NASA qualifying - UMC Outer in 991.2 Cup
Here's a clean qualifying lap on a very hot summer day (100 F) at Utah Motorsports Campus on the Outer Loop configuration. Racing with NASA, the field was comprised of 38 cars, many from out of town preparing for the NASA National Championships. I qualified P7, but finished the race in P4 by getting a great start and holding faster 992 Cup Cars just behind me for a photo finish.

This is my first-ever qualifying session at UMC Outer on new tires (what a treat), and the car turned much better than I expected, resulting in some slightly early apexes and hitting a bit too much inside curbing, but I did 2 laps in a row with exactly the same time, to the hundredth of a second. If I had a do-over, as every driver loves to lament, I'd have gone deeper into every hard braking zone, used more of the front grip available to get more rotation with slightly later apexes, and get to throttle a bit sooner on exits leading onto the long straights.

What car class is this?
It’s GTSU, a mis-match as this car is really designed to be a spec car racing other GT4 cars, so we sold it since there weren’t any other similar cars racing consistently.
That’s fast…I’d expect faster from a gt3. I was doing those times in a bone stock 996tt on street tires, so…
Willow Springs race track brings wonderful memories to me. Back in 1968, I went to Jim Russell’s Racing School. Then the school was using Lotus formula ford cars. The thrill of sitting on a gas tank and the frame of the car transferring hot water made my day. Watching the apexes and speed was great knowledge I still use today. At 78, I’ll still enjoy a drive on a good mountain road with lots of corners. I hope this classic icon to racing history stays alive and well. 😊
Good advice. Best is to do a two day high performance school there. I’d be doing 1:35’s in a bone stock 996tt with street tires after some real good hands on lessons.
By the time you get to 145mph isn’t there so much downforce that it’s confidence inspiring to keep it flat? Or does it squirm around a bit? I know it’s a bit bumpy back there, curious because I figured it would just be a game of managing slight understeer at that high of speed
What is the purpose of the emergency gearbox button on the middle part my dad has a cup too and we try to figure out
The emergency gearbox disables electronic aids such as rev limiting and although I haven’t had to use it, believe it’s designed to get you back to the pits of you can’t get the car into gear after a spin or some other malfunction. I’ve heard of one person racing with the e-box in a pinch, but I don’t think that would be quite risky.
