Bayo Akomolafe | A Prior Generosity | Glasgow, Scotland March 2024
Bayo Akomolafe in Glasgow, Scotland on the 29th of March 2024, hosted by the Centre for Human Ecology, Galgael and Enough Scotland.
Bayo Akomolafe is a philosopher, writer, activist, professor of psychology, and executive director of the Emergence Network. He has been appointed Scots Philosophical Society Centenary Fellow at the University of Dundee, His work on 'postactivism' has long been of interest to some of us here at CHE, and we were delighted to host this exclusive Glasgow gathering with him.
A Prior Generosity
In this talk, Dr. Bayo Akomolafe addresses what he terms "white stability", a matrix of dots, an orthodoxy of the apparent, which obscures the meandering lines of relational connections that entangle bodies with their contexts. Most importantly, he speaks about a "prior generosity", a 'fungal' network of gifts and possibilities and energies we have always been part of, but which modernity instrumentalises as scarcity.

What a great encouragement Dougald. Soil and Soul was also a major inspiration to me, in my work on the Wild Coast of South Africa to support an indigenous community to stop a scheme to mine the ancestral lands of the AmaMpondo people for titanium. Next time you speak to Alastair and Verene ask them to tell you about how they helped me. We followed the same strategy of Naming, Unmasking and Engaging to Powers. It worked. Can't wait to read your book. 😊

Hi Iain, great to see you discussing human ecology. The study trip with you in 2011 was hugely transformative for me also. Great research discussion. Melissa

Hello Melissa. I have happy memories of our tour together, and the presentations that yourself and Maria Latumahina gave at Sabhal Mor Ostaig when we talked about peoples of the land and sea. You both opened people's hearts as well as their minds and it led to such rich discussion afterwards.
