He did a concert in Soviet Russia, and they thought he was some kind of musical god.

@@PointyTailofSatan yeah it is a two part concert and at the time he was unknown there. So at the first part the hall was relatively empty but after hearing him play the place got full with people

@@emreozdemir3164 Is was more than that. The only people initially attending were not "regular" concert goers. They were curious Moscow Conservatory classical music students and instructors, who were used to seeing and hearing great musicians, So for Gould to have such an impact on that audience, he really must have been incredible.

This "purist" word is a canard to dismiss those who are not moved by the cult of personality surrounding him and his personal eccentricities that somehow pass as "genius" to his acolytes. The man was bizarre as was his music-making. You have to be in love with HIM to love his playing

@@davidmdyer838 "you have to be in love with HIM to love his playing" Not true. I fell in love with his playing first, and hard. I only investigated the "person" afterward. And found he was a man who clearly expressed his ideals and consistently strove to express them. Not eccentric at all.

@@theomavridis6979 @waynesmith3767 used a post about Gould to attack others whom I defended. This Gibbons performance is one of the better things he's done, although I think he does some eccentric things with it that mar the performance somewhat. Look at the comments on virtually any Gould performance, they are fawning in the extreme, does this not look like a cult of personality? If anyone dares disagree, anyone familiar with the repertory he plays, they are attacked, there is no not liking anything Gould does. It's a defensive fan club in the extreme. I found his 1950s Goldberg likable, his later recording unlistenable. I like some things he's recorded and not so much others. But he was not a genius at everything he did and I don't understand how anyone can fail to consider him eccentric no matter how much you like him.
