some.. interesting (I hope) titbits 0:10 Utrecht Central Station/Hoogh Catharijne- the Mall were finished just a few years ago with the current layout. They used to be connected in one huge building which was an eyesoar for the city for over 40 years. The new buildings and layout have made it ready for the next 40 years. Utrecht Centraal is the bussiest station in the Netherlands. 1:00 Vredenburg Square, named after the castle that used to stand there. For a castle it had a relative short livespan. It was build in 1529 (until 1532) and mostly demolished in 1577. Parts of it remained however up to 1919. It was under siege during the 80 year war when it was home to the Spanish commander in the Netherlands Francesco Fernando d'Avilla. He decided to point the canons of the castle against the city. The Dutch troops then placed canons on the high buildings surrounding the castle. After the siege, the citizens demanded the castle gone. This was not honored by the Dutch Staten Generaal so the citizens decided "fine, we do it ourselves". This was spearheaded by the legendary Trijn van Leemput. 7:00 The building the museum is housed in is obviously a Church. There has been a church on this location ever since the 10th century A.D. Always called "Buurkerk" (Parish Church, not to be confused with buurtkerk wich would mean neighborhood church). The current building was build after a big fire in 1279 when the former building burned to the ground and instead of repairing it, this Gothic style Church was build in its place. The tower originaly was situated more to the east and got moved to its current position in 1370. This change is still visible inside the Church if you look at the arches of the roof. You can see where the old tower was situated. 9:52 The yellowish building in front of you is City Hall or "Stadhuis" in Dutch. City hall has been situated at this locations since 1343. Some parts of old buildings are still incorporated in the current one. The main parts of the current building have been build and added upon between 1826 and 1847. 12:00 ah, the pride of Utrecht, the Domkerk. Building started around 1254. Telling the entire history of this location would take way to long starting in Roman Era. so TLWR (to long won't read) version... Build from 1254 until "finished" in 1521. Originaly tower and church were connected by a "mid ship". This collapsed during the storm of August 1 1674. The rubble wasn't cleared until 1826. The Church started out as a Catholic Cathedral but was taken over by the Protestants in 1581. I mean, this is just about 10% I know about this place and I know maybe 10% about the place myself. So last thing to note is the ground. You can see the contours of the old mid ship in the pavement and a bit further on the church square, there is an "iron line" showing the borders of the Roman Castellum that was there in Roman Era (see what I mean with way to long?) 18:18 (because I love 18) a short word about the Oudegracht. After Utrecht got city rights in 1122, construction started of a defensive canal we now know as the Oudegracht. It was situated within the walls of the city and was accessed via city gates. Despite it's "defensive" monnicker, its main use was trade and transport. In 1390 work started making the "Nieuwegracht" due to expansion of the city. This was all still within city walls. If you go even further out you encounter the "Singel" around city center (partially running beneath Hoogh Catharijne), this used to be the canal outside the city walls and originated from 1122 as well. Parts of the city wall can still be spotted along the Singel. Although there are several buildings you pass during the remainder of your video, it is all concentrated on a fairly small area of town. I feel for a walking tour you missed a few great spots that are easy to reach and a short walk, If you ever return, feel free to contact (you can find the iinfo in the "abut" on my channel) me and I give you a tour, no strings attached, no fees required. (well... a cup of coffee would be nice of course :P) Much love from Utrecht
