Playing video games has been increasingly less fun. But complaining about video games has been a nice outlet.
Long(er) form reviews of games that have been out for several years. Fairly critical analysis that (hopefully) articulately delves into game design. Mostly, I repeat myself and yell about how games have become far too fast-paced and frantic.
Sweat beads down my ribcage when I play Overwatch and I don't even particularly like Overwatch.
Y-Wings are underappreciated.

Star Citizen's upcoming MFD Rework and New Displays
Whether it's bugs or unfinished design work, it's time to fix and fully feature Co-Pilot seats in Star Citizen. The only two features worth anything are missile operator mode and the power distribution triangle; and both of those are constantly broken in the Cutlass Black.
This video was originally to complement an issue council report. I'm praying these two features are fixed before the free flight - a free flight I'm hoping to re-introduce friends to SC with. Ain't nobody going to be impressed or entertained in these Co-Pilot seats as-is.
A list of bugs present in the Cutlass Black's co-pilot seat as of 3.23 and a list of missing features in all Co-Pilot seats.

Is Star Citizen ready, yet? Yes - in a way. Just don't expect it to be easy. Sea of Thieves is Star Citizen's most immediate parallel - they both offer parties of players similar adventures. If you're curious how MechWarrior Online's Community Warfare developed over the last nine years: it really hasn't. It failed to fully realize the inspiration behind it's game mode and the imagination achieved by other studios. A lot of the ground work was there at release it's a shame it hasn't really developed into much. With MechWarrior 5's release and subsequent investments, however, the ass...

Like Throwing Lego Sets At the Wall, Repeatedly
I’ve been a long-time Battlefield fan, and while I didn’t play much Battlefield 2, I agree that its design philosophy represented the series at its peak. Unfortunately, many forget that Battlefield has evolved into something else entirely. Modes that feel unnecessary, like the Metro and Locker grinds, and a shift toward twitch based gameplay, now dominate. It seems like Battlefield has shifted to cater more to the traditional Call of Duty crowd, who may actually outnumber the original fanbase. As a result, each new Battlefield installment is caught trying to satisfy both groups the fans of mindless, fast paced action and the fans of strategic, large scale Conquest gameplay. This push to appeal to both sides inevitably leads to compromises that sacrifice the series original restraint and tactical depth. So I don’t have much hope for BF6.
Three years have passed since this review and the game is STILL the same. All that changes is adding more mechs that they can sell. The game itself is stagnant. The MWO forums are full of cheerleaders for the game because descent is not tolerated by the moderators. I logon every year or so and see if the game is any better only to be sorely disappointed again. Guess its time to give up on hope.
😢
All the DLC except Inner Sphere should be $2.99 for what they bring to the table, most of these are on par with Oblivion Horse Armor shit. They have continued this DLC milking bs with MW5 Clans, one would think they are a subsidiary of EA with these business practices. Bad habit they picked up from their MWO days I guess...
Man watching this video has just made me sad because there will never be anything like this as long as they are still making money from MWO
"You're not really going to find highlight clips in youtube of someone winning a 1 vs 4 in mechwarior online" Had to stop watching after this. Check my my vids, I've done this often and most times in a light. th-cam.com/video/sLRx9eiT6fM/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=AirVengeance
I am still of the opinion bf3 is a marvel of modern art design. It is so inciting and emotional it’s truly amazing to look at and experience
As someone who started with bf2142 and 2, every other battlefield after those two are just BF in name only. Agree with everything in the video.
My favorite was Mech commander 2
After watching the latest piece of turd of a gameplay from SC, it boggles the mind how no one in their large company figured out that in the future maybe systems will be more automated than today's ones... turrets manned by people is stupid. The whole project is a scam so it is understandable why they are dumb to think properly and implement things that would be more simple from design and technical perspective but also faster to implement.
I really, really tried to like this game, but pretty much everything it tries to do, a previous game does better, the mechanics are mostly there, it's not nearly as deep mechanically as the previous ones, I can accept that, but the AI is stupid, the procedural generation is worthless, cool idea to pretend to have the whole inner sphere, but come on, every planet looks the same, the story is beyond bland, I get it, it's mercs, it's supposed to be a bit more open ended, but HBS's game did a better job at that, and the Succession Wars...yet again? MechWarrior 1 did it, 2018 did it, there's more about that era of Battletech than probably any other.
One memorable match I had was in that swamp map.. I had gotten distracted and the game had been running for a good 15 minutes.. There were 4 enemies left and 2 friendlies still in the field while my pristine catipult was still sitting at the spawn point. They had all been through the ringer before I got there.. like shooting fish in a barrel.
oh your a cappellan! no wonder i hate your entire take. you are a space north korean
Pirahna Games doesn't feel like they are ambitious enough for this branding. Going from MW3 years ago to MW5: Clans, I'm kind of disappointed by how odd the scaling feels. Everything feels like I'm controlling an RC toy. The AI is bizarre too. They did nothing to make the friendly AI competent at all.
Waaaaaaait, wait, wait, thats not fair. Ghost Ship made a fully interactive 3d lobby in DRG that works like a charm, and theyre a tiny studio. That was just lazy on PGI's part. They shouldve either DONE something with it, or scrap it in favor of 2d altogether. As it is right now, its just an annoyance having to move up to Rihanna from the bottom floor ever darn time. (Yes, ima story mode enjoyer.)
tbh the frostbite era battlefields never rlly impressed me in technical awe or in its large scale depiction and handing of a simulated battle. it didnt feel any different to me to what i'd find in an average halo big team battle match or smth to cod too in a smaller scale. but thats coming from a zoomey zoom who got a whiff of bf1 before dropping it in and moving onto the next flavor of the month, but it had its moments over me. maybe it was the heavy weapon meta i disliked, the feeling of isloated gun fights between the enemy that felt small in scale instead of the large total war like scenarios i was expecting, i'll never know.
bro I love you so much
the current arrangement are better for high-speed escort, maybe interception. if only this game follow naval logic that bigger ship go faster
The Mercenaries soundtrack is one of my favorite OST's for some reason, l just really got into it. I even had that thing on my phone and listened to it while I walked a few miles to/from work lol.
Used to hop on with my dad, uncle, and cousin
Had a laugh at the mod segment. As I kind of understand the sentiment since jumping into this game last week; Absolutely love MW5 now, but only because through the week, I found and setup a mix of mods that suited my very personal preference. Without them, I don't think this game could have stayed on my storage drive for a day.
Pronouncing GIF the wrong way made me click off
Choosy developers
This video completely shocks me I have been playing Battletech since Mechwarrior 1. Mechwarrior 5 Mercenaries is hands down the best gameplay and storyline campaigns. the random missions are a bit less so but that's to be expected as they don't have voice overs or cutscenes but it's also a sandbox co-op. There is absolulty nothing wrong with the graphics or rendering. Also you have the ability to paint them. Simply put this is the best mechwarrior game I have ever played and I have played everyone I can find. I cannot see how anyone can think that that trash of a game (Mechwarrior online) is in anyway better to this Gem. There has never been a more immersive battletech game. Yet you spend over an hour complaining about a game you clearly haven't played. Do you even like Battletech or do you just bash entire franchizes just to get views. This is click bait and I am reporting it as such.
I've never played this, but if they don't already do it, maybe they could implement a cap on total team tonnage. This way you're not facing a majority team of assault, heavies, or mediums. The problem would be, when teammates argue over who gets what allowance. Larger, and more diversity in maps would be nice. Melee, and death from above, including self destruction kamikaze would be nice. Ejection, and attempted mech takeovers, or sabotaging would be wild. Deployment of munitions drops, would be nice. Deployment of repair capabilities, could be beneficial, but also an badly abused system. Better warning systems definitely needed. With much larger maps, could maybe allow strategic selectable drop zones.
Hold on, the way FTL communication works in the Battletech universe, it should sound like an audio file, because it would literally BE an audio/video file. It's not transmitting the sound, it just transmits data. It should sound like "raw recording footage" because it literally IS. That's like saying a song you download from the Internet should be distorted because it's being transmitted from the other side of the planet.
I noticed that you never talked about the console side, as I play MW5 on the series. You make it sound like that the game is not worth playing unless you get the DLC which consoles can not get
"MFD side buttons broken" - 🥱 me, having 23 binds on my left joystick
Engine choice doomed its development.
Its a shame to see this a Year old and MWO be the same
Pretty sure I lost every game of faction play I tried, like horrifically, never had a good match, was always killed by far better players than me without contributing anything useful. I think you'd get like 3 mechs, and if you died you respawned? My teams would all die 12v0, do that three times in a row. At least in quick play when you get a lopsided match up it's over quickly.
And I like this game because of this (lack of) development. I feel like even after 10 Years I can still lock in and still have the same experience. The only things I don't like are things they added because of balancing like Ghost heat, tonnage, player group restrictions , skill based matchmaking and melee attacks . And I miss those times were I could choose to play skirmish only, cause I never liked any of the other game mods.
11 years and nothing has changed in the slightest… I have fully lost hope in MWO getting any kind of noticeable improvement
I say this as a fan of the BT IP as a whole, and MechWarrior specifically: one of the biggest issues, imo, is the fact that frankly, the series has only so much variety. The weapons and even the secondary equipment are largely stuck as they have been for decades, and the gearing (or rather new gear being released) for live service action games is one of the things that keeps them alive. So one of the things that appeals about live service games, constant new ways to play, simply don't exist. They can't invent new weapons that aren't in TT rulesets. Also, thank you for being someone speaking positively on behalf of the hardpoint/mech design system. I hate the old school "tonnage is tonnage" MW rules, it made mech selection so lame. It was essentially "just pick your favorite skin".
Okay follow up comment - the second music clip you featured from mw3 also was pretty much ripped from a track from the mw2 soundtrack. I get the impression you've never listened to it. And the rock track you said was better sounded like it came straight off a rammstein album. Which is nu metal, not butt rock.
So the music you featured from mw4 actually sounds VERY close to one of the tracks from the mw2 base game soundtrack, like to the point that I think they basically stole it and remixed it. Also, the music you are calling 'butt rock' is not butt rock. Butt rock is actually sort of like a cross between classic rock and 2000s alternative rock. The music you're complaining about is basically nu metal without vocals, and honestly, I do think 'heavy metal' quite literally *suits* this game and universe. I think the ambient creepy electric music works as well for suspense and tension, but even if you look at halo/halo 2, extremely popular game soundtracks, they are a mixture of the two - the ambient industrial, and rock/metal riffage. It's a futuristic action game, it comes with the male bravado territory. That all said, loving the video!
We’re 8 v 8 again!
It's trash now
I discovered you recently through your MW videos, and I really enjoy and appreciate them. You communicate very clearly and explain things well. Thanks. When I was a kid (I'm 30 now), discovering MW4 Mercs through the incredible confusing, convoluted (for me, anyway) free release was a huge moment. It's how I discovered that the Battletech franchise even existed. MW4 Mercs is one of my favorite games ever. I hope we get Mechwarrior stuff approaching that level of detail and quality again. It was made with a lot of love and care. Your videos on MW definitively describe the state of the series. I guess I'll have to get the Battletech game you talked about in this video, you make it sound really cool!
Play all the games! I think Battletech is a wonderful and higher quality introduction into the setting. I'm 32, had been playing these games since I was 6, and didn't fully understand the setting until Battletech.
@birthdaytruck Thanks man. Appreciate you.
So much of what is said in this video really sums up the BF3, BF4, and later titles comparison to BF2 and 2142. Particularly the statements about no "rest" period. I don't have the "always on" quick reactions and visual acuity that is required for the modern BF (and COD) titles. Much the same could be said for the original COD online games as well, which is why I only played a couple of times. I very much enjoyed 2 and 2142 (even though I was never that good at them), so much that I recently installed them again.
Me playing on the Xbox… I wish I could download some of these mods
A lot of them don't work anymore.
The problem is, you spent the first 30 minutes talking about the merits of the story and world building, but the story in Battletech just isn't interesting in general. I'm not here for the story of how or the merits of how well the game expands of the battletech setting because battletech as a setting fails to be an interesting space drama. It's like game of thrones but without the interesting characters. I'm just here to shoot big stompy mechs.
All of this is sadly still relevant, except that they have actually REMOVED gamemodes. I think they know they've made their money and they're just milking it. Who know when we'll get another multi-player mechwarrior game. I found MW5 boring and uninspired. Oh well.
Dude I'm sorry I agree with tex talks BattleTech living legends is way better piloting a mech should not be a twitch shooter
I have never heard the term "twitch shooter" before, but after a quick google search to try and understand the term I think I disagree, not that mwll is better, but I don't think mwo is a twitch shooter, It is much slower paced then a LOT of other fps games out there, and I feel like mwll is actually too slow paced at times, but I think I would agree that mwo is a bit too fast sometimes for a mechwarrior title, and I think a in between might be nice, I like a lot of things about mwll more and I would prefer it if not for the lack of a mechlab, the very limited playerbase, and the much smaller competitive scene.
...but I also agree with Tex. I don't want MWO to be a twitch shooter. Where did you quote me on that sentiment?
ok, here's why we don't have mech falling. it USE to exist in MWO but they removed it cause it just caused players to take the weapons that have the highest chance of knock down. If the unit can't fight back it's basically a free kill, and players DON'T LIKE CONTROL TAKEN AWAY FROM THEM. almost any game that do stuff like that, such as overwatch Mei or Destiny 2 stasis, is met with EXTREAM frustration and outrage.
"Fallout 4 tells a good story" Okay, look, MW5's story is terrible, but that does not make F4 good, man.
You forgot that I made the parallel between "not caring about Mason's dad" and "not caring about Fallout 4's kid". Fallout 4 told a better story than MW5. It's still a relatively boring story, but it was better than MW5.
@@birthdaytruck No, I didn't forget. That's still a poor take, is all, though in part one could argue it's from expectation. Both bad stories regardless.
If they took the MWO soundtrack, kept it reserved for small scale battles in the setting of solaris gladiatorial fights, i think it could honestly enhance that. As it stands, i have never allowed my MWO music volume over 0%
I really don't agree with a lot of praise videos like this give HBS's Battletech. What character development? The characters are the same from start to finish. What investment? Our mentor dies after knowing him for 1 mission. And then the game tries to re-create that exact same sense of loss, with the *same character* less than an hour later. Player choice during the plot changes nothing, and choices during travel events have extremely negligible repercussions. When the answer to anything is "you can fix it with mods", you're in the exact same boat as MW5 and your argument becomes shallow. I enjoy Battletech, but I hate seeing people hold it up on a pedestal when it was also a pretty flawed title.
Yes - but it was absolutely better than what the MechWarrior titles have given us.
I'm really glad that I found this review. I thought I was the only one that found this game mediocre absolute best, and somehow associating the effort of the community trying to polish this third as the game originally being good. The only thing that makes this game somewhat okay is the hard work of the dedicated community, not the developers
Glad this video popped up for me, it encapsulates all the issues I've had with the game that I've experienced over the years. Though, you won't see me saying no to a 48v48 massive map battle with NPCs and a ton of objectives to do. I think it'd help in situations where the murderball is is murderballing to have a 'Surrender' mechanic that you vote on -- THEN the dropships show up and start picking you up. Well, y'know what they say about wishful thinking.
Dice needs to remaster BF2, all they need to do is polish the graphics, sounds, animations, sounds and hit boxes, while preserving all the mechanics. What strikes above the newer battlefields, are the vehicles. Each vehicle had a place, like an ecosystem, that ecosystem got removed in the later battlefields. DICE and EA just wanted to pursue COD, and that's what we saw in the Frost Bite games. Also the BF2 Lore was dope, including the unique MEC and how each weapon was exclusive to the factions.
Faction specific weaponry (aside from unlocks) made each team feel a little more unique. I was never a fan of "everyone gets everything" but, hey, you gotta make players grind for something. A BF2 remaster: ASSUMING THEY KEEP TRUE TO THE DESIGN PILLARS, HERE, would be an easy community win post 2042.
might just have to reboot the game entirely, one of the major issues is that the games on Cry Engine 3, which is very undersupported engine series generally from what staff have said. The hope for me would be to just have MWO2 spin off from the MW5 Unreal spur, you can potentially port all the same models up the new engine pipeline. Honestly though people are mega critical of MWO but like, how many 11 year old 100% online games are still up?
MW5 is in unreal: I imagine some of the work has been done to move MWO over and/or PGI is somewhat familiar. A reboot isn't necessary but an engine switch might be beneficial. I want MWO, MW5, and the franchise to be great and I remain critical in the hopes of helping propel it up there.
@@birthdaytruck IIRC, Tiyos has stated that there is a followup in the works, but it is not MWO2.
