1925 Kompact Phonograph
I made a very casual video of opening and playing one of my Kompact Portable Phonographs. I believe this model is the first type from that brand and was made about 1925.

Mark Williams here. Eddie Z had me mix streaming audio for The Hamiltones, performing live in The Vault Studio at the Playroom. I love these guys' blend of R&B with Quartet! A vamp seemed to have a stable blend, so I took a half minute video sweep of the control room. I compare the mix on several types of monitors here, but mostly used the mighty Auratones to blend this one.

Thorens TD 124 restored by STS, 2017

In 2017 I had my 1964 Thorens TD-124 turntable and SME arm restored by Greg and the fine craftsmen at STS Turntables in Tennessee. how was STS to work with?
I dealt with Greg and they did a great job! He kept me up on progress with occasional photos and returned my TD-124 in new condition. That was a good five years ago and it's still running beautifully.

I've known about bullseye lanterns with their shutters for many years (thanks to Dungeons and Dragons, of all things), but this is the first time I've seen good photographs of actual examples. Mass produced, affordable tools, from a time when consumer goods might still last a century. I'd guess they used whale oil or vegetable oil in the early days, before kerosene became a common item. Such a thing would probably cost $50 or more in today's world -- as much because there's no volume demand, as because both materials and labor are so much more expensive than they were when Victoria was the "young queen".

@@MarkRWilliams I looked and found the link at the bottom for repro dark lanterns. Four hundred bucks?! With less emphasis on reproducing the 19th century esthetic, I think these could be manufactured for less than a quarter of that figure -- at least in plain zinc- or tin-plated sheet steel. Not much demand for a no-battery hand light these days, though, with a smart phone (with its built-in flashlight) on every belt, in every purse, etc. and hand-held LED/rechargeable lights that can throw a beam spot a quarter mile or more...
That is where I found out about them as well.

I’m not selling the reproductions, just pointing out the source. Those folks sell and make all sorts of lanterns and supplies, and the police lantern reproductions have been used for film production, I believe.
Oil lamps, new and antique, of every description are still on the market. And collectors and users abound for all of them. Is anyone manufacturing reproductions of these dark lanterns?
Oh, it's "dark" because you can hide the light.

Really informative video, I always wondered about these lanterns, and your video was very { pardon the word choice } enlightening. Just a question: do you know of any companies that are making working reproductions of old dark lanterns, or even just torches { i.e. electric flashlights } made up to look like the old 19th century models?
@@lordbarristertimsh8050 Thank you, and yes W. T. Kirkman makes a high quality replica. They supply film productions as well as lantern enthusiasts, so the replicas are not inexpensive. Looks like a 40s okeh, be cautious with later 40s-50s records on mica acoustic machines, they wear down a lot faster and can over power the reproducer causing mica problems.

A lovely rebuild and thanks for sharing. I have a TD 124 Mk2 that’s about to have an overhaul , I think it’s only fair after 51 years of making fantastic music! As I’m in the U.K. the ‘local’ experts are Hanze HiFi in the Netherlands so a continental weekend trip is on the card’s. Could you tell me the album that you played for the video please?
Is there a fuse anywhere inside the turntable? I have my dads old turntable which was working fine before it went into storage and is excellent condition. Twenty years later its completely dead. Any ideas what I could check for? Thanks
STS did my rebuild and many of these photos were taken by them during the process. I recommend their work as professional and fairly priced. Enjoy your TD-124!

I just got my first TD124/3009 in just about the same shape as yours was found. I have recently gone through the motor, lube all the pivots, and cleaned the tonearm to almost your sparkle. I also seem to have the same Plinth system and like you wanna keep it. What style were the grommets between the base and mounting board? STS does amazing work! Could I also ask what it cost? Many Thanks, Ken
