      @birdnestfarms 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@deborahhowe4595 I assume they are called “supers” because they go on top of the beehive. I base that assumption on the Latin meaning to “go beyond”, “over”, “on top of”, or “added to”.

    I live right by you! Right off campfire. Getting a bee box for my husband for his birthday. What kind would you recommend?

    • @birdnestfarms
      @birdnestfarms 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Howdy Neighbor! I would recommend the following: Traditional Growing Apiary Kit, Painted by Mann Lake: www.mannlakeltd.com/assembled/traditional-growing-apiary-kit-painted/ They sell this kit in two different sizes (8 frame and 10 frame). Most beekeepers use the 10-frame kit but some older folks or those with back issues, prefer the lighter 8 frame kits. Either way you decide to go, stick to that size so your parts will be interchangeable. You may want to consider asking them to replace the yellow foundation with black foundation so you can see the eggs easier. This makes a significant difference. If you want more information on things like what bee suit to purchase or equipment (smoker, scraper, etc.) he will need, just let me know. Sounds like a good video topic.

    Hello from Houma!! Is the dark honey because of fall harvest or because of the flowers they forage from??

    • @birdnestfarms
      @birdnestfarms 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello there. My understanding is that both are correct. The spring flow for many beekeepers is much lighter and more of a golden color verses a fall flow which is much darker. The reason for the color difference is because of the available flowers in bloom during various seasons. We pull our honey in the fall which is a combination of both spring and fall honey. On another note, watching the different pollen colors is very interesting. You can see this throughout several of the videos. Thanks for the comment!

    Sorry you lost those whole hives. Seems like there's been alot of beekeepers not being able to do their hives this summer for various reasons. I've not been able to do mine either with the excess heat and getting covid 2x this summer. Breathing with the high humidity has been brutal. I lost all of my July and August queens from my mating yard and those nucs became empty as the bees absconded due to hive beetles and some wax moths. Was able to save some of the foundationless comb to the freezer. We have some extra experience this year of what to try to prevent from happening again next year. Hope you get to harvest from the other hives and get a good fall flow. I started pulling all capped combs and running through the freezer and storing in tote til fall. Haven't had to feed this year for the first time. All but 1 hive had plenty capped to pull and I only pulled half from each. That 1 hive had some empty combs they evidently consumed over the summer building up all the brood. I will divide capped honey amongst the hive to make sure they each have plenty to winter over but will keep that fruity tasting honey to harvest for the family. Next year our health and other issues will give us better luck I'm sure.

    • @birdnestfarms
      @birdnestfarms 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How many hives did you lose? Im sure you thought of this already but, make sure you allow the frozen frames to defrost before you put them in the hive. Skipping this step can cause significant issues in your hives. I personally made that mistake. Fortunately it was in the summer.

    Great swarm catch! For your ant problem, if you're interested, you may want to try a product called "Tanglefoot" it's a sticky mess when applying it (use an old gift card, etc. and/or some rubber disposable gloves). That hive is thankfully on a stand and you can apply the tanglefoot around the 4x4s surrounding the hive so that the ants can't get past it and into the hive. It's kind of like a fly trap so to speak. They just can't cross it. It does wear off over time with rain, dirt, etc. so you'd need to reapply. You can usually get it at your local hardware store. I'm sorry I missed the premiere. Just got in and really should be out in the shop making more woodenware, but figured I'd watch this first. Hives are looking great. Glad to see the supersedure queen made it back successfully. Thanks for sharing

      Thanks for the support. I’m starting to watch your videos as I have free time. I like some of the ideas you are working on.

      @@birdnestfarms I appreciate that. I'm trying to do the same with yours. Usually once I get settled down, I start to watch a few. I sub to a lot and try to spread my time between them all. Do you mind if I share your channel on a Tuesday night Live chat? If you look at Kodiak Farm Bees-Lee and Walker Bee Ranch (both on TH-cam,) they do a Live chat every Tuesday. We usually try to put the the name of a TH-camr that doesn't have a ton of Subs to see if we can get them some more. You're also welcome to sit in on it if you like. They also open it up for anyone to join in the streamyard if you like going live (I barely like being on camera myself as it is). I can't remember if it starts at 6:00 or 7:00 Central. Also, if you go to both channels and hit the like and Subscribe and leave a comment on both channels last Tuesday (5-17-22 Live chat) they're having a drawing for some pretty good stuff that was donated by Blythewood Bee Company. Swarm trap, Swarm commander, etc. I think there's 3 more drawings, with the next one being Tuesday 5-24-22. I'm pretty sure it's still open if you just sub, like and comment on both channels 5-17-22 chat (has to be both though). It's a pretty good community. They go off topic sometimes, but try to stick to bee talk for the most part. Enjoy your weekeknd!
