I feel like Amethar’s shortcomings as a king was because he was fifth in line, nobody (especially not him) could predict him taking the throne until once the Ravening War was over, and all of his sisters were killed. So Amethar was raised under the expectation that he’ll never become king. And he believes himself to be the runt of the litter, the dumbest and least capable of his siblings. General Rococoa was a talented military leader, murdered for knowing too much. Princess Sapphira was a diplomat, but her calls for peace were forever silenced. Archmage Lazuli was the true love of Queen Caramelinda, the woman who Amethar was expected to marry and father the children of after the war, and a very intelligent and powerful wizard, who gave her life to win a battle. And Saint Citrina was a beloved religious leader who made a book that compelled those who touched it to tell the truth, but was viciously murdered by the cowardly future Pontifex. Amethar? Nothing was expected out of him, and when the war ended, due to him having the favour of the dice gods, he was crowned King of Candia. But he was a winner by default, with his crown weighing heavily, as he believes that his sisters each would be ten times the monarch he ever could be. His inability to escape his late sisters’ shadows weighs heavily on his heart and his reign.

This song is perfect for this season. Like it might as well have been written for it.
