Hello I'm John. I'm here to document my life and explore my creativity in the process.
The Beauty of Everyday Moments in Osaka
Scenes from Osaka which I captured from last year when I stayed in the city for a few months. Didn't want to let these sit on the hard-drive so I thought it would be best to make something out of it.
Only equipped with the Fujifilm XT-4 and the Fujifilm 33mm 1.4, I wandered the streets most days capturing the small moments and the scenes around me.

Shooting Cinestill 800T in Osaka (POV)
มุมมอง 1.6Kปีที่แล้ว
Going back to November in 2023 where I walked around Osaka in the evening with a roll of Cinestill 800T loaded in my beloved Contax T2. Apologies in advance for the jittery pov footage, I was devastated to see after recording how poorly the DJI action 2 handles in low light. But alas I wish to share these moments with you, so I hope you can enjoy this video regardless. Maybe one day I'll be abl...

In today's video, I'll be shooting a roll of HP5 400 Plus with the Contax T2 and pushing it an extra stop. I shot around Umeda in Osaka on a beautifully moody day, perfect for some black and white street snaps. As always appreciate those that stop by and support the channel. My Minimal Photography Kit for Street/Travel All in One Sling
มุมมอง 2.9Kปีที่แล้ว
Hello everyone, today I'll be briefly glazing over the contents of my travel/edc/street photography bag. Now with the upcoming trip to Japan I wanted to pack something minimal and compact but still provide the necessary tools for me to capture the streets. As awkward and somewhat daunting of sitting in front of the camera for the first time on this channel I hope you all could get some insight ...
for a budget setup...very well done. From what I understand a full frame camera would be better...but that is another price category
@@jimf5160 Thank you very much. I’m glad you like the setup. For its price point it gets the job done. A full frame would be beneficial but as I already own the Fuji XT4 I decided to use the kit I already own. Maybe in the future I’d get into full frame or even medium format
Nice shots 👍🏻
Thank you very much. Glad you like them
Nice capture Johnny! Hey any idea what games the gents were playing in that game room in Shinsekai?
Thank you very much. From what I believe there's a few games being played. One of them is Shogi but I'm not too sure on the rest. But I always walk past in the area to grab a shot. You can see the same customers always, so that's pretty wholesome
@@john.vanzijlawesome I’ll have to look that up, I also snapped a photo as I walked by, pretty cool scene in that room. Keep up the good work!
What is the image resolution of your 35mm (1.5" x 1.0") scans in pixels per inch?
Each image is roughly 4900 x 3200 resolution. I do crop out the edges as it has some of the framing from the film holder. And this is with my Fuji XT4, if you have a full frame or medium format I'm sure the quality will be even better. But I've not had any problems with my setup. Upon inspection, I can see each image has a DPI roughly of 72 per inch. Let me know if there's anything else you need to know
Just the video I needed to see after a full day of Japanese studying. Thank you for keeping me motivated :)
Thanks Anita. Even if I can make one person inspired or motivated, I have done my job. Good luck with the studies, you've been doing an amazing job and it's definitely something I should be working on harder haha
That was beautiful ❤
So glad you liked it Ren
Ooooo so good bro 😎 So emotional
Arigatou Shohei! Next one might be in Fukuoka 😉
Extremely high quality video for such a underrated channel. I love this style of content so much
Amazing video footage! Can you please make a video on how to shoot video on the x100vi 😍
@@cyrxs7 Thank you very much really glad you like it. For such a small camera it’s great that I can still shoot Log footage. At some stage I might make a video on how I shoot with the X100VI. Anything in particular you want me to cover?
@@john.vanzijl would love to see the settings and gears you use! Eventually your editing process 😍 this would help a lot of beginners out there like myself.
@@cyrxs7 That's great. Thanks for the feedback. Gives me some ideas on what I can cover on the camera as well as the editing process. Mostly been using Dehancer for Davinci Resolve for the colour grading process which I briefly covered in my "film-look video". But I can go more over that soon enough.
Hello brother, really amazing clips can you send the log footages of this video? I just want to use it for color grading as a practise. These clips really hooked me and they are also shot with some amazing angles
intro feels just like the start of a nostalgic film bro, I love it ❤
Ah thank you Kota. Happy to hear it. I was trying to find a fitting song for the Summer vibes and thought this one came out nicely ✨
Beautiful footage man! So refreshing to see something else than overcrowded Tokyo city center. Also love the song choice ✨
@@lourannier9082 Really glad you think so. This was taken just outside of Osaka. A local area west of the city. I think I was the only foreigner there to see the fireworks haha. Also glad you like the music, I was stuck for choices when going through Epidemic Sound
So good 😎 I like old TV Frames :)
@@sekky3379 Whenever we get to see each other again. Let’s make a video together ✨
@@john.vanzijl of course:) let’s catch up soon ✌️
So organic and appeasing 🙂
@@GabrielAndre Very happy to hear it. I’m loving the 4:3 ratio. Something about it is so good. A sense of nostalgia I suppose?
@@john.vanzijl would be awesome to watch on a TV with that ratio actually.
@@GabrielAndre Take us back to the days with boxy TV’s that weight a ton 😂
@@john.vanzijl they do weigh a ton don't they 😂
Nice video Johnny, very informative. Thanks!
@@BS-bc7gu Ah thank you. Too kind. Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video! Thanks for explaining the process cuz I've been thinking of getting into film photography :D
@@connorchoong4744 Happy to hear it! It’s definitely not a cheap hobby to get into, but I just say it’s very enjoyable. Wishing you luck on your film journey.

Really great work. I’m interested in dehancer 🤔
Thank you Shohei. Dehancer is great! A little pricey but if you’ve got the money I can recommend. But I’d highly recommend using the trial first to make sure you like the plug-in and see if it also runs on your pc well enough. Also let’s make a video together when I get back to Japan sometime! Would be fun!
@@john.vanzijl I see:) I’m gonna do trial first😊 Of course bro. Let’s make videos together :)
Really impressive results here. I only have mp4 footage so have a tough time grading any kind of look. Pretty happy with my recent vid but then you look at this and it doesn’t compare haha
Thank you mate. Glad you like the results of the colour grading. Had a quick glimpse at your latest video and I say the grading is still nice. Overall very natural yet it has a nostalgic feeling. I look forward to seeing what else you'll put out. Your style of videos is nice and calming to watch.
@@john.vanzijl Oh crazy, thanks for checking it out, that's very kind of you to say :)
@@oddgog Of course. It’s always good to see others creating from around the world.

@@ggramsamyAh thank you GG. I’m glad you like it! Took me a solid few days to nail this video 😆🙏🏼
@@john.vanzijl I can imagine! Turned out amazing tho!
@@ggramsamy Thank you. I’m glad to hear it. I look forward to using the plug-in more for future videos too. Definitely given me some extra motivation!
hey! you mentioned that you reduced the shutter speed to around 1/30. how to do it on the Contax t2 camera exactly? to set up aperture to F5.6 or somehow else? cool video and photos btw :)
Hey there. Yes you would be correct, in order to get a lower shutter speed you want to set the shutter speed to a higher number. 5.6 I found to be a good spot for a cloudy day like this. Really depends on the weather and lighting. If it’s sunny you may need to go to f/8 or even f11-f/16.
@@john.vanzijl got it. thanks!
@@veranikaisakova1812 Happy to help!
It looks like the problem on the DJI is the stabilisation; it's warping the footage really badly. The actual low light performance isn't that bad for a small sensor.
Appreciate the information of the stabilisation. I've only had the camera for a short period of time so I've yet to fully test it out. I was disappointed to see the shaky footage but hopefully I can play around with it more to minimise the issues. Perhaps no stabilisation and do it myself in post?
Shooting cinestill in Japan must be a dream with all the beautiful lighting shapes and types at night. Great photos, love the shot at 2:11! I’ve been paying more attention to geometry in photographs recently and love the contrast of the circles against the rectangular signs
You'll be an expert by the time you go to Japan haha. It sure is heaven for photographers both in film or digital. This was my fifth visit to Japan and I've yet to tire from it. There's so much to explore and capture. Cinestill 800T is definitely one of my favourite stocks to use at night, there's just so many lights in the city. You'll be bound to capture that beautiful halation.
Ugh I miss it 😫🥲
Time to book the next annual trip to Japan hehe
Love the POV shots of you filming, feels like I am the one taking the photos haha. Can't wait to be back in Osaka, and some new places when I go back to Japan this year. Cannot wait! Thanks for posting footage from Japan, gives me so much joy to watch :)
I'm glad you enjoyed the footage. Shame about the jitteriness of the low light footage, but perhaps I'll upgrade one day to make it more watchable haha. I look forward to seeing more photos from your Japan trip, especially on film if you decide to take it with you again.
This was great! I really think you got some great pictures!
Thank you very much for watching. I'm glad you like some of the images
🙏🏼

I have no idea who you are but I was recommended this and I wanna get into this now
Haha go for it! Enjoy the journey Appreciate you for clicking onto this video too.
what did u shoot these on? Great video mate 👊
Thanks a lot Hmuz. Shot all the clips with my Fujifilm XT4 and the 23mm f2. All of the Cinestill 800T shots were from the Contax T2 and all the Kodak Eastman Double-X shots were on the Olympus XA.
the batteries in the film cameras didn't die on u cause of the cold? @@john.vanzijl
The music in the video - wow oh wow! Not to mention all the footage! It's all amazing, well done !!!
Thank you Anita. I got the music from Epidemic Sound. I also used some of his music in my previous video. And yes I absolutely adored Sapporo, I was very happy with the footage I managed to record. Not to mention, the snowy conditions were a blessing.

Very calming video! Loved the shot at 2:15
Apologies about the late reply, didn't see this comment. I'm glad you like that shot. The red clothing definitely added that extra pop of colour to the scene.
Sugoiii✨🤩🍁
Idk why but those kind of videos grab my attention so much. I liked your video! Sometimes I see good subjects to photograph but I don't want to intimidate the people. I'd like to be more comfortable with my camera when I'm surrounded by people. Did you use a go pro to shoot this video ? That was really nice !
I also know what you mean. I love watching these kind of videos so that’s why I thought I’d do something similar. Also I agree. So many times I find a subject I want to shoot but find myself holding back in order to not change the mood of a person. Lastly this was recorded with the DJI Action 2. I just record at 1080p 24 and it does the job nicely for some short clips.
Mhmm some neat shots there!🤌🏼✨
Many thanks Teo. I can’t wait to go home and scan them myself
Very relaxing! Made me wanna go to tsukiji and try that burger haha
I gotta thank Paolo for making a video covering Tsukiji. Otherwise I would have never known about it 😂
I got the shot ✅
Hope to see it posted on IG sometime 😉
