Guy's Bees
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 26 พ.ค. 2020
In 2014 a friend from church walked into our family business and mentioned he was a beekeeper. That conversation led to a winter of fascination and preparation for my first summer of beekeeping.
Over the years beekeeping has brought good years and hard years. Though I've always maintained as long as I'm still having fun and am fascinated by honeybees I'll continue to keep. Walking into my bee yard is a breath of fresh air no matter what's going on in life.
I love raising bees as starter hives for new beekeepers and selling honey (and soon pollen and propolis) in my local Pennsylvania area.
Beekeeping is like most things in life. The best way to be awesome at it is to be yourself.

I Stain My Hives with Boiled Linseed Oil
มุมมอง 4.3K4 ปีที่แล้ว
#beehive #hivetreatment #paintedhives I love the natural look of wood in my apiary if possible. Boiled Linseed Oil gives me that great look and is safe for the bees. Apply a couple coats to the outside (never paint or stain the inside of a hive). Be careful not to ball up your rags afterwards, boiled linseed oil can be dangerous. Quick, Affordable, Simple DIY Bee Hive Stand
มุมมอง 4.3K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This bee hive stand is effective, affordable, and easy to DIY in your apiary. All you need are cement blocks (3 cornerstones and 3 centerstones) and 2 4x4s. This will give you tilt and the perfect height for working the hive without killing your back. Fun Bee Apparel: www.teespring.com/stores/guys-bees #beekeeping #hivestand #diyhivestand
My Introduction to Beekeeping
มุมมอง 274 ปีที่แล้ว
Like you, beekeeping for me began as a fascination. It came out of nowhere. Over the years I've learned a lot and had many ups and downs. As I've learned from others on TH-cam, blogs, books, clubs etc., I've learned even though there are unlimited ways to keep bees, we are better together. Our First Honeybee Swarm Catching Adventure
มุมมอง 574 ปีที่แล้ว
Pennsylvania wild (feral) honeybee swarm on a low tree branch. First of the season, June 4, 2015. This swarm most likely came from an established colony just 10 feet away in a hunting stand. You'll see me shake the swarm into a tub, see inside the tub, shake the swarm into my boxes, and see the bees using the entrance to their new home. Fun Bee Apparel: www.teespring.com/stores/guys-bees
Well thought out sir. I will be doing this soon. Thanks for the video.
I like boiled linseed oil alot. I use it on all my axe handles. I even used it on an unfinished pistol grip.....it took time and absorbed the oil like crazy. I'd say 5 or 6 coats would be good for a hive. At least that many coats judging from the way the pine soaked up polyurethane. I dis end up using polyurethane . 2 coats. That should do fine. Looks good . natural low key. the other hive is the best....it came infused inside and out in molten bees wax. That should last years
Did the slight angle effect the comb design? I have empty frames and my hive tilted and they built combs into each other
great stuff, I thinking doing something similar
Hi Guy Super dumb question but do you use your linseed oil neat or mix it with anything?
This is straight boiled linseed oil. Nothing added.
Thank you
I've heard some people mix linseed with bees wax and heat in a cauldron then dip their bee hives in the hot oil. Apparently, you get years of longevity
Yes cedar is little more expensive but it has its positves more than negatives to offset the cost. Linseed oil + cedar= decades of bee boxes.🍻🐝🍯✌🏽

I'm not posting this as some great piece of advice. It's more about sharing my first ever experience for your enjoyment.
Hi Guy. We have done this with our hives too. Its 4 years since the first coat. How often/can you re treat. We're in the UK-Wales. We prefer the natural look too. Mags and Alan Horner
Cool! Every few years if they look bad. I don’t have a set system because it’s also difficult since I don’t have a lot of extra boxes to swap in and out of circulation. I’m in the northeast US so you’re further north than I am.
How do you cut your grass
I ride it as much as I can then push as much as I can then get the weed eater.
Will it b safe during rainy season.. From the worms?
I would think so, but can’t say for sure as I’ve never had this trouble. Some people build moats around the base posts to keep certain critters out.
Love it. Exactly the answer I was looking for. Thank you!
Have they ever fallen over or been knocked over by wind or bumping into them? I have seen barnyard do that but I get some big winds and have thought they would bee knocked over with that situation!
I have not had any of these fall in wind or getting knocked over and they’ve withstood some very heavy storms that take down trees. One time I hit it with my riding lawn mower and ‘almost’ lost one hahah…but that’s just my own mindlessness.
Thanks for the video and information. I need to change to a different stand configuration and I believe this is the best and most simple and economical solution. I had already seen this setup on barnyard bees video a few moments ago and I believe your video confirms this setup as my plan. Thanks again and happy bee keeping! 🐝
Awesome! I'm so glad this was helpful to you. Happy Beekeeping!
How long has the box there been in service (how long does it hold up)? Do you reapply after x number of years? How did you apply the linseed oil (brush/roller/dip)?
Thanks for the questions. The box in the videos has I believe full years including winters. Three to four years is probably good for reapplying. Keep an eye on it like you would deck wood. I apply linseed oil with a foam brush from the hardware store.
may I suggest you use paulownia wood....it is hydrophobic and does not root. related to bamboo and very light and strong.....give it a try. www.paulowniatimber.com.au/
Other than bowing when I didn't have a cement block in the center, I have had no issues. On solid, flat ground they are perfect.
This is my beekeeping garage.
This was 5 years ago. You can tell we were green by how new the equipment is! It was a success.
