Finding your voice: the story behind Be Bold Bob
Author Jane Porter and illustrator Jenni Desmond chat about their new book together, Be Bold Bob (Walker Books/Candlewick Press). Buy the book here: uk.bookshop.org/p/books/be-bold-bob-jane-porter/7752509?aid=1903&ean=9781529516272&
Bob is a small, shy elephant who longs to sing in public, but gets struck with stage fright every time he tries. He meets a ukelele-playing pangolin who tells him a very important secret: Nobody minds if you get it wrong.
In the video, Jane talks about how she was a very shy child who gradually overcame her fears, and reveals how she learned to play the fiddle later in life and eventually found the confidence to perform in front of an audience at Blazin' in Beauly fiddle week. You'll get a glimpse of the very first draft of the story, where Bob was not even an elephant but a pig, and Jenni shows her first sketches for Bob as well as her roughs and colour planning.
You'll also hear how Jenni did research in the Palm House at Kew Gardens with steam dripping onto her sketchbook, and you'll find out why there's a frog with a cast on his leg and a monkey with a hearing aid in the book.

Time travel to Ancient Egypt: a book for the British Library
มุมมอง 2306 หลายเดือนก่อน
I made this book for the British Library's Learning team. The brief was for a hand-made book, involving time travel, Ancient Egypt, an envelope you can open, as well as doors and flaps. I love this kind of brief! I hope you enjoy the result, and that it inspires you to make one of your own. You can access all the British Library's 'Journeys' activities for schools here: padlet.com/discovering_c...

A chat with illustrator Neil Clark about all things frog, to celebrate the launch of our new funny non-fiction picture book, 'So You Want To Be A Frog'. My illustration process
มุมมอง 8022 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video you can watch me experimenting with an idea for a new story, using a light box, and trying out the new paints to create a cosy scene. I'm trying something new - working with matte acrylic paints (Flashe paints from LeFranc Bourgeois). It was a useful process and I learned a lot - but I'd like the results to be looser. And I wish I hadn't got carried away with collage... I made thi...

Will start for sure looks like fun
Perfect timing, start with the new year! Good luck with your diary :)
Ahhh...hearing you say that the most boring things make the best comics was really wonderful. I would like to try my hand at something like this, and I love graphic novels!
Ah that's nice to hear! You should definitely have a go - if you want some weekly encouragement, you could always join my online class - starts Jan 15th!
Such a good artist but also, I apologize saying this but she's so sweet and pretty. I think I'm in love :)
Thanks for sharing, this was such a lovely video♥ I've attempted Hourly Comics Day a couple of times, but never thought to keep a comic diary. I'm currently trying to develop my illustration skills, and only recently started drawing with ink pens, but i'm looking for a regular creative habit to help soothe my daily stresses. I like the idea of a diary format because it can evolve over time, even if I don't share it. The last few years have been really difficult and I think it could be very helpful to have a visual record to look back on when things are all too much. Thank you for sharing your approach.
So glad you enjoyed it - and that you are finding making comics a good way to soothe stresses in difficult times. I find it ENORMOUSLY therapeutic - have been going nearly ten years now!
I've done my first zines, and it's my new obsession. 😅
ha ha I should have put a warning about that! Definitely a case of once you've made one, you can't stop... have fun with them!
😊 WASHINGTON D.C. every possible Art Museums....
Your diary is lovely, and your drawings are good. Lively. This is a great idea.
Thankyou Linda!
Just a comment on labelling. Your front cover will depend on your folding. Mine is actually in the middle. Someone else on youtube seems to have it in the end. (The two halves on top of each other). Could I just recommend, if you are hapoy with how it's folded and looking, label and number bookket whilst it is folded. Play with it a bit.
Good advice, thanks Linda!
Brilliant 🤩
I can’t wait to join you.
Looking forward to having you in the class Gloria!
Do you do mini comic swap? Please let me Know thanks Tyler j
Great process! I'm mostly a gouache painter, but i also love acryl gouache, so maybe i was considering trying these. I like this illustration, that allow to see the potential of the flashe painting.
Thankyou - I'm really glad you enjoyed it! I must do more Flashe painting, they are a great medium to use...
I love this!!!!!

I’ve got my second graders (USA) making zines this year as learning/reviewing tools. We’re all learning a lot! And, having fun doing it! This is very inspiring. Thank you! ❤
That's fantastic to hear - thankyou so much! I am really glad your second graders have found the video inspiring!
This was incredibly inspiring and very informative 😊. I just found your channel tonight (and subscribed)as I was looking for zine ideas. I’m looking forward to working along with your many other videos/projects. Thanks a million 😊
Aw thankyou so much Tiffany, that's great to hear! If you're interested in joining my live online comics class, there's a new term starting in January :) www.janeporter.co.uk/comics/online-comics-class-with-jane-porter
Hi Jane! Greetings from Guarulhos Brazil! Thanks so much for sharing your comic diary, I never thought that we could diarying using this format! Thanks again!@ 😊
Wow how exciting that you are watching this in Brazil! Really glad you enjoyed it and I hope it has inspired you! :)
I'm in love with this whole concept - I'm not an artist at all but would love to start one now. And I just wanted to say I could watch a video every day of you just flipping through them and narrating a bit just as you did. Your voice is super soothing and helped me on a rough day. Thanks!
What a lovely comment, that has made my day! And you should definitely start your own diary, there is no need to be an artist - it's just about finding your own way to record all those quirky things that make up day-to-day life. I'm planning to start a beginner-level comics class in January, join my free newsletter here if you'd like to keep in touch! janeporter.substack.com/about

Discovery of the day.... Thank you for inspiration and the calmness in your video. And for me as somebody from Germany it is such a relief to once have the possibility to listen quietly because you speak slowly. Thank you for that and also that there is no music non stop in the background. Perfect. ❤
Thankyou so much! That is lovely feedback to get - I have had to train myself to talk more slowly!
I took Emily's class as well! But sadly it didn't make me start a regular comic practice 😂 I particularly liked the garden composition, such a clever way to feature many interesting details from the same destination.
Aw it’s never too late to start one! Glad you enjoyed the video, a diary is a fun place to experiment with formats 😊
You are AMAZING. Discovered this video through your Substack. ❤
Thankyou so much! 🥰 I think you might enjoy the ‘Looking at Picture Books’ series on my channel
Thank you for this glimpse into your journal. I love the idea of keeping a comic journal, but I do need to practise drawing people a lot more first
I was actually terrible at drawing people when I started so don’t let that hold you back! It’s the best possible practice - and when I look back at the early ones even the bad drawings bring back the memories very vividly so it really doesn’t matter
Promo'SM 😓
Awww that was sweet. I love seeing these little background chats!
Thankyou! I really enjoy making these videos and it's always lovely to get feedback! :)
What a stunning, joyful community masterpiece - bravo Jane for this amazing work and all the young artists and everyone involved in drawing attention to precious river life !❤❤❤
thankyou so much dear Bridget! :)
This just came up on my TH-cam and I love your mural Jane!
Thankyou so much Claire! :)
Oh Jane! You really are a star! And all of the children are stars too. What a dynamic and wonderful project. We need more of this sort of community involvement and more talented Janes as well!
Aw thankyou Dianne, it's definitely the children that are the stars here - I just LOVED the work they made! So nice to see it larger than life on public display :)
❤What a brilliant project, so well coordinated and accomplished. Great community involvement and inspiring for the children.
Thankyou Paul, I’m going to miss it now it’s over!
Great video
thankyou!
This was such a delightful video to see ❤
Thankyou!
This book looks lovely , I loved seeing frogs in our pond too! The illustrations are brilliant, but I wondered, as an artist yourself, do you find it hard not doing the illustrations yourself after creating the story/ text?
Thankyou Sarah! And that's a good question - especially since I started as an illustrator! When Walker Books first suggested that someone else might illustrate my text, I was a bit taken aback - very temporarily - but I soon saw that it's actually really lovely to collaborate with others, and SUCH a treat when you get to see the artwork for the first time. I LOVE what Neil did with the frogs! 💚💚💚
Love your videos!
Thankyou! :)
I've just been monoprinting textures to start collaging for my picture book. Your work is gorgeous, so inspiring. Thank you 💖from Australia xx
Thankyou so much, that's made my day! 😃😃
I’ve been enjoying these videos very much. Brava!
That's lovely to hear, thankyou!
😮 Amazing art!
Jane, your artwork is gorgeous, and you have created such sweet, expressive characters! What glue do you use? Do you scan yourself? Any tips are so appreciated.
Thankyou so much! I just use ordinary Pritt sticks - and yes I do scan it all myself, which can be tricky when the paper size is bigger than my A4 scanner. Photoshop is very useful to join everything back together again... just working on a new collage book now so watch this space!
@@JanePorterPictureBooks Thank you! I'll look forward to the peek at your new work soon!
One more thing, Im 10 now!!!!
Hi jane I remeber being on that stool in Waterstones when the book was first published, thanks for all the good memories!
And thankYOU for being so inspiring!! I have very happy memories of that day XXX
Hi guys The book was inspired by Vasileios Papagatsias and thats me
🥰🥰🥰
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing this.
I'm really glad you enjoyed it!
That was great, a lovely insight into the process of creating your book, thank you :) I love John Burningham's work also..
So glad you enjoyed it, thankyou Claire!
Congratulations on this book to you and Maisie. And thank you for showing 'BORKA'. So absolutely gorgeously illustrated! LOVE LOVE it!
Isn't Borka wonderful! Thankyou so much for watching!
Thank you, Jane. Lovely to read about Gertie and the penguins and to hear how it all came together over time after your initial idea.
Thankyou so much Clare!
Awesome!
thankyou!
Love this look inside your new book, and love Maisie's illustrations. Will have to order a copy as "the boy who loved everyone' is still one of our favourites! Thank you
Hi Jane, Your work is lovely and fun! I am working on a project using collage for kids. I see you use cartridge paper. I have never heard of it, but I recall heaving seen a heavy paper with flecks in it. What brand do you use? It seems sturdier than using construction paper. Your art is charming. I look forward to more videos. Thank you for sharing. I wish you much success.
Thankyou and I am so glad you enjoyed the video! I just use an ordinary cartridge from Cass Art (I think it's around 200gsm) - but anything will do as long as it's thick enough not to crinkle. I love papers with textures and flecks in. The great thing about collage is that there are no rules! Enjoy and I am sure the kids will enjoy it too! Thanks for watching.
@@JanePorterPictureBooks Thank you for the information and responding so quickly! Happy collaging.🤩
@@lifeisart8120 My pleasure!
This is amazing! I started a journal 11 years ago and some days I would add a tiny drawing for something special and now I can see how that transformed over the years, now beeing almost 50% writing and 50% drawings. Wish I could be as talented as you! This was very inspiring thank you for sharing it!!
Thankyou so much Manuel, I am glad you found it inspiring! Good luck with your journal :)
Yes,appreciate your sharing Jane. All best with the new paints!
Thankyou - it’s my pleasure!
