    Great vid! Been using soil blocks for around 7 years. Most likely will never go back to anything else. Even with a lot of plants (1,400 for a home garden) this year we find it easier than plug trays. I don't mind getting messy making the mix in the spring and the explosive growth up-blocking and planting out is wonderful.

    I love the pastel/muted tones of the Floret seeds but my customers like bright, saturated colors. So I won't be growing any Floret seeds. Is the air conditioner venting into your basement? If so you might end up having a big humidity problem. Also, I don't know what coolbot is capable of doing, but those huge waves of temps might be due to the air conditioning coming on at 100%, cooling that area super fast and then shutting off. Maybe there's a way to have coolbot tell it to not come on at 100%. Like gas mileage, it might be better for it to cool slower and maintain a temp longer. I'm excited to see how you like it this season. And I'm jealous! I want a walk in cooler!

    • @OliviasBlooms
      @OliviasBlooms 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, it is venting into the basement. Coolbot’s website says it is safe and that most of the humidity stays in the cooler, which is what you want when storing flowers! I bought a thermometer with a humidity gauge to test it though! I will let you know how it actually works with flowers and if I can do it, you could totally build one!:)

    Not sure since you said they rotted - it they are mushy I'm guessing not - but give it a go with the rest! My husband literally took out ranunculus from my bed last year (I couldn't due to chemotherapy) - he just put them in a tin pan and left them in the shed all summer in the heat (I'm in SC 7b/8a cusp). When I was done with chemo in Oct, I found them all dried up but washed them off, soaked them and put them in one of my low tunnels for the winter. So far 90 of 116 are sprouting and look fantastic. I am shocked and happy..... so there is hope for yours!

    Thank you for this video! I really want to try soil blocking! I do have a question- after researching lights and seed starting, everything I've read indicates that blue light frequencies are best for starting seeds, and then using a combination of red and blue after they have more than a few leaves which is used as a transition to just the red which encourages flowering. I notice you have the red light over your newly planted seeds. Have you tried this transitional method before, and if so, did it work out? Or do you have a specific reason for using the red light on newly planted seeds? I'm relatively new to gardening and am trying to learn all that I can. I appreciate any advice I can get. As you probably know, there's an abundance of wrong information on the internets, so I want to make sure I do things the right way by asking people who know better than I do.

    • @OliviasBlooms
      @OliviasBlooms 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Amanda, so glad you want to try soil blocking! Regarding lights, I have a few red/blue ones that my husband bought me, so I’m trying them out on my seedlings in addition to lights I have that are pure blue this year. You are correct that different light is supposed to be better for different growth stages. I haven’t noticed a difference in the seedlings under the different lights. So far. It may not matter as much since they are only under lights for a few weeks. If I was just starting out, I would buy inexpensive shop lights. Those worked just as well:) I have more info about my lights in my soil blocking supplies video!

    • @amandasshadow9605
      @amandasshadow9605 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @OliviasBlooms Ah! I gotchya! I'm a videographer and have some old LED daylight balanced light panels that we don't use for shooting footage anymore. I've been using those so far. They don't change color, but I have gels (colored heat resistant plastic-like squares used to color conventional theatrical lights). I plan on experimenting with red and blue gels. I just tape them over the lights. I'll be interested to see the results. I'm also very interested in the results you've been getting. I love science and experiments!

    • @OliviasBlooms
      @OliviasBlooms 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s a great question and for some things you won’t, but the soil temperature is always cooler than the air temperature. The other benefit of adding heat is that you get faster and more even germination, which helps reduce algae growth. Experiment and see if it works without!

    Good luck in your first year! Im going into my third. My best advice is take good notes of everything...when things bloom, the color palette that sells the best, what likes to be started in soil blocks and what doesn't....write down everything you can. It makes planning for the next year so much easier. I sell at a Farmers Market and my customer is so much different than what you picture yours to be. I learned my first year that people just want bright, colorful flowers and really don't care if the are "specialty" flowers or not. My ranuncs and lisianthus ended up costing me money. I sell in a small college town where most of my customers are either elderly or young, college kids. I haven't attempted a CSA yet. So good luck and just roll with whatever comes at you. Be prepared to pivot and adapt. And have fun! I love it when people see my flowers and tell me stories about their Grandma that grew flowers. It's the best.

    You can definitely plant snaps closer than 9 inches. I've done mine at 6 inches and they were fine. If you plan on doing succession and not relying heavily on the side shoots Dave Dowling says to put 3 seeds together at 6x6 spacing.
