Wild Camping - Why?
Why would anybody go wild camping? It's had work, tiring and not the most comfortable or convenient thing to do. Yet in sometimes its the only way to experience the outdoors in certain locations and times.
In this video I share how I've recently come to realise that I'm not wild camping in the UK for the actual camping, but more of a means to an end to experience the great outdoors the way I want to and to support exploration and hiking.

What do Americans Think of the UK Self Defense Laws?

I've had quite a few negative comments from American's now regarding laws on self-defence and gun control in the UK, specifically in response to my videos on personal security whilst wild camping in the UK. Preppers Shop UK 24 Hour Ration Pack Review

I recently purchased three, British army style 24 hour ration packs from Preppers Shop UK. What follows is a review of the packs I received. 24 hour ration packs are ideal for camping, walking and bushcrafting although they can be an expensive way to buy food. The offer of £9.99 at preppers shop seemed like very good value for money and so I was keen to find out if they lived up their description.

    Glad you enjoyed your visit to the forest, I hope you find a more peaceful location when you come back. There are campsites at Ashurst and Matley so it’s quite well-trodden around there. If you’re coming by train, have a look around the next station, Beaulieu Road. There are some amazing quiet areas, just stay away from the campsites & large car parks. I’ve lived in the forest for over 15 years & never had any issues with a sly camp out, I’m sure you’ll be fine, especially with your camping etiquette as can be seen in your other videos.

    I just turned 57 and I feel like 25. I run marathons and I'm in great shape. I'm unwilling to pay 30 quid for a few square meters of grass and wild camping is getting more appealing here on the continent every year with the current prices of accomodations. I can afford the fines and I'm pretty sure it's a financially sound idea to take my chances wildcamping and it's a lot more fun than joining the crowd with their campers, coffee insulation flasks and toast with peanut butter and crossword puzzles. Next journey will be a no budget holiday in Germany by bike just for the fun of it. While wildcamping in the past I've seen fireflies and squirrels. After walking three days I smelled like cinnamon and buttercups,. I crossed Germany for less than 30 pounds from the Dutch border. What could ever beat the joy of travelling no budget just like we did when we were twenty?

    The NF is off bounds for wild camping/car camping. The powers that be cracked down on such activities way back in the 1950's and 1960's. The word "Forest" is a legal designation as a Roysl hunting forest, not an indication of tree cover. The NF is a mix of heath, bog, plantation and ancient woodland. It's a worked landscape, but so enchanting. Be careful of ticks!

    The key in the uk, is to understand the threat level. This will then give you the level of response that you may use. Its as simple as that. Dont get me wrong, if my life is threatened with a weapon, and im unarmed, i would rather be on a manslaughter charge, then be the main attraction down the morgue.

    • @dogdadoutdoors
      @dogdadoutdoors 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think that pretty much sums up the 'Reasonable and Proportional' rule. In the UK we are unlikely to face an attacker armed with a firearm and so the threat level is considerably lower and so we don't need to respond with deadly force as a first response in the same way as many American's feel, which is a very different situation to that an American may find themselves in when in America. But if we are attacked with say a knife or club then we absolutely can take reasonable steps to defend ourselves, based on that threat level. Its only when the threat level changes people tend to fall foul of the law, like the father who was jailed for 'defending his family' after two attempted burglars sped away on motorbikes and he drove after them and hit them with his car. There was no longer a threat. Or the Farmer Tony Martin who shot and killed a burglar as he was running away.

      Ah no, that's not accurate. If you are born in the UK you are typically a British Citizen which means you can live an work in the UK free of any immigration controls. British Subjects where typically those who had a close connection to Great Britain, such as from the common wealth countries, but being a British Subject doesn't give you a right to work and live in the UK the same way as citizenship does. Not many people qualify as British subjects these days, you can apply if you are stateless or come from an overseas British territory, but it doesn't give you the same rights as a Citizen.

    I find it sad. As a kid brought up in The Lakes we would camp all Summer long. Swim in the becks, plunge pools or lakes. Cook food usually Triangia or other ‘artificial’ means but sometimes open fire. Then sleep undisturbed and leave in the morning with no signs we were there. Open fires were always cut into the ground and turf or original cover replaced. These days it is so bad names like ‘stealth’ and ‘wild’ are used for a basic human need, to be able to wander, roam and move about the countryside unmolested. 😢

    • @dogdadoutdoors
      @dogdadoutdoors 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thing is, a lot of kids these days just don't know how to behave outdoors. I had to call the fire brigade tonight because a bunch of youths had lit what I can only call a bonfire, it was about 2.5 metres in diameter and about 2 metres high, on peat ground about 100m from the nearest house. Peat burns underground for ages and spreads under the fire breaks so its a real issue, one of the nearby trees had also caught fire. I walked past with my dog, called it in, dropped the dogs back home, filled up two watering cans, walked up to about 7 youths and explained (politely) why they couldn't do that before dumping both watering cans on their fire. Had to go back with 2 more cans to get it under control, then the fire brigade had to send a landrover in with another water to make sure it was properly out. And of course, there was rubbish everywhere. Its no wonder we have to not draw attention to ourselves with fools like that around.

    Hi - I have just bought one of these, what do you make of the lid? Does it let water in? How is the flap supposed to be configured with the lid? Thanks

    • @dogdadoutdoors
      @dogdadoutdoors 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I like it. Its a floating lid so its designed to be raised or lowered so you can stuff more on. Ideally the lid goes over the whole bag though so its just mtp over mtp for maximum water resistance. The MTP material is PVC backed which is totally waterproof, but it will still get through where the stitching is, but its pretty water-resistant. I tend to fabsil mine, it not only helps avoid stains, it means water tends to roll off (at least initially) so its less likely to soak through the stitching. It buys you a little more time at least.

    The British system gives more protections to the criminal than the victim. Criminals have guns, knives and machetes, law abiding citizens are not allowed to. The fact that if someone tries to kill you and you could get in more trouble for anything you do in response is insane. "Reasonable force" is not defined and do you really trust the courts to determine that?

      @dogdadoutdoors 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It really doesn't give more protections to the criminal. If you are caught carrying a firearm the minimum sentence is 5 years and that is just for possession in a public place. If you have a knife outside a small foldable pocket knife without good reason, you can go to prison for up to 4 years. Does it still happen, yes. Is it greatly reduced, absolutely. The idea that you can get into trouble for 'anything' you do to protect yourself from getting into trouble is incorrect. Its exactly that mis-conception I am addressing in this video. Your actions just have to be reasonable and proportional. If somebody is trying to kill you it is reasonable and proportional to defend yourself more robustly. Do I trust the courts to judge what is reasonable? Mostly, yes. There is always gong to be a margin of error where the courts get it wrong. Now if your attacker has a firearm and you have a firearm can you both pull your guns out can you 100% guarantee you will be the one who doesn't get shot? No, of course not. I would take the chances of a court getting it wrong after careful deliberation over the chances of surviving a gun fight any day. Particularly when they just wanted to steal my phone. I removed the second comment you made, not because i necessarily disagree, (data is data) but because comments like that can get my channel de-monetised, hope you understand. I suspect the thing you mentioned is culturally driven rather than genetic and as I mentioned in the video, our cultures are different which is another reason we don't need them. I should point out though even the remaining 40% rate of homicides in the U.S is still over 3 times higher than we have in the UK.d no And no, it wouldn't be more appropriate to consider another country that has guns but low crime rate because I am NOT arguing against guns in America. I am explaining why we don't need them in the UK, which I hope I made very clear in the video.

      @@dogdadoutdoors Thing is, whilst what you say is true, criminals, by definition, don’t tend to obey laws. As a Brit now living in Australia (similar gun and self defence laws) I would rather have the US system and laws. In an ideal world, we would have a blend of the best bits of both….

      @@dogdadoutdoors I have no issues with stopping the wrong types from legally buying firearms…..but there is no shortage of illegal firearms available though many sources for those that want them. I’m talking more the nonsense of self defence laws, though. The law favours the criminal, and often penalises the victim, and that is completely arse about.

    As a 60 something Canadian man, I would point out the key difference between reasoning with a person as opposed to reasoning with a grizzly, black bear, brown bear, mountain lion/cougar, wild boar, pack of wolves etc., etc... Get's a 'Like'. Take care all...

    I used to do work for a policeman who on several occasions told me that there is no bad situation that a gun can't make very much worse. Apart from having to deal with badly injured livestock, I think he is right.

    In 40 years of wild camping I've never had a problem with people. I've camped in bear country in the US and had no issue, in Africa with no issue...I did get bitten by a fox on Dartmoor once though and wished I'd had bear spray, lol.

      @@andycoombes161 Definitely. I think its just fear in an environment people are not used to. The isolation, the animal sounds they can't identify, just feeling vulnerable with a thin bit of nylon between you and the world as you sleep rather than a locked door etc. We are pretty vulnerable when we sleep.
