Beyond The Treeline
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 11 มิ.ย. 2023
Hey there! My name is Nathan, and Beyond The Treeline is where I hope to share my love for wilderness through my canoeing and backpacking adventures. I enjoy engaging with others over the admiration of wild places; and, in sharing my experiences, I hope is to inspire a love for wilderness.
I love filming in nature because it helps me to slow down and appreciate everything around me in a simple and pure way. I intend to keep my videos authentic to that and independent from brands, sponsorships, and advertisement. If you feel like supporting me in that endeavor, feel free to visit my Buy Me A Coffee page. But more than anything I hope you'll connect with me over this passion for wilderness!

How tall a chimney you like to run to avoid burning holes in tent. Just bought the same tent myself
@@mikeknape7064 great! It’s a fantastic tent. I went with a 7.5ft stove pipe and that seemed to do a great job. That’s what Seek Outside recommended and it seems to be doing well.
What a fantastic journey! Impressive endurance. And not to mention amazing video editing
@@DrDitchpickle thank you! So glad you enjoyed the journey with us!
I'd be willing to bet that pack rafts were beginning to look much more appealing after the first two or three portages with a 17' canoe in such high country and rough terrain, no? I still enjoyed watching your adventure, but please guys: wet your hands before handling fish that you intend to release!
@@willong1000 haha the conversation definitely came up about pack rafts! It was fun regardless though, but definitely would have been easier. Hey thanks for that advice. I try to practice good ethics when fishing (and really any outdoor recreation) but had never been taught that one. I’m newer to fly fishing so I’ll for sure remember that and make sure to wet my hands before handling them. It makes a lot of sense. Thank you!
What is that large container you have with you?
@@alexisstrain934 the large blue one? It’s a food barrel. Pretty handy for long canoe trips. Easy to store stuff in and I bought a harness to go with it so it’s easy to carry.
Awesome video, wet your hands tho
The 7300'+ elevation really is no joke, congrats on not getting altitude sickness tbh
@@JeffBachtel it really is no joke! Haha thanks, glad we didn’t get altitude sickness either.
Bro needs some safe and proper axe use lessons.
I recommend some David Goggins motivational videos! Cheers!
@@TenkaraTickFarm I’ll check him out!

Wow! Nice camp. The lighter color combo gives it a whole different feel.
Utah is a place that will make you feel humble and leave you stunned at the beauty of it all.
@@MaineOffGrid. 100%! We felt that for sure. It’s incredible!
Gonna binge watch the rest of the Utah trip. I spent 5 weeks in Utah a few years ago. St. George and Zion area. Absolutely gorgeous place. Can’t wait to get back there!
@@MaineOffGrid. well I hope you enjoy it! It really is a stunning place!
First of all, what a fantastic job on this video! I canoe’d the Colorado River from Potash - Cataract Canyon solo about 10 years ago. You really captured the beauty & absolute solitude of southeastern Utah! I plan on doing the Green pretty much the same way you two did, but probably late September -early October timeframe. Did I hear you say it was November when you went? Again, great video guys! 👍🇺🇸❤️
@@TimTheJeepGuy thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it. Utah really is a stunning place! We couldn’t get over how absolutely dramatic everything was. And you’re so right, you feel the solitude and silence a lot and I love it! I bet that would be a fantastic time of year also. Yea we went in early November. We got good weather, but it seems like it could go either way depending on the year. The last day was pretty chilly, but the rest of it was perfect. I want to do more of that canyon system for sure!
No idea why you brought a canoe. The trips perfect with a 20lb pack and a fly rod.
@@jessecotter1285 because it was a fun challenge, not much other reason that that. It’s gorgeous paddling those alpine lakes so that was worth it. We definitely could have just backpacked it, but for this trip, my point was to try and find a place to canoe trip in the mountains. And it was fun!
It’s amazing that you guys drove so far to do this. That’s awesome! Good for you! I’ve lived in Maine my whole life and haven’t yet done the Allagash. Hopefully one of these days. How did you shuttle your gear while running the rapids? I noticed your gear wasn’t in the canoe.
@@MaineOffGrid. it definitely was a long drive but totally worth it! You live in a beautiful state! For the gear, there were some rangers at Churchill Dam that offered to take our gear to the end of the rapids for like $10. It was nice because we could just focus on running the rapids. Not an option you usually get haha. I hope you get to do the Allagash someday, it’s an amazing place! Thanks for watching!
@ That’s awesome that the Rangers offered to help with that!
@@MaineOffGrid. it was! All the rangers were great. We met several along the route and they all had great stories to tell and were always super helpful.

Did you guys lose a GoPro on that first portage?
@@larjohnsonrfl6161 haha good question :) Thankfully no, but I had a mic attachment on it and when I accidentally dunked it I stopped to take the GoPro off and make sure I didn’t ruin the mic. Thankfully I didn’t do that either haha.

@@tjlarsen5 thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. You’ll have a blast! It’s amazing up there! We went end of September to early October. Got a little chilly towards the end of the trip, but for the most part the weather was incredible.

Hey there buddy! This was a great great watch! Man that was a lot of walking! That looked awesome!!! I noticed you had a nano on the first night! I love mine! I take a trangia in case it rains. Hey I was gonna ask… how do you meet the different people to go on these trips with? I was just wondering because as a sober 53 year old looking to cover maybe 8 miles a day who hammock camps, it’s hard to find people. Like how did you meet this young man on this trip? I’m just trying to figure out how I can meet people to go on trips with. You take care sir and again this was gorgeous country!!! NQU
@@notquiteultralight1701 hey! Glad you liked this one too! Yes, and I totally meant to shout you out for it because you were the one who recommended it to me! I like using it. Good question haha. I’ve been really blessed to have several people I can go with on these trips. Some of them are friends I grew up with, some in the recent videos are guys from a small group I’m part of through our church. This guy is one of them. There are 6 of us and I’ve been slowly getting them into these longer trips with me. I definitely understand how hard it is to find people. I’ve had to ease some of my friends into it through shorter trips. I’m also part of a canoe club and a lot of those guys go on trips together too. So that also seems like a great way to meet people. But yea it’s hard sometimes to find people who want to do the same kind of adventures.
@ so good to hear back. I like the stove because of its size, burn efficiency and the fact that the size fuel you use is too small to be over harvested in popular backcountry sites. Plus you can break it by hand so you don’t really need a saw or hatchet. On people to go with, I’ve considered standing up at my church during joy’s and concerns during service and offering to chat after service during coffee hour about going on trips. You may have inspired me to do so. I did finally pick up a ZOLEO just in case. Of course with the ZOLEO you need a wide open shot to the heavens which can be a tall order in VT. I’m a hammock camper as of now but that can change. I kinda like the floor less pyramid tents from ddhammocks. At least with floor less you might have a couple plants in there with you in your temporary home😁. Great to hear from you and you take care. NQU
@ I agree! It is super convenient because of all that. I’ve enjoyed using it. Yea great idea! You’ll have to keep me posted if you find anyone to go with! I’ve been surprised with how many people I run into who are open to stuff like this. They may just not have all the experience of longer trips. But then it’s fun helping someone get into the outdoors and experience some of these places. The ZOLEO is a good idea. My friend has an Inreach so we just typically bring that along and I haven’t looked into some of those other satellite devices. This was my first time using a flourless tent and I really liked it!
So you hiked past the lake with the huge brookies to fish the tiny brookies and then hiked past the trophy sized brookies again without taking the time to cast to them...Hmmm curious.
@@bryanjelinski8036 well yea we definitely passed several lakes we wished we had been able to fish. We did a lot of hiking around and didn’t always have our fly rods with us unfortunately. But still had a lot of fun!
Fero rod is interesting, it works similar to the way a matchlock rifle worked.
@@Mainepolingguide yea I really like it. Paired with that wick it’s a great fire kit.
Had to stop watching I miss this place too much. Every time I leave I think about going back

How does camping work do you need to reserve spots if so how do I do that? Also how many spots are along the way when acceding the actually peak?
@@Blackbelt_97 no permits needed. It’s all just wild camping. So you’ll see spots that people continue to use, but there aren’t any facilities. Best practice is to reuse sites that are clearly used. You’ll see plenty on this trail all along the way. There aren’t really any sites above treeline though. So climbing the peak is easiest to do as a day hike from your camp. I usually try to camp at the lakes or rivers. Then you’ll have plenty of water and wood for a fire. If you go you’ll have to let me know! And if you have any other questions let me know.
