    ive been a bit silent here recently coz, and not to sound forbodng here, we're entering the phase of the show where i genuinly forget what happens. ill explain more when you get to the end of the show, but in general i find the latter half of the show to be far in a way worse than the first... in other aspects, zamsher is that ghostly mentor dude from zangills flashback, a race of alien samurai, one of whom was a recurring side character from 2006s ultraman mebius. considering the what characters role in this episode was, i assume this was probably a case of "lets just get a costume out of storage that could work for the scene" kinda deal ala gomora and red king on the news in arc ep 1. speaking of which, both zangill and last ep's mogusion were designed personally by episode director / arc showrunner takanori tsujimoto.

    im glad im not the only one who considered the shagong inconsistency. im pretty sure ep 1 said they couldnt naturally grow that big and only the individual infected with the parasite could, so that just signals to me that theyre already reducing shagong to just a generic fodder kaiju which is a bit of a shame. aside from that, this episode not only continues my view of director masayoshi takasue excelling in character drama, but these past few episodes have been seemingly hinting at something; arc acts quite a bit more brasen and dare i say cocky compared to yuma. clearly yuma's input is required for things like the attack mix ups, but arc / rution is very much the being in control, and his personality seems pretty opposed to yuma's. i hope that later in the show they draw attention to this and create some conflict between the two over it, much like z and blazar but done a lot more naturally with it being subtly seeded in the earlier episodes like this as opposed to those shows just kinda going "oh i guess the host and the ultra have had a falling out in episode 11 now". regardless, next week in an un-numbered recap episode coz some important thing (likely baseball) is happening at the same time so they know noone in japan's gonna watch it so theyre filling the air time with a quick recap ep, may be worth a quick mini-review coz it looks like itll at least be fun (plus there's a reference in the preview to the kaiju from ultra q episode 26 which is an unexpected surprise).

      Regarding Shagong, I expect a lot from Ultraman because it is a quality product. It's too bad they dropped the ball on this. Maybe they should have just use more Red Kings? I know they showed then in that news reel from episode 1 or 2, but I don't see why that would be an issue.

    oh look, the plot's back. ok thats a bit harsh, but like, following eps 10 to 12 that to me seems like taguchi just trying to do the eps 10 to 12 of z mini-arc, but ever so slightly different, its nice to actually see progression to the main plotline was nice to see as the eps were coming out. that 1-shot fight sequence was certainly neat, but they clearly perfected this with arc's premiere in terms of disguising the cuts better and not cheating by having the fight take place both at night to make things easier to hide, but also all in front of a greenscreen to further this. word of advice of ep 15, that ep is a super major tribute to episode 15 of the original ultraman, which i would HIGHLY recommend watching before discusing the blazar ep, perhaps even making a comparison out of the two because, even though taguchi has stated the OG series is his favorite ultra show, the blazar ep is like almost a carbon copy of the original episode in parts, so judging the blazar ep on its own merits and as a comparison to the original ep could be an interesting though experiment to do.

    i do have to agree with your sentiment that in a sense, not in the way that i found the episode particularly bad persay, but its just so forgettable. i feel it especially meh when the series was marketted as having a family dynamic pay a pivital role in the series' plot, but this is really the first instance of such a thing occuring, yknow, like half way into the show pretty much. your confusion on the ambiguous nature of things was one that pretty much everyone felt as this show aired last year, but i can assure you such things do get somewhat cleared up in the eps immidiately following this one. didnt mention it earlier, but the kaiju in this ep is one who has appeared in one or two previous shows, but this ep really isnt a callback to a previous appearance in the way the cannan or garamon episodes are, so really its role couldve been filled with any creature like the red king parentss in Z ep 11 (if im remembering that correctly) and the plot wouldnt change.

    this episode was probably my least fav so far, not through any fault of it or anything, the previous episodes were just nebulously better i guess lol. this ep (and what looks to the the next two eps) was directed by one masayoshi takasue, the showrunner of 2018's R/B and 2022's decker. from my perspective at least, takasue excels in the human drama aspect of the ultra series, really making you feel for the one off cast while also giving good expansion to he main characters, something that is present throughout his episodes and indeed full shows. i do feel this comes at the sacrifice of the spectacle aspects; the character work is generally excellent but the kaiju action tends to lack comparitively. i know that the character work should take precidnet over semantics like how "epic the fight scene is" but cmon, its still a tokustsu superhero action show at the end of the day, the balance of the two should be taken into account ngl. a fun little things with the dub of this i ep i discovered like 10 minutes ago is how the shopkeeper lady's dub voice is the same VA who played the female lead in the controversial 4kids english dub of ultraman tiga back in 2002, which is crazy pull, but a welcome one nonetheless.

    • @henshininspection

      Interesting. I haven't given either R/B or Decker a fair shot, but it's good to know the character work is good :) I have watched a few episodes of 4Kids Taiga and I am not lying when I said the shopkeeper felt familiar, but I have watched A LOT of Yugioh and expect she was on either GX or YGO DM if she was on their Tiga dub. That's cool.

    oh my, was certainly noy expecting a full discussion on this lol. regardless, yes, agree with all said here. ultraseven as a whole is a show that, despite its more episodic approach, is very much character focused, be it the regular or one-off cast. you being able to instantly connect to furuhashi's plight without ever having seeing any of the show previously is a testiment to its longevity as a show. seven is a season that is one of the more highly regarded not just in ultra, but toku as a whole, really being the one true escapee of the "old show = bad show" mentality that is unfortunaly all-too-present in the online toku space. im glad you were not just able to appreciate the eps story in and of itself, but also see where the similarities to the blazar episode like the towers and the ultra having to face off with their controlled robotic comapnion for the kaiju fight scene. while blazar ep 6 / arc showrunner tsujimoto isnt the only modern director to do the whole lets do a throwback to an older episode thing, but he is regarded as best person who does it, combining the familiar of the source material with making it unique and fitting to the new show its being made for. forgot to mention it before, but in blazar 6, the dude from the gag of yasunobu running into someone coming into the launderette was blazar showrunner kiyotaka taguchi, literally everyone in the youtube premiere chat popped off when that bit happened.

      @@henshininspection in that case imma just put a few things up to episode 9 with my views on the show up to that point. this first stretch of blazar is one i greatly enjoy primarily for its character work. while each ep has solid storylines and equally solid action sequences, the characters are what make this part of the show stand out. their comradery is solidified as early as episode 4, which may seem too early for some people, but i say it leads to better episodes then what could have been if their dynamics werent set so early. fav ep so up to what youve discussed is, fittingly enough, ep 4; love the whole espionage thriller vibe to it, plus the kaiju is super cool, while also adding to the mysteries of the show in an organic way. really shows future-arc-showrunner takanori tsujimoto's range as a creative. one aspect id say the show kinda falters is in its first episode, more specifically how divorced it is from what the rest of the series is tonally and visually; for however good it is on its own (of which it is indeed very good) it doesnt do a good job of reflecting what the rest of the show is gonna be, which i know made a lot of people drop the show by the time of the fishing rod sequence in ep 2, feeling as though theyd been clickbaited by ep 1 into thinking the show was gonna be something it wasnt. there really isnt much context wise i can say about visual aspects to anything yet, aside from the ultraseven ep 24 connection with blazar 6. for the upcoming things tho, the kaiju in the follwing two eps, nijikagachi, shares a lot in common with the rainbow snakes of australian abariginal legend (the kaijus name itself even literally translating to "rainbow snake god"), may be worth a quick look up before covering them. episode 9 is one of my favs of the show by far, with it paying direct tribute to a two episode story from the original ultra q: episodes 13 and 16 (again can be found on tubi). would highly recommend checking those out before covering blazar 9, if only to make the impactful moments in it even more, well, impactful.

    AAAAAAAAAA HE'S BACK. very good to see you back at these again after all this time. it was great to hear your perspectives on ultra stuff way back when, so seeing your triumphant return has made my day. like i was doing back in the regulos days, ill be sure to sprinkle little bits and pieces of any external stuff that may aid in giving you a fuller experience of blazar, arc, or anything else you may cover in the future. since i dont wanna bog down this with a ton of disperate points about past episodes or stuff like rising, im just gonna suggest here that before alking about episode 6, it may be in your best interest to view the episode in which the alien cannans made their only other appearance: ultraseven episode 24 (which you can find on shout factory or tubi). I think itd be beneficial for you to see the similarities and differences between the two stories featuring them for your analysis. blazar as a whole isnt a show that prioritises references to the past, only doing so in 4 select episodes, but each pay great tribute to their source material while still mixing things up to create a cool individual story. one thing i will go a bit more into later on is particular creatives behind the season, but ill just draw attention to now that episodes 1 to 3 were directed by X, Orb, Z and Blazar showrunner kiyotaka taguchi, with eps 4 to 6 being done by Arc's showrunner takanori tsujimoto (who likewise directed the first three eps of that season).

    i echo pretty much all your sentiments about this series as a whole. the surface level stuff is superb, but the inconsistencies in the story as a whole scream "we're scrambling to figure something out from circumstances beyond our control", it seems i take with more of an issue with then yourself; the show's not awful at all, but I feel there are far better ultra series out there then Z. Of course it's admirable that they were able to put out the product they did and the fact it got pretty much universal acclaim is great to see. If anything, it certainly helped in getting a lot more people into ultraman from its accessibility, which is just a objective positive (shame toei legally can't do the same but thats a different can of worms). Either way, its been great to see your thoughts for a second time on this series, especially with regards to how they are similar or different to the fan consensus. unrelated note with regard to regulus, i dunno if you saw on the ultraman youtube account that another regulus thing has started airing. that one is only gonna be a two-parter that like 20 minutes in totala dn seems to have only been made coz they knew the first regulus thing was taking too long so made something else to go along with it. if you plan on giving that a look, it also has a dub fyi, i would highly recommend not looking at it til youve seen destined crossroad, as this new regulus special takes place right after it so you'll be a confused as to whats happening otherwise (not that you still wouldn't be confused anyway coz my god its one of the single most fan-service filled things the ultra series has ever put out; seriously you'll probably spent the entire thing going "umm, what? who? should i know about this thing? oh, that's definitely a spoiler for something.")

      @@henshininspection I always like bouncing back and forth with people about anything really, so its great to be able to so do with ultraman with you, even if its in the somewhat indirect way we do it lol. I did see episode 3 of kuuga up, i'm sure many around the world are rejoicing over having a third episode of a rider show up officially on youtube. that marcos video you brought up did delve into some of the legal stuff, specifically in regard to prospect, or lack-thereof, of a simulcast of the currently airing seasons due to their exclusivity deal with tv asahi meaning it won't happen, plus there's the simple fact that toei doesnt consider toku a priority since their animes already make them truckloads of cash so don't really need to distribute their toku overseas more then they do. the same day the video came out some big news dropped outta nowhere that rider and sentai's former producer was directly working on a plan to expand them more overseas, even though also on the same day, a series of tweets was made that, just in case i'm gonna keep this vague, really shouldn't have been made at all revealed some worrying and contradictory stuff about it. the marcos team has plans to do an update on the situation in some way in the follow up part to that video, which i can say with certainty coz i also work for marcosatsu; i was the writer of his latest video on adult tokus along with some others that have been released and will be in the future. also, dont you worry, i am very much prepared to blaze.

    I'm afraid to say my knowledge of the guyver doesnt extent past the two american live action movies. You bring this up in the ep 24 discussion as well, but it's a point I totally agree with: that a lot of the stuff they're introducing theme wise at the tail end of the show doesnt feel earned. Given the head writers sudden passing, it could be understandable to some degree, but they did manage to complete both the first episode and last few before then, leaving it up to the rest of the writing staff to fill the 20 or so episode void inbetween to male the ending that was already written make sense, but I dont feel as if it flowed and gelled as well as ot could have. Same could be said of the whole series imo; it felt like when I first watch this show when it was new that they just sorta went "oh right, the plot" and crammed most of it into the last 5 episodes without knowing how to properly tie ot in with what they had done previously. But yeah, considering the circumstances it's nice they were still able to pull through.

    oh my, ive been summoned. the general consensus on z is that its really really good, to many its one of the best ultra shows ever, if not of all time, then at least of the new generation era which began in 2013 with ginga. however, not to generalize too much, but i tend to see that latter opinion being held by relative newcomers primarily; people who have maybe seen a couple of the more recent seasons and not much else. long-term fans like myself seem to still acknowledge that there are definitely some fantastic aspects of it and enjoy what its consistent quality, but it usually isnt what theyd consider their favorite. this of course is moreso down to either nostalgia for older seasons or the fact theyve explored a bit deeper and have found something they loved where they didnt expect to find it. just speaking for myself, i certainly get why the show is so beloved, i mean winning best science fiction product of 2020 (where literally every piece of japanese sci-fi media was in the running) at the seiun awards has to count for something, but even within the modern era of the franchise i still think there are superior entries, namely X, Taiga and Orb; i find they balance out the main plotline with character dynamics and ties to the wider ultraman universe are handled better in all three (the fact all those shows don't just forget they have a main antagonist for eight episodes in a row like z does also helps). many people, generally those who havent seen much ultraman, tend to recommend z as a great starter season, which ive never really seen myself; i feel shows like X or Max are much better starting points for being fairly standard so you know what to expect from the rest of the franchise, while both also introducing elements from the past and the expanded universe in a more digestible way then i think Z does. **also thanks for checking out m blazar thoughts video lol

  • @cydrixar
    @cydrixar ปีที่แล้ว

    both this episode and the previous one really highlight tsujimoto's specific strengths as a director for the franchise, in how he handles elements from the past; honoring them while not compromising the overall story of an episode and how they should still focus equally on the current season's cast and plot. combined with his cool directorial choices and his consistently high quality output and you have who many long-time fans consider to be one of, if not the single strongest creative lead currently working within the franchise. i find it humorous how you unintentionally ended up titling this review what ultraman ace was originally meant to be called before some copyright mumbo jumbo caused the name to become ultraman ace later on. anyway, with regards to the translation of the term "terrible monster", don't worry, everyone is in unanimous agreement that name for yapool-created monsters sucks. in japanese the term is spoken as "choju", literally translating as "super beast", the way in which pretty much everyone has been calling them for decades coz it sounds more accurate and is just a better name overall, but recently tsuburaya has been doubling down on "terrible monster" being the official translation, which looks strange from the outset, but even after knowing that they were always meant to be referred to as such since their inception, what with the attack team from ace the TAC stranding for "terrible-monster attacking crew", it still just doesnt roll off the tongue, so noones gonna come at you for referring to them as choju or super beasts. that song you made reference to was ace's battle theme, not the opening, but both songs are equally solid imo.

    • @henshininspection
      @henshininspection ปีที่แล้ว

      That Ultra-Ace factoid is fun. Oh, and Ace's battle theme rocks! I'll look up a full version for fun. I was about to say "I didn't hear them say "Chouju" in the original" and then I remembered that this is the dub we're watching. Oops! I'm GLAD that I am not alone in rejecting the name. A couple things. 1. Is it "Chouju" as opposed to "Kaiju?" 2. I understand "chuo" to mean "super." Is the "ju" part of both words "beast?" If so what the heck does "kai" mean "big," "strange," "foreign," "altered?" 3. I'm sure I'm not the only one to say this, but it's too bad Ace's team wasn't called SAC, instead of TAC, since "super beast" is a better option. 4. If Yapool is essentially making "modified kaiju" do you think "kaizo kaiju" or "kaizju" could be a valid alternative to "chouju?" That's based on my understanding that SHOCKER made Hongo and his brethren into "kaizo ningen" or "modified humans"

    • @cydrixar
      @cydrixar ปีที่แล้ว

      @@henshininspection "chouju" specifically refers to the monsters created by yapool; ones from any other point of origin is referred to as a "kaiju". the "kai" part of "kaiju" literally means "strange", making the literal translation of the term "strange beast", the way of which it gets translated into just "monster" nowadays is a byproduct of when the term was used in the advertising for the original godzilla movie, but wasnt used as standard until the late 60s with the ultra series. you'll generally find a lot of early kaiju and toku media's character dialogue more often refers to the creatures as "kaibutsu", a.k.a "strange animal / creature", before "kaiju" became commonplace. the TAC thing is a shame of course, but i think it was moreso just the production crew trying to think of a cool-sounding english term to use, but of course for actual native speakers viewpoints its not exactly great, hence the avoidance of using it in the fanbase until it began cropping up again in all the recent official english sources. the yapool choju are pretty much just slapdash contraptions made as a means to an end, so having the term be "modified kaiju" could work, but in the context of the franchise they arent actually "existing kaiju modified by yapool". it is interesting you bring up the shocker comparison though; ace was a show that was more then a little influenced by the new-found success of the brand new kamen rider thing that was making waves as ace was in pre-production, with the main idea borrowed from it being a shocker-like main antagonist presence throughout the show, hence yapool being a thing, with the chojus acting as the evil cyborg equivalent in the same way. while overarching villains had shown up in the previous seasons, yapool was the first antagonist faction that showed up throughout the whole show.

    i think this episode really showcases the leo-ness this show is trying to emulate. leo was a season seeped in tragedy and overcoming life's hardships, and to see that element be incorperated into this was really cool to see; in some ways i think it does it better then leo, but in other ways leo handles it in a superior way imo (once again gonna throw a recommendation to check out leo at some point coz hoo boy is that show good). I think the action in this was the best in the show thus far too, really like the dynamics to it. it's interesting once again to see the perspective of someone who doesn't know whats coming since you havent seen the latest galaxy fight yet, coz everyone who has knows exactly where this is gonna end up leading to, so it'll be interesting to see your thoughts on how this connects to that, especially with the knowledge of how this series came out after destined crossroad released. from a mre not so great side of things though, and i know this is going to come off as ranty, but this episodes exemplified one of my biggest pet hates with koichi sakamoto's work: he endeavors to make the ultraman characters he introduced "the greatest and bestest most awesome ultramen in history", in subtle but clearly evident ways. with regulus here, he's being presented as so cool and great and a character you should like because he's so special he can control 2 styles of the strongest martial art in the universe instead of just one; the two that just so happened to be established to not work well together in previous episodes. not only that though, he's so great and amazing that he can also harness the powers of the other cosmo beast powers, can pierce armor based on the literal main antagonist of the whole showa-era universe and can relatively easily take down a choju (a type of synthetic kaiju made by another major antagonist in the overall franchise, consistently described as being "monsters beyond monsters") single handed. I wouldn't be so opposed to this if we would have had more time to regulus earning these feats, but right after he learns to control his emotions he's given all these, it all seems too rushed for the story they want to tell (which even then, for a special pinned as an origin story for this character has only ended up serving to give context to some lines from the latest ultra galaxy fight and not much else, while at the same time not answering the further questions this series has brought up like regulus' actual origin before he arrive on d60). This same thing i feel happened back when ultraman zero was introduced, single-handely obliterating an army of monsters to showcase how cool the new character is on a semantic level. don't get me wrong, yes, all these things obviously look cool, but under the surface i find that theres often times not enough there. i hate to single out sakamoto in this aspect, but every other main creative force on the ultra series who heads a show introducing a new ultraman don't do this. This also ties back to my point from a few eps ago, the tendency he has to make his new characters ones who have links to established characters as another means for the audience to like the new characters by association - though admittedly sakamoto isnt the only ultraman creative lead to do this, doesnt make it any less annoying when it happens in his work consistently. But yeah, maybe thats just me.

    Hi again. Thanks a lot for the shoutout, I always like to help out people who aren't as informed with this sort of thing so they can understand what's going on better, so I'm glad the context was of help. Also, dont worry, you can pronounce my username any way you like, I've heard it so many different ways over the years that now any pronunciation is correct. With regards to this episode, I feel this one solidified in my mind how there, perhaps unintentionally, is a consistent theme of sibling dynamics in this show. Maybe this was a byproduct of the show linking somewhat heavily with leo, who of course has a brother, but relationships like theirs are being explored with this. The phoros and tubahn dynamic; the main three magma's clear comradery, but with the cracks showing in desperate situations; even the brotherhood nature of the Cosmo beast fighters. I find that they're trying to go for a message of how no matter how different you and your siblings are, working together with them is the best way to go about things. In fact, I may go as far to say it condones being too similar to your siblings, as the magma trio are the out and out antagonists who all, personality , fighting style and end goal wise, are pretty much just one character separated into three. This may just be me trying to extrapolate theming that isnt there though.

    • @henshininspection

      I like that perspective on the sibling dynamics. Honestly I kinda forgot about big bro in the armor and I can see that it makes sense, since he and the other Magma bro are so similar. hey MJ. just gonna start out with saying that i've been listening to your coverage of ultra content since way back with the galaxy fight new gen heroes discussions and have really liked hearing your thoughts on all this content over the years and seeing all the things you pick up on the more and more you explore. Its always interesting to get the perspective of someone whose not as familiar as myself with this kinda thing express their opinions on these. i just thought i'd jump in and provide a bit of context for this series as to when it happens and what stuff leads up to it, without spoiling anything of course. so the character of regulos was one introduced in the previous ultra galaxy fight series, and this mini-series is pinned as an origin story for the character and giving context to the vague mentions of past events from the galaxy fight. for the series itself, it does but also doesn't directly tie into said galaxy fight, by which i mean that the events transpiring take place way back before leo's show from 1974 began timeline-wise, but due to things that happened in the previous galaxy fight, this show leads directly into that one, you'll see what i mean if you get round to checking out the new galaxy fight which is now up on youtube with a sub and dub. while primarily serving as an origin story for this new character, it also serves to expand a bit on things brought up in leo's show. for instance, the destruction of planet L77 was the inciting incident that started leo's season; astra's torture was also something brought up in supplementary materials made during leo's run, but this is the first time we are seeing it depicted on screen. from a stictly personal viewpoint, i've never really been a fan of how some new ultraman are introduced by giving them superficial ties to existing characters, even though said characters were never once hinted to have been a thing previously. to me, it just comes across as a superficial way to make the audience like the new characters quicker due to them being connected to already established ones and nothing more. same thing happened with zero back in the day and i felt the same way then. this may also be my leo bias showing, given its my favorite ultraman show bar none and highly recommend it, but i feel that the events being showcased here in relation to that series weren't ones we really needed to see, especially the astra torture scene, which i had always envisioned being something they would never show on screen due to the graphic nature depicted in the older written material, but now knowing what it actually looked like was pretty disappointing. anyway, thats enough of my rambling, hope you continue to enjoy the series, and indeed ultraman as a whole, as it continues to press forward.

    • @henshininspection
      @henshininspection ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for the comment. I'm glad you enjoy hearing my much less informed opinions on some of the Ultra series. I see your point about dovetailing new characters off the backs of established Ultras. I lack the context to balk at certain things like the torture example you brought up. I respect your distaste for how the tactic has been executed, but I see it as a shockingly bold move to fill in these spots of the timeline with characters and events that fully link the whole universe and timeline of most Ultras. I think that's cool. I have probably mentioned before during a Going Ultra that I want to orchestrate a sprawling interconnected Saga, but I want to do it really well. Since I like toku so much I plan to stand on the shoulders of these giants and honestly your explanation of what they are doing thrills my imagination. I will have to be careful to not disappoint my audience though. Wow. I want to say more, but I keep getting interrupted. I'd be happy to hear more from you later.
