I've designed jewelry for Britney, Debra Messing, Kate Flannery, Victoria's Secret models, national news personalities and for many of you! But what I love best about pearls is teaching people about them so that they can fall in love like I have, so that they can feel confident in participating in pearl fashion and so they can make smart buying decisions. Pearl Expert Reveals if You Can Spot Fake Pearls with Fire
In my video "4 Ways to Tell if Pearls are Real or Fake" I didn't mention "the flame test" and many of you commented that it was another way to determine if pearl are real or fake. So, I decided to burn some pearls! Watch to see what happens... and watch to the end to see a funny example of me doing this in public!
Here are a few thoughts that I didn't include....
Many freshwater pearls are treated, it can be for color or luster. Lately I have even seen pearl farms in China offer freshwater pearls that are coated with something that makes them more shiny. When asked, no one can seem to tell me (or want to) what the coating is. So, I also lit a golden south sea pearl and a Tahitian pearl. There was absolutely no effect on the Tahitian but the light golden south sea pearl seems to turn slightly brown.
Does any of this really matter though? I could do a full test on all types of pearls and pearls with treatments, but why? My point of this video is that, regardless of whether a fake pearl gets destroyed by fire or a real pearl makes it though ok or slightly scathed, this isn't a technique we should use.

Whoever suggested this test is an idiot. And so are the flemmings who follow this advice. A pearl takes years of hard work by an innocent God's creature to make. Why destroy such beauty?

I used to work in a jewelry export company that uses pearls, swarovski, stones and crystals in the Philippines so i guess i can tell if the pearl is real or not.
Yep, If you're around them enough you can usually tell at a glance.
Question on Tahitian pearls: are they rough or smooth (to understand if they are real or not?)
They are the same as other pearls... a little bit gritty when you rob them on your teeth. Check out my video " 4 ways to tell if your pearls are real or fake" and that might help!
I was lucky my wonderful husband bought me at an auction a late Victorian south sea pearl necklace thirty five years ago when I was thirty. I still treasure it (and couldn’t afford to replace it today! )

Oh,Please! It is not real vs fake, it is natural, cultured, or fake. Cultured pearls are real in the sense that they are made by oysters, as are natural pearls, but cultured pearls are started by the manual insertion by a human into the oyster of a tiny grain of sand or other starter material. Natural pearls are started by a tinier grain inserted by chance and nature into the oyster. Essentially nobody can afford natural pearls.

Wish you would’ve done a side by side comparison of fresh vs saltwater pearl. I just don’t see much of a difference to justify paying saltwater price vs fresh.

@@mattharrispearlsI will watch. I ended up purchasing an 18in Mikimoto necklace, 7-7.5 mm, 18k white gold clasp - Christmas gift for my lady. I feel like I overpaid for the “brand” but at least it’ll have the WOW factor and it got me off the hook shopping for multiple gifts - one big gift , a stocking stuffer , and I’m done lol. Anyway, appreciate the 411 and looking forward to that side by side comparison. I think it’ll do well on TH-cam - not a lot of people show the difference

Jade doesn’t scratch and pearls don't burn. Is that not true?
You'll be excited to know that I just recorded a pearl burn video! Should be out at the end of this week. And jade can be scratched by anything harder than quartz.
My pearls fell apart they were my grandmas she never had a clasp put on so they still have a tag on that says They are from Japan it has wax seals on the tag ,it it costly to have them restrung
Depends... many stringers charge by the inch and if they are tiny pearls it takes more time so they charge more. I think the average going rate to re-string a strand of medium sized pearls in most places here in the USA is about $80.

Slightly off topic, but many decades ago, when I was young, I was gifted a short strand of tiny pearls. They have long since yellowed. Is there any way to whiten them?
I'm afraid not. You can try to clean them and see how much of that is one the surface, but being porous they kinda suck in everything and discolor. I just made a video about how to care for you pearls but haven't posted it yet... keep an eye out and you can avoid this in the future

I have these parl earings of my grandma. It passes the tooth test, and both of them would appear to be free to be freash water perals. About 1 cm each. Both are slightly flattened and not round but are diferent withs and roundness. They seem to be real but the strage thing is that they have both have steel rods drilled into them with a bit of glue that doesn't come off by rubbing it or pealing it. So im stumped and so are the jewelers I took it to
maybe those rods wear part of a post for a stud earring and they broke off? Hard to get them out, but if you heat the pearl over a flame and try to use pliers to pull the metal pout it might work . Be careful

I think it´s interesting what you said about the salt water pearls and the fresh water pearls..i believe the most ethical consumption would be buying a freshwater pearl necklace because they don´t die after they are rippen from their pearls..what do you think?
Interesting thought... thanks! I think it depends on how you look at ethics. If you narrow it down to simply being determined by the life span of the mollusk then is it more "ethical" to support freshwater? Keep in mind that mollusks have no central nervous system and experience no pain. Then consider expanding ethics to cover the pearl farming operation, employees, the environment, etc. I think those might have a larger weight than the life of the mollusk. This might be a topic or 3 that iIl consider making a video about. Thanks!

Mr Matt Harris, please, search the history of where from the pearls of that crown. Lies within those pearls are the brokehearts of the people, an indigenous tribe in Bugsuk Island, Palawan Phil's. They were oppressed by the people who rgreedily uns the pearl farm in that island.

How do you differienciate a Fresh Water Pearl from a Sea Pearl? Thanks!
It takes experience looking at many pearls and then you can just tell. Some obvious signs are there too like size, shape and color. Learning how to spot Akoya, South Sea and Tahitan pearls might be the way to start and then the freshwater become more obvious when you see them.

You look like such a knowledgeable man I had to watch your video I love pearls, have a genuine set from my great grandmother. Play the I've been making jewelry and I found that people really like my copper heart outlined in pearls. Obviously I don't want to use real pearls but, like I said I couldn't resist your face and had to watch the video. I was wondering if you knew the best fake pearls to buy, preferably off Amazon where the paint won't chip. 😊 Pearls come from mussels they did not know that.

Most jewelers probably won't have any pearls that aren't already set in jewelry, but you could call some local jewelers and ask! Feel free to send me more of a description and I'll see if I can provide you one out of my stash!
