth/blade has to catch the wood again so I usually start changing the angle at which I’m holding and applying gentle pressure into the device hoping it catches again and starts re cutting, if that doesn’t work i will pull out a little and go back in.
I found a video to be too long and drawn out just to get to the point is it any good
sweet design - chapeau bas!
