Beyond The Treeline
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 11 มิ.ย. 2023
Hey there! My name is Nathan, and Beyond The Treeline is where I hope to share my love for wilderness through my canoeing and backpacking adventures. I enjoy engaging with others over the admiration of wild places; and, in sharing my experiences, I hope is to inspire a love for wilderness.
I love filming in nature because it helps me to slow down and appreciate everything around me in a simple and pure way. I intend to keep my videos authentic to that and independent from brands, sponsorships, and advertisement. If you feel like supporting me in that endeavor, feel free to visit my Buy Me A Coffee page. But more than anything I hope you'll connect with me over this passion for wilderness!

Great Video. I was looking at the river level.. starting the day of your take-out, in 24hrs the river went from 155cfs to 1,430cfs! Wow. Ponca gauge. Now I need to rewatch your winter(?) trip of the entire Buffalo. I just remember you swamping at Clabber!
@@Jorlanshinkle thanks! Yea it’s crazy how much it fluctuates in short periods of time. That’s crazy! Haha yea it was winter then also. We were riding the tail end of some rain/snow, so we were able to keep up with good levels. But yea I still think back to that day at Clabber haha. Great memories!
If it wasn’t for the hole in the tent the arrow would cause I’d be coming home with a beautiful fox pelt
@@caseymiddleton5534 lol! Yea that fur was really gorgeous. I couldn’t stop admiring it. Can’t say that thought didn’t cross my mind also haha 😂
That’s the fattest fox I’ve ever seen! Beautiful.
@@Beyond_The_Treeline One nearly got that treatment August of 2023, just finished sighting my bow in and put it away when I turn around to see this fox trotting through the parking lot
@@notquiteultralight1701 yea he was definitely the healthiest fox I’ve ever seen! He seems to eat pretty good out there.

Awesome video! I always enjoy seeing other parts of the lake I haven’t been to yet. I just got back recently from a Lake Superior trip on the Minnesota side. I usually go once a year. No canoeing but really beautiful hiking. After seeing videos like this and Lost Lakes I have made it a goal of mine to eventually buy a canoe and start canoeing Lake Superior. It’s my absolute favorite place to be at in the outdoors.
@@alexbrandon2193 thanks! Glad you liked it! Totally, Lake Superior is one of my favorite places too. It took me awhile to finally do this trip, but we’ve been thinking about it for years. That’s exciting you’re thinking about paddling it too! If I can ever help with anything let me know. I’ve spent a decent amount of time around Superior, but paddling it was a special experience for sure. Lost Lakes was a big inspiration for me too. I love Jon’s channel. Do you do a lot of hiking on the Superior Hiking Trail? I’ve been wanting to hike that (or at least part of it) for years. Any tips or favorite parts to hike up there?
@@Beyond_The_Treeline I’ve done small parts of Superior hiking trail over the years. Mostly to get to different peaks and overlooks. Hard to say what’s the best part. Really an endless number of overlooks and spur trails that go up to different peaks. Carlton peak and Waterfalls at Temperance river state park and High falls at Tettegouche state park are must sees. This past trip I was mostly in Tettegouche State park along the coast and inland to see high falls. Only one part of SHT goes directly along the lake, although you get great views of it from SHT, so I definitely recommend people do some stops along the coast like mount Josephine near the Canadian border or the cliffs at Palisade head and shovel point in Tettegouche. These are not on the Sht but a short to moderate hike from the car.
@@alexbrandon2193 nice! Thanks for the recommendations. I definitely need to get up to Mount Josephine, I’ve been meaning to do that for awhile. I need to just do another slow drive up the north shore and hit a bunch of those in one go. That would be kinda fun and a great little road trip!
Gents, came across your channel while researching the BWCAW and then watched this one as well...ok, I'm still watching it, but have to ask what the water temp is. About a decade ago, wife and I did some kayaking in the Apostles and we had to wear wet suits while paddling. I don't recall the water temperature, but I do remember the guide saying that I'd we fell in, we'd have just a few minutes before our ability to self rescue was no longer an option
@@fargoaerials3456 hey that’s awesome! Glad you’re enjoying the channel. Yea Superior is really cold haha. So it was probably in the 40s that time of year. Definitely was on our mind all the time. That’s why we brought the spray deck and took a lot of precaution when it came to when we would paddle. That first day with the waves was a big concern of ours, so that’s why we played it really safe the rest of the time. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@Beyond_The_Treeline brrr! Yeah, kind of a bummer if you go in. When we rented a kayak in Apostles, they made us go upside down and then recover. That was the final exam.
@@fargoaerials3456 definitely would be! Depending on the situation, could be a quick end to a trip… That’s pretty cool about the Apostles. Ive never learned how to recover in a kayak. That would be cool! I’ve always wanted to go check out the Apostle Islands. Did you get to paddle between all the islands?
@@Beyond_The_Treeline we ended the trip a day early due to weather, but in theory, yeah, you paddle between some of the islands depending on how much time one has. Would make a great adventure and film 😀
@@fargoaerials3456 that’s awesome! I bet it would. I’ll have to look into it because I plan to spend more time padding around Superior for sure :)
I have fond memories of the Allagash River. My parents, Kenneth and Louise Wetmore, were both Registered Maine Guides. We went as a family several times in the mid-'60s. I remember those steam engines were inside a shed when I was last there and a caretaker lived there back then. My parents guided several trips down that river every year. They have both passed on but they had a wonderful life together in those woods. You were walking in their footsteps. Thank You for the memories. Joel
@@joelkennethwetmore1574 that’s amazing! I’m sure you have some incredible memories from there. It’s an amazing place to spent that much time.
Beautiful video, guys. Curious where did you stash your gear while doing the rapids? I didn’t see it in the boat.
@@ChipChannel17 thanks! Great question. The rangers at Churchill dam offer to shuttle your gear to the base of the rapids for like $10. So we took them up on the offer to just focus on running rapids.
I just climbed those shoots last week. Not an easy hike. We tried for north Truchas but didn't go all the way, because of the skree/footing, but did summit sheepshead. But you are correct, every direction you look is a stunning veiw
@@charlesmunson3232 that’s amazing! Yea it’s a crazy hike up there haha. Definitely worth the effort though. Yea that last bit to North Truchas is one of the most intense hikes I’ve done in the area. Wasn’t expecting it.

I used to spend my summers between college terms doing wilderness ranger/trail work with pack mules in the gila every summer. Some of the best times of my life. Wish I would have known about hammocks back then!😃. We did 8 day hitches for work and 6 days off so we would head up to the area where you guys are in this vid. Great to see the great state of NM again! NQU
@@notquiteultralight1701Gila Wilderness sometime. Any recommendations for that area?
I worked in the glen wood ranger district and we had all the high peaks in our district so it was nice. I think you guys will like it. Just please please manage your poop. I dig pretty deep with a good size branch and then use the resulting mound as a pee backdrop. When I was working there… there was some folks that thought that if you just poop on the surface and leave your TP there with it, it will degrade faster with the UV rays. Not so. Anyway. Please be careful with those ridge tops in that part of the country because of lightning. The universe is much too special with the “beyond the treeline” channel!😊
@@notquiteultralight1701 nice! Ok I’ll have to check it out for sure. Oh for sure on the poop front lol. That’s my least favorite thing to come across on trail. It’s really not that hard to leave no trace when it comes to that. I just don’t understand why so many people don’t dig a cat hole and cover everything. Good advice, thanks for the heads up! Lightening is something I try to be really mindful of, especially in the mountains. That’s definitely not something I want to mess with. Thanks so much! That’s super kind. Interactions like this are my favorite part of the channel. And you’ve been commenting basically since the beginning! So thanks for watching along the journey!

You had my heart in my mouth a couple of times on that rather risky 2nd peak you decided to do. I'm just glad the rain didn't make your decent too slippery. I had visions of a long butt slide. Great video and a great adventure. I'm 75 years old and have hiked hundreds of miles in the southwest desert. Lots of it around this area, but never by canoe. I doubt I'll get to canoe the area, but sure enjoyed it vicariously through your video and great narration. One of the most epic moments I had was to hike out to the confluence of the Green and Colorado from The Maze side of the rivers and give a shout to some canoers who were almost to the confluence. I imagine that was a surprise for them hearing us from several hundred feet above. Again, thanks for sharing.
@@tomfarnsworth950 thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the journey with us. The southwest is an incredible region fully of dramatic beauty. Sounds like you’ve had some pretty amazing adventures in the area as well! I bet your view down on the confluence was stunning! I would imagine that stretch of coast because of its remoteness would be fantastic fishing. Great supplement of protein. Awesome video. I first climbed South Truchas Peak in 1977. Climbed it 3 more times over the years. Haven’t ever done that ridge though. Looks fun. I did pass by Truchas Lakes one Memorial Day. Hike up to Heart Lake and up onto Latir Mesa and the hike over to the Bull Creek Trail and back to Cabresto Lake. There are several 12ers besides Latir Mesa that can be done in a day. Long day but doable. Venado is just off trail and worth it. I call the Latirs a mini-Pecos with less people.

But I bet it would have been super unstable after that. The ridge was cool. Really pretty views. But seeing the trail coming up from the south from the top made me want to do that too! That whole area is just so petty everywhere you look. Sweet! I’m so glad you recommended the Latir Peak Wilderness! I was literally looking over maps about 2 weeks ago looking for more spots to explore in northern New Mexico and Latir Peak immoderately caught my attention. Looks like an incredible spot. So now with the recommendation I’ll definitely be going! Here in a couple weeks I’m taking some friends up to Trampas Lakes, but already thinking about early next year I might try to do Latir then. Thanks!
@@Beyond_The_Treeline One other amazing place in New Mexico is Valle Vidal. You can camp there and hike up Little Costilla. Not really backpacking but a wonderful beautiful place to camp and hike. Not sure if you could get permission but Big Costilla is huge mountain in that same area. Private property unfortunately. One other note, a passenger car would not be a good idea on the two mile road to Cabresto Lake.
@@barryraven4745 good to know! Thanks for the recommendations and advice. I’ve been coming back to NM for the past several years and it’s hooked me. I love how diverse and beautiful the state is. Looking forward to exploring it more!
How's you deal with the black flies?
@@vdpeer there weren’t any the time of year we went. We were there in late September and early October, so thankfully no black flies!
You guys should get one of those lightweight DJI mini drones. They weigh 0.5 lbs and film in 4k. You could get some crazy peak shots with that.
@@shaan702 I actually do have one! They are super cool. It’s just you are only allowed to fly them in certain areas and designated Wilderness Areas are off limits. Most of this trip took place in a Wilderness Area so I just wasn’t able to fly it. It would be cool to get some shots on those peaks though!
Beautiful flowers and trees ! Thank you SO much for the video. I watched it twice!
@@rosaliebarry7586 glad you enjoyed it!
I live down in Southern New Mexico but my boyfriend and I hiked up part of that mountain back in 2004. There was a movie made up in that town called the Mango Bean Wars. We watched it after we got back home
@@rosaliebarry7586 that’s awesome! That area is so pretty. I’ve never heard of that movie before, I might have to look it up. Thanks for watching!
