Hey! We're Bec and Sam. We're bikepackers, writers, adventure photographers and explorers. Inspired by the natural world and the people that bring it to life, we craft stories that ignite a sense of adventure and passion for the great outdoors.

Gone Bikepacking: Thailand -- The Impact of Building a Bikepacking Route
In February 2023, we co-created Thailand’s first bikepacking route with our friend Nu. Dubbed The Lanna Kingdom, it weaves riders through nearly 400 kilometres of tropical terrain, from dusty dirt roads and vibrant forest trails to banana plantations and elephant grazing grounds.
When we first released the route on bikepacking.com, we thought the it might attract 30 or 40 riders in its first season. But by early November, when the 100th completed the route, we quickly realised we had vastly underestimated its popularity.
In this film, we explore the social and ethical impact of building a bikepacking route in rural Thailand. And, how a sudden influx of tourists can affect a region and consider the importance of communication, cooperation and community in building bikepacking routes.

The Lanna Kingdom is a 333km bikepacking loop based in Northern Thailand. Starting in Chiang Mai, it weaves riders through a crocheted masterpiece of tropical terrain. From dusty dirt roads and vibrant forest trails, to banana plantations and elephant grazing grounds. Mix in delicious food, epic sunrises, gracious locals, abundant camping and unique hill tribe cultures, and it’s easy to see why...

Idolised by generations of travellers, Thailand needs little introduction. For many, “the land of smiles'' is synonymous with tropical beaches, bustling cities and full-moon parties. However, away from the tourist trappings the mountains of Northern Thailand are emerging as one of bikepackings best kept secrets. In 2019, en-route to the UK as part of our world bike tour, we cycled into Thailand...
Love the video and the vibes . From local Cnx .One day I’ll ride this awesome route
6500 over 325 okayyyyyyy lets goooooo
I rode the MHS loop, did many extra miles in and out it took me three months to have a solid look around, and still i have only just touched the surface of Northern Thailand.. I am going back to MHS to live on the river in a month.. the quality of life is incredible the people are wonderful the food is plentiful and of the highest quality all year round
Nu.. what a quality bike wizard and even more as a human..
the route looks great! i hope i be able to ride it one day. which gear ranges did you use for all the climbing? got a 38T front and 10-44T back right now.
Love the video. Been looking at Thailand for a year or two now and just recently decided to get a bike to get outdoors to improve my well-being. Getting way ahead of myself but this vid was definitely food for thought as both Chang Mai and Bangkok are in my bucket list. Until then I’ll fall back on my homemade Pad Kra Pao at home here in the UK 😊👍
Cool ride!
Nice Men take care
It´s great to see that there´s more to Northern Thailand than just Chiang Mai and the Mae Hong Son Loop. Nevertheless it´s very important to mention, that riders should check the air pollution in this region on a daily (!) basis because of the burning season. We just have been there and being outside without a mask was very harmful.
🎉❤
May ride it next year. My wife and I rode from Bangkok down to Penang Malaysia and back up. Currently in Hua Hin will train back as its HOT now and we’ve already seen the way back. We’ve been using the walking route on google maps and mapsme to find smaller paths and dirt roads as much as we can. Definitely makes for more enjoyable days even when it adds plenty of miles. We we’re already thinking about North next year. Chiang Mai to Nan probably. Just now heard about your route. Thanks and have fun out there!
Splendid project, gorgeous film!
Loved this, and the production quality on this video is SO GOOD 🤌 can't wait to ride your route one day guys!

Goosebumps!!! The message of this little doc is so important. Honestly you guys are so inspiring, you’re doing such cool stuff all the time and it’s so nice to see that you are also looking out for others around you while you do it. Great story and it’s so beautifully told also! Great job everyone involved 💛
Great video - I love the way you and Nu approached creating this bikepacking route. It also brought me back the good memories from when I toured in this beautiful (and super hilly) part of the world last year. Great to see Nu has not changed at all (yes, he is always busy!). What's next for you?
You guys are amazing your route was amazing and how your inspiration has inspired others and changed the life of the beautiful people of the Lanna Kingdom .....a huge thankyou.
First time to your channel, love the hugs given. It shows a lot ❤
Such a beautiful video. Honored to have met Sam, Bec and Nu at Triple Cycles while we were in ChiangMai before heading off to the Lanna Kingdom bikepacking journey. Met great people along the way and made some new friends, especially Ping at Tung Yung Homestay. Really love the serenity along the route and all the beautiful viewpoints @ Doi Dam and also the Royal Project Camp. Waiting for Lanna 2.0! Cheers!
Nu is such a legend. First saw him in a video back in 2018 and I'll finally be heading to Chiang Mai later this year - maybe August/Sept. Hopefully I get to ride the Lanna Kingdom while I'm there! So Stoked! Great video guys.
Loved every minute of this and the inspiration is hitting HARD! Great work team :)

My wife and I took up bike touring in our fifties and have fallen in love with it's simplicity and freedom. We're in the early stages of planning a SE Asia trip in the near future after some short trips in our local region, Victoria, Australia. Subbed...obviously!
Cool Bro!!! I have ordered a Surly Ogre and I am going who knows where! Hay Bro I am 64

Simply watching this short film is beyond inspiring; so, so well done! Can't wait to start an adventure of my own in Thailand.
Going for this end of the month!
Looking forward to more content like this!
riding a bike is like "moving meditation" is the best formulation I've heard in a long time and can best relate to, from now on my motto on STRAVA!
This was super well done! Great narrative and visual storytelling. Maybe I'll visit here one day.
Thank you very much for promoting Thailand destinations as 'Siam Smile Land'
I really like nature in Chiang Mai. I live in the capital city of Thailand. but often go to Chiang Mai And every time I go, I have a dream that I will ride a bicycle along my favorite nature path once. But right now I don't have a bike hahaha I've been following your journey. You guys are the inspiration for my work. Wish you happy travelling. And I'll save money to buy a bike and hope someday I can take a road trip like you guys. thank you guys so much

Thanks. MaybeI can plan a bikepacking trip in Chiang Mai one day.
What a beautiful film. You capture the scenery perfectly. I can feel the steepness and the roughness of the road. This is top notch.
Had to smile at the comment about the tally of Becs meltdowns, only just because I love you Becs and how you are always your authentic self and then waking up at 5am ready to go again. You are such a trooper! Loved seeing more of an insight to your life 😘
