CHRISTMAS DAY The Word Became Flesh and Dwelt Among Us December 25, 2024
CHRISTMAS DAY
The Word Became Flesh and Dwelt Among Us
December 25, 2024
AS WE GATHER
At Christmas, our lives and attention are often occupied not only
with the smaller details of the season-the decorations, the gifts,
the special menus, the schedule of events-but also with those
details of greater importance: family, parents and grandparents,
children and grandchildren, as well as those of more distant
relationships. Greater than that, as Christians we center our
celebration here in God’s presence to hear God’s Word, to attend
to what is most important, which alone can give all the other
details of life its most solid foundation. That Word puts everything
else in its proper perspective, including our place and participation
in the kingdom of God. The “big picture” includes God’s amazing
creation from the beginning, as well as our part in mankind’s fall
into sin and struggle with Satan and death. Then enters God’s
great remedy: our salvation from sin and death through the
redemption that is in God Himself, in the person of the Son of
God, Jesus Christ, our Lord. His incarnation and birth from the
virgin Mary was a great miracle-God taking on our human flesh
and blood. Greater, however, was His own sacrifice in our flesh,
by which He has cast down Satan and his lies and raised up a
new creation to new, eternal life. On this day, amid any and all
distractions and details let us refocus our lives on the one detail
that truly matters, the Christ, Jesus, comes in the flesh to be your
savior and give you life in His name.
COMMUNION STATEMENT:
For generations, The Lord’s Supper has been celebrated by men and
women coming forward in the confession and glad confidence that, just
as He says, our Lord gives into our mouths not only bread and wine but
His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and
to strengthen our union with Him and with one another (Matt; 26:26-29).
Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin,
and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as He forgives and loves us
(Matt. 18:15-35), that they may show forth His death until He comes (1
Cor. 11:26).
Because those who eat and drink our Lord’s body and blood unworthily
do great harm to themselves (1 Cor. 11:17-34), and because Holy
Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar,
any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or who hold a confession differing
from that of St. Paul Lutheran Church or from The Lutheran Church-
Missouri Synod, are asked to remain in their seats throughout the Service
of the Sacrament. If you are unsure and desire to receive our Lord Jesus
Christ in the Sacrament, please contact an elder or the pastor before the
service begins.

CHRISTMAS EVE The Song of the Angels December 24, 2024 AS WE GATHER Throughout our Advent mid-week services, we heard the humbling song Zachariah sung over His son, John the Baptist, pointing to Christ. FOURTH SUNDAY IN ADVENT December 22, 2024 AS WE GATHER The coming of God in all His unveiled power at Mount Sinai was terrifying to the people of Israel. The thundering voice of the Lord puts sinners in fear of death (Deut. 18:15-19). God, therefore, raised up a prophet like Moses-the Messiah, the Christ. God came to His people veiled in human flesh. The skies poured down the Righteous One from...

CHRISTMAS EVE Resounding Psalms for Advent: Reign December 24, 2023 + CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION + CALL TO WORSHIP/RINGING OF THE BELL PROCESSIONAL (RISE, TURN AND FACE THE CROSS IN THE BACK OF THE SANCTUARY.) HYMN OF INVOCATION LSB 368 ANGELS WE HAVE HEARD ON HIGH Text: tr. The Crown of Jesus, 1862, Part 2, London, alt. Text and tune: French Text and tune: Public domain (The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.) P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. P Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. P O almighty God, merciful Father, C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. + SERVICE OF THE WORD + GREAT O ANTIPHONS P O Wisdom, proceeding from the mouth of the Most High, pervading and permeating all creation, mightily ordering all things: C Come and teach us the way of prudence. P O Adonai and ruler of the house of Israel, who appeared to Moses in the burning bush and gave him the Law on Sinai: C Come with an outstretched arm and redeem us. P O Root of Jesse, standing as an ensign before the peoples, before whom all kings are mute, to whom the nations will do homage: C Come quickly to deliver us. P O Key of David and scepter of the house of Israel, You open and no one can close, You close and no one can open: C Come and rescue the prisoners who are in darkness and the shadow of death. P O Dayspring, splendor of light everlasting: C Come and enlighten those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death. P O King of the nations, the ruler they long for, the cornerstone uniting all people: C Come and save us all, whom You formed out of clay. P O Emmanuel, our king and our Lord, the anointed for the nations and their Savior: C Come and save us, O Lord our God. HYMN LSB 379 O COME, ALL YE FAITHFUL Text: tr. Frederick Oakeley, 1802-80, alt. Text and tune: John F. Wade, c. 1711-1786 Text and tune: Public domain SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P The Lord be with you C And with thy spirit P Let us pray. P O God, You make us glad with the yearly remembrance of the birth of Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Grant that as we joyfully receive Him as our Redeemer, we may with sure confidence behold Him when He comes to be our Judge; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. HYMN LSB 370 WHAT CHILD IS THIS Text: William C. Dix, 1837-98 Tune: English, 16th cent. Text and tune: Public domain OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 7:10-14 10Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz, 11“Ask a sign of the LORD your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.” 12But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not put the LORD to the test.” 13And he said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? 14Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. PSALM Psalm 110:1-4; antiphon: v. 2a TONE A P 1The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my | right hand,* until I make your enemies your | footstool.” C 2The LORD sends forth from Zion your mighty | scepter.* Rule in the midst of your | enemies! P 3Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy | garments;* from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth | will be yours. C 4The LORD has sworn and will not | change his mind,* “You are a priest forever after the order of Mel- | chizedek.” All: Glory be to the Father and | to the Son* and to the Holy | Spirit; as it was in the be- | ginning,* is now, and will be forever. | Amen. EPISTLE 1 John 4:7-16 7Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. 13By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA LSB 190 HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 1:18-25 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the first chapter. C Glory be to Thee, O Lord. 18Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). 24When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise be to Thee, O Christ. NICENE CREED C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY LSB 383 A GREAT AND MIGHTY WONDER SERMON P The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. C Amen. Only protestants call Frederick III "wise". He was nothing but Luther's Engels. His hate of Charles V fueled his protection of Luther so he could go against the emperor and the mediterranean influence in Germany. Both Frederick and Luther are heretics. Lutheranism was spread by the nobility who wanted the lands and riches of THE ONLY CHRISTIAN CHURCH, THE CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH. YOU ARE NOT A CHRISTIAN ,YOU ARE A PROTESTANT.

No one truly understands the achievement of St. Cyril and Method. Even historians cannot answer why they are the patrons of Europe and not that much apostles of the Slavs. I'll start with your arguments. They had baptized the Slavs in Eastern Rome - No. They are the offsprings of already christianized Slavs. They had baptized all Slavs - No. They just baptized the Moravians. A nation that went extinct with the Magyar (Hungarian) invasion. They really invented the only Christian (made by Christians) alphabet, the Glagolitic alphabet. But it never spred widely, because very impractical and was forgotten. The bulgarian people invented their own system called by Cyril and Method s scholars Cyrillic to honour them. And from Bulgaria it was introduced to half of the world. They are actually the apostles of all Europe and all modern and democratic humanity, because they fought for the right of all people to serve God in their own languages. And not only in Latin, Greek or Hebrew, like allowed by the Church in those times.

FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST The Mission and Ministry of the Seventy July 3, 2022 AS WE GATHER When Jesus sent out His followers to proclaim the Word of His kingdom to all who would listen, He assured them: “The one who hears you hears Me” (Luke 10:16). Those who responded in faith knew that the kingdom of God had come near to them and that they had been made members of the household of God. Although this sending of the seventy took place some two thousand years ago, the same reality is ours today! Jesus continues to send out His workers in order that they may preach His Word, preside over His Meal, and welcome into the household of God all who trust in Him. We are listening to Jesus Himself as His kingdom comes near to us. What peace and joy can be ours when we trust that heaven’s grace is ours to receive! We greet and welcome all guests and visitors worshiping with us today. We hope that the mes- sage you hear today will strengthen your under- standing and faith in God’s plan to save us from sin and death through Jesus Christ. If you are visiting with us for the first time, please introduce yourself to Pastor Mat or Vicar Jake. If you are without a church home, we invite you to join us here at St. Paul. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossi- ble for them. 7Come, let us go down and there confuse their lan- guage, so that they may not understand one another’s speech.” 8So the Lord dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. 9Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth. And from there the Lord dispersed them over the face of all the earth. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. SECOND READING Acts 2:1-21 1When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. 7And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya be- longing to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11both Jews and pros- elytes, Cretans and Arabians-we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.” 14But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16But this is what was uttered through the prophet Jo-el: 17 “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; 18even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. 19And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; 20the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.21And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’” A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. HOLY GOSPEL John 14:23-31 P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the fourteenth chapter. C Glory be to Thee, O Lord. 23Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me. 25“These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. 28You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, 31but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Fa- ther. Rise, let us go from here.” P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise be to Thee, O Christ. INTROIT Psalm 104:24, 27-28, 30 P Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia. O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your crea tures. These all look to you, to give them their food in due season. When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are f filled with good things. When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground. Sung Glory be to the Father by All: and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia.

LSB 203 P Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. P If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? C But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. P Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. CONFESSION OF SINS LSB 203 C Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. ABSOLUTION LSB 203 P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen upon me. But I call to God, and the LORD will save me. C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. KYRIE LSB 204 GLORIA IN EXCELSIS LSB 204 SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. O God, the giver of all that is good, by Your holy inspiration grant that we may think those things that are right and by Your merciful guiding accomplish them; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. FIRST READING Acts 16:9-15 9A vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them. 11So, setting sail from Troas, we made a direct voyage to Samothrace, and the following day to Neapolis, 12and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city some days. 13And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to the riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together. 14One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul. 15And after she was baptized, and her household as well, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” And she prevailed upon us. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. PSALM Psalm 67; antiphon: v. 3 P 1May God be gracious to us and | bless us* and make his face to shine up- | on us, C 2 that your way may be | known on earth,* your saving power among all | nations. P 3Let the peoples praise you, | O God;* let all the peoples | praise you! C 4Let the nations be glad and | sing for joy,* for you judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations up- | on earth. P 5Let the peoples praise you, | O God;* let all the peoples | praise you! C 6The earth has yielded its | increase;* God, our God, shall | bless us. P 7God shall | bless us;* let all the ends of the earth | fear him! All: Glory be to the Father and | to the Son* and to the Holy | Spirit; as it was in the be- | ginning,* is now, and will be forever. | Amen. EPISTLE Revelation 21:9-14, 21-27 9Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, 11having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed- 13on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. 14And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. . . . 21And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, transparent as glass. 22And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. 23And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, 25and its gates will never be shut by day-and there will be no night there. 26They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. 27But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA LSB 205 VERSE LSB 205 ALLELUIA LSB 205 HOLY GOSPEL John 16:23-33 P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the sixteenth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. 23[Jesus said:] “In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. 24Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. 25“I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.” 29His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! 30Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.” 31Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. APOSTLES’ CREED C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. FIRST READING Acts 11:1-18 1Now the apostles and the brothers who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. 2So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcision party criticized him, saying, 3 “You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them.” 4But Peter began and explained it to them in order: 5 “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision, something like a great sheet descending, being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to me. 6Looking at it closely, I observed animals and beasts of prey and reptiles and birds of the air. 7And I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Rise, Peter; kill and eat.’ 8But I said, ‘By no means, Lord; for nothing common or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ 9But the voice answered a second time from heaven, ‘What God has made clean, do not call common.’ 10This happened three times, and all was drawn up again into heaven. 11And behold, at that very moment three men arrived at the house in which we were, sent to me from Caesarea. 12And the Spirit told me to go with them, making no distinction. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered the man’s house. 13And he told us how he had seen the angel stand in his house and say, ‘Send to Joppa and bring Simon who is called Peter; 14he will declare to you a message by which you will be saved, you and all your household.’ 15As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning. 16And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ 17If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?” 18When they heard these things they fell silent. And they glorified God, saying, “Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life.” A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. CONFIRMATION HYMN Sung twice: First time: Confirmands Second time: Congregation LSB 422 “ON MY HEART IMPRINT YOUR IMAGE” EPISTLE Revelation 21:1-7 1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 4He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” 5And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. 7The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.” A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA LSB 205 VERSE LSB 205 ALLELUIA LSB 205 HOLY GOSPEL John 16:12-22 P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the sixteenth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. 12[Jesus said:] “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 16“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.” 17So some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” 18So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.” 19Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.” P This is the Gospel of the Lord. (Sit) FIRST READING Acts 20:17-35 17Now from Miletus [Paul] sent to Ephesus and called the elders of the church to come to him. 18And when they came to him, he said to them: “You yourselves know how I lived among you the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia, 19serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials that happened to me through the plots of the Jews; 20how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you in public and from house to house, 21testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. 22And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, constrained by the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there, 23except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and afflictions await me. 24But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. 25And now, behold, I know that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face again. 26Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all of you, 27for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. 28Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. 29I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; 30and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. 31Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish everyone with tears. 32And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33I coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel. 34You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities and to those who were with me. 35In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” A This is the Word of the Lord. EPISTLE Revelation 7:9-17 9After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.” 13Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?” 14I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15“Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. 16They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. 17For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” A This is the Word of the Lord. If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” 25Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name bear witness about me, 26but you do not believe because you are not part of my flock. 27My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30I and the Father are one.” P This is the Gospel of the Lord. EPISTLE Revelation 5:1-14 1Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. 2And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” 3And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, 4and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. 5And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.” 6And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. 8And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, 10and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.” 11Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” 13And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!” 14And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” and the elders fell down and worshiped. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA AND VERSE HOLY GOSPEL John 21:1-19 P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the twenty-first chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. 1After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4 Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” 6 He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. 7 That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea. 8 The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards[a] off. 9 When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. 14 This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. 15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. 18 Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” 19 (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.” P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ.

C Amen. FIRST READING Acts 9:1-22 1But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. 3Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4And falling to the ground he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” 5And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 6But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.” 7The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but seeing no one. 8Saul rose from the ground, and although his eyes were opened, he saw nothing. So they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. 9And for three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank. 10Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.” 11And the Lord said to him, “Rise and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul, for behold, he is praying, 12and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.” 13But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints at Jerusalem. 14And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name.” 15But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. 16For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.” 17So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he rose and was baptized; 19and taking food, he was strengthened. For some days he was with the disciples at Damascus. 20And immediately he proclaimed Jesus in the synagogues, saying, “He is the Son of God.” 21And all who heard him were amazed and said, “Is not this the man who made havoc in Jerusalem of those who called upon this name? And has he not come here for this purpose, to bring them bound before the chief priests?” 22But Saul increased all the more in strength, and confounded the Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that Jesus was the Christ. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

CREED APOSTLES’ CREED C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. Amen. And they were all together in Solomon’s Portico. 13None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem. 14And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, 15so that they even carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. 16The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed. 17But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousy 18they arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison. 19But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, 20“Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life.” A This is the Word of the Lord. EPISTLE Revelation 1:4-18 4John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, 5and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood 6andmade us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 7Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen. 8“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” 9I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance that are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet 11saying, “Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.” 12Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, 13and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. 14The hairs of his head were white like wool, as white as snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, 15his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. 16In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength. 17When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, 18and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. (Stand) ALLELUIA AND VERSE HOLY GOSPEL John 20:19-31 P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the twentieth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. 19On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” 22And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive the sins of anyone, they are forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness from anyone, it is withheld.” 24Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” 26Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” 30Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ.

Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the universe. You have poured out upon us Your never-ending love by giving Your Son, Jesus Christ, into death for us. Nourish Your Church through the Sacrament of His body and blood. Strengthen us so that we may continue to proclaim Him who gives life to the world; for He lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. People: Amen. STRIPPING OF THE ALTAR Psalm 22 Pastor This is the night in which our Lord was betrayed. After He had instituted the Sacrament of His body and blood, He and the eleven disciples went out to the Garden of Gethsemane, where He knew Judas would come to set in motion the events leading to His crucifixion. All the appointments in the chancel are symbols related to our Lord, the light of the world, the Word of God in the flesh, the covering for our sins, and so on. This evening they are stripped from the altar-which represents Jesus Himself-just as He was struck, humiliated, tortured, and taken to the cross. As the various items are removed, we speak together the words of Psalm 22, which anticipated our Lord’s Passion. We then depart until our worship continues tomorrow. Pastor: 1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? People: 2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest. Pastor: 3 Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. 4 In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them. People: 5 To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame. Pastor: 6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. People: 7 All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; Pastor: 8 “He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him! People: 9 Yet you are he who took me from the womb; you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts. Pastor: 10 On you was I cast from my birth, and from my mother’s womb you have been my God. People: 11 Be not far from me, for trouble is near and there is none to help. Pastor: 12 Many bulls encompass me; strong bulls of Bashan surround me; People: 13 they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion. Pastor: 14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; People: 15 my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death. People: 16 For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet People: 17 I can count all my bones they stare and gloat over me; Pastor: 18 they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. People: 19 But you, O Lord, do not be far off! O you my help, come quickly to my aid! Pastor: 20 Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dog! People: 21Save me from the mouth of the lion! You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen! Pastor: 22 I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you: People: 23 You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel! Pastor: 24 For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him. People: 25 From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will perform before those who fear him. Pastor: 26 The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord! May your hearts live forever! People: 27 All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the Nations shall worship before you.  PREPARATION  HYMN “O Lord, We Praise Thee” LSB 617 INVOCATION Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. OPENING SENTENCES Psalm 43:4; 124:8 Pastor: I will go to the altar of God, People: to God, my exceeding joy. Pastor: Our help is in the name of the Lord, People: who made heaven and earth. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, People: for with the Lord is plenteous redemption and the forgiveness of all our sins. Pastor: Let us then confess our sins unto our gracious Lord. People: Almighty God, Father of our Lord, Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all people, we admit and confess our sinfulness. We have turned away from one another in our thinking, speaking, and doing. We have done the evil You forbid and have not done the good You demand. We do repent and are truly sorry for these our sins. Have mercy on us, kind Father, because of the obedience of our brother, Jesus Christ, Your Son. Forgive us all that is past and with the power of the Holy Spirit, move us to serve You faithfully. Set our feet upon the new path of life, and build Your kingdom here through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Pastor: God has promised forgiveness of sins to those who repent and turn to Him. In His stead and by His command, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. Pastor: God keep you in His grace by the Holy Spirit, lead you to greater faith and obedience, and bring you to live with Him forever, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. People: Amen. HYMN “The Infant Priest Was Holy Born” LSB 624  WORD  PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: O Lord, in this wondrous Sacrament You have left us a remembrance of Your passion. Grant that we may so receive the sacred mystery of Your body and blood that the fruits of Your redemption may continually be manifest in us; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. People: Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING Jeremiah 31:31-34 (The Lord promises a new covenant.) 31“Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the LORD. 33But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.” Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. RESPONSORY “What Shall I Render to the Lord?” EPISTLE Hebrews 10:15-25 (Jesus is our great High Priest.) 15And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, 16“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,” 17then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” 18Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.19Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. HYMN “Not All the Blood of Beasts” LSB 431 HOLY GOSPEL Luke 22:7-20 (The Lord’s Supper is instituted by Jesus.) Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twenty- second chapter. People: Glory to You, O Lord. 7Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.” 9They said to him, “Where will you have us prepare it?” 10He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters 11and tell the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12And he will show you a large upper room furnished; prepare it there.” 13And they went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover. 14And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. 15And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 18For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, O Christ. HYMN “Here, O My Lord, I See Thee Face to Face” LSB 631 SERMON CREED Nicene Creed People: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life  of the world to come. Amen.

2 of 3 VERSE Philippians 2:8b People: He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. HOLY GOSPEL John 12:20-43 (Jesus speaks of the death by which He will die.) Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the twelfth chapter People: Glory to You, O Lord. 20Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. 21So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. 27“Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. 28Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” 30Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine. 31Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. 32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” 33He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die. 34So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” 35So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. 37Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, 38so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Lord, who has believed what he heard from us, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” 39Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said, 40“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.” 41Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him. 42Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; 43for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God. Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, O Christ. HYMN LSB 441 RIDE ON, RIDE ON IN MAJESTY SERMON CREED Apostles’ Creed People: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. Joined together in the name of our Lord and in the communion of saints, we pray You to send Your Holy Spirit upon us to sanctify and renew us in body and soul for the sake of Your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. People: Amen. THE WORDS OF OUR LORD Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24; Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-25 Pastor: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My  body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My  blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

RINGING OF THE BELLS/CALL TO WORSHIP INVOCATION Pastor: The grace of our Lord  Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. People: Amen. Pastor: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. People: Hosanna to the Son of David. COLLECT Pastor: Let us pray. Most merciful God, as the people of Jerusalem, with palms in their hands, gathered to greet Your dearly beloved Son when He came into His Holy City, grant that we may ever hail Him as our King and, when He comes again, may go forth to meet Him with trusting and steadfast hearts and follow Him in the way that leads to eternal life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. People: Amen. PROCESSIONAL GOSPEL John 12:12-19 (The triumphal entry) Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the twelfth chapter. People: Glory to You, O Lord. 12The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” 14And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, 15“Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!” 16His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. 17The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. 18The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. 19So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.” Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, O Christ. Pastor: Let us go forth in peace, People: in the name of the Lord. HYMN LSB 442 ALL GLORY, LAUD, AND HONOR When all have arrived at their places, the people may raise their branches as the procession concludes with the following: Pastor: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. People: Hosanna in the highest. OPENING SENTENCES Pastor: All hail to Jesus, the King of our lives! Lift up your hearts and rejoice in Him! People: He came from the very throne of God, but He gave that up to suffer a criminal’s death on the cross. Pastor: But God raised Him up that the ends of the earth may bow before Him as their King! People: Jesus Christ is Lord! Hosanna! Pastor: In Him is forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. People: Have mercy on us, Lord! Bless us with Your peace! Hosanna! Hosanna!  PREPARATION  CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION 1 Thessalonians 5:23 Pastor: Let us now make confession of our sins to God, our gracious, heavenly Father. O God, in Your mercy, forgive our sin and renew Your Spirit within us that we may joyfully follow Your will and gladly obey Your commandments. For the sake of Jesus, our Lord, forgive our sins and direct us in ways of compassion and love. Pastor: In the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit. PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, You sent Your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, to take upon Himself our flesh and to suffer death upon the cross. Mercifully grant that we may follow the example of His great humility and patience and be made partakers of His resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. People: Amen. HYMN LSB 443 HOSANNA, LOUD HOSANNA  WORD  OLD TESTAMENT READING Deuteronomy 32:36-39 (The Lord will vindicate His people.) 36 The LORD will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants, when he sees that their power is gone and there is none remaining, bond or free. 37Then he will say, “Where are their gods, the rock in which they took refuge, 38who ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their drink offering? Let them rise up and help you; let them be your protection!” 39“See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand.” Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. PSALM Psalm 118:19-29 People: Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the LORD. Women: This is the gate of the LORD; the righteous shall enter through it. Men: I thank You that You have answered me and have become my salvation. People: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is the LORD’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. Women: This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Men: Save us, we pray, O LORD! O LORD, we pray, give us success! People: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD! We bless you from the house of the LORD. Women: The LORD is God, and He has made His light to shine upon us. Men: Bind the festal sacrifice with cords, up to the horns of the altar! Women: You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; You are my God; I will extol You. Men: Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; for His steadfast love endures forever! People: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. EPISTLE Philippians 2:5-11 (Christ poured Himself out in death for His people.) 5Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

HYMN “My Song Is Love Unknown” (LSB 430) + READINGS + FIRST READING Isaiah 43:16-21 P The Old Testament Reading is from Isaiah, the forty-third chapter. 16Thus says the LORD, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, 17who brings forth chariot and horse, army and warrior; they lie down, they cannot rise, they are extinguished, quenched like a wick: 18“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. 19Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. 20The wild beasts will honor Me, the jackals and the ostriches, for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to My chosen people, 21the people whom I formed for Myself that they might declare My praise.” P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. SECOND READING 2 Corinthians 5:14-19 14For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15and He died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for Him who for their sake died and was raised. 16From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard Him thus no longer. 17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to Himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. THIRD READING John 19:38-42 P A reading from St. John, the nineteenth chapter. 38After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away His body. 39Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy- five pounds in weight. 40So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there. P O Lord, have mercy on us. C Thanks be to God. LENT RESPONSORY LSB, p. 231 P Deliver me, O Lord, my God, for You are the God of my salvation. C Rescue me from my enemies, protect me from those who rise against me. P In You, O Lord, do I put my trust, leave me not, O Lord, my God. C Rescue me from my enemies, protect me from those who rise against me. P Deliver me, O Lord, my God, for You are the God of my salvation. C Rescue me from my enemies, protect me from those who rise against me. OFFICE HYMN “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” (LSB 425) SERMON

HYMN TO DEPART LSB 571 “GOD LOVED THE WORLD SO THAT HE GAVE” CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENTS COVID UPDATE Please remember if you have a cough, fever, or are not feeling well, please stay home and worship with us online. We will be adjusting our worship in the following areas: ✓ We will use pew hymnals and make fully printed bulletins available ✓ The Common Cup will return to the communion service along with the individual cups. If you have questions on this practice, please connect with Pastor Mat or Vicar Jake ✓ Communion will be at the rail around the altar ✓ Offerings will be collected in the narthex ✓ We will continue to monitor Franklin County Health Department in the event we need to make changes. HOLY WEEK SERVICES We will have Compline services Monday-Wednesday during Holy Week (April 11th-13th) at 7pm. Compline is a service of prayer at the close of the day where we pray, sing and meditate on God’s word. For these three services we will read the crucifixion account from one of the three Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. Holy Week is one of, if not, the most sacred week in the Church year because it reminds us of God sending his son to die for our sins and how the fullness of God’s love is shown in that. Therefore, we spend “extra” time this week meditating on God demonstrating His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 43:16-21 16Thus says the LORD, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, 17who brings forth chariot and horse, army and warrior; they lie down, they cannot rise, they are extinguished, quenched like a wick: 18“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. 19Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. 20The wild beasts will honor me, the jackals and the ostriches, for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, 21the people whom I formed for myself that they might declare my praise. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. EPISTLE Philippians 3:8-14 8Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith- 10that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. 12Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. (Stand) CHOIR/BELLS LSB #543 “WHAT WONDROUS LOVE” LENTEN VERSE L In many and various ways, God spoke to His people of old by the prophets. C But now in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son. HOLY GOSPEL Luke 20:9-20 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twentieth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. 9And he began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and let it out to tenants and went into another country for a long while. 10When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants, so that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11And he sent another servant. But they also beat and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12And he sent yet a third. This one also they wounded and cast out. 13Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.’ 14But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir. Let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.’ 15And they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” When they heard this, they said, “Surely not!” 17But he looked directly at them and said, “What then is this that is written: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’? 18“Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.” 19The scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him at that very hour, for they perceived that he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people. 20So they watched him and sent spies, who pretended to be sincere, that they might catch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. Amen. MIDWEEK OF LENT 4 PETER Simon Peter witnessed much of Christ’s ministry on earth. He is featured in many highlights of the four Gospels, but today we see Peter at his lowest point, as he denies Jesus three times. The result of Peter’s denial is a massive amount of guilt. Each of us can relate to that unwanted flood of self-disgust that comes when we remember past sin. But guilt is not the final word for Peter, and it is not the final word for us. After His resurrection, Jesus restores and forgives Peter. Jesus offered Peter grace. Jesus also gives us grace, forgiveness, and restoration at the cross. OPENING SENTENCES LSB, p. 229 P O Lord, open my lips, C and my mouth will declare Your praise. P Make haste, O God, to deliver me; C make haste to help me, O Lord. C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. C Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the LORD. P This is the gate of the LORD; the righteous shall enter through it. C I thank You that you have answered me and have become my salvation. P The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. C This is the LORD’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. P This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. C Save us, we pray, O LORD! O LORD, we pray, give us success! P Blessèd is he who comes in the name of the LORD! We bless you from the house of the LORD. C The LORD is God, and He has made His light to shine upon us. P Bind the festal sacrifice with cords, up to the horns of the altar! C You are my God, and I will give thanks to You; You are my God; I will extol You. P Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever! HYMN “By All Your Saints in Warfare” (LSB 517:1, 10, 3) + READINGS + READING Zechariah 12:10-14 P A reading from Zechariah, the twelfth chapter. 10“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on Me, on Him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over Him, as one weeps over a firstborn. 11On that day the mourning in Jerusalem will be as great as the mourning for Hadad-rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. 12The land shall mourn, each family by itself: the family of the house of David by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself, and their wives by themselves; 13the family of the house of Levi by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the Shimeites by itself, and their wives by themselves; 14and all the families that are left, each by itself, and their wives by themselves.” P O Lord, have mercy on us. C Thanks be to God. READING 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 P A reading from Second Corinthians, the twelfth chapter. 7So to keep me from being too elated by the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. 8Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. 9But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. P O Lord, have mercy on us. C Thanks be to God. READING John 18:12-27 P A reading from St. John, the eighteenth chapter. 12So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. 13First they led Him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people. 15Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest, 16but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in. 17The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” 18Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself. 19The high priest then questioned Jesus about His disciples and His teaching. 20Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret. 21Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them; they know what I said.” 22When He had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how You answer the high priest?” 23Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike Me?” 24Annas then sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. 25Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of His disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” 26One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 27Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed. P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. + SERVICE OF THE WORD + KYRIE LSB 204 SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, Your mercies are new every morning; and though we deserve only punishment, You receive us as Your children and provide for all our needs of body and soul. Grant that we may heartily acknowledge Your merciful goodness, give thanks for all Your benefits, and serve You in willing obedience; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 12:1-6 1You will say in that day: “I will give thanks to you, O LORD, for though you were angry with me, your anger turned away, that you might comfort me. 2“Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the LORD GOD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.” 3With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. 4And you will say in that day: “Give thanks to the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the peoples, proclaim that his name is exalted. 5“Sing praises to the LORD, for he has done gloriously; let this be made known in all the earth. 6Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.” A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. PSALM Psalm 32 P 1Blessèd is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. C 2Blessèd is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. P 3For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. C 4For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.P 5 I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. C 6Therefore let everyone who is godly offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found; surely in the rush of great waters, they shall not reach him. P 7You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance. C 8I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. P 9Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you. C 10Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD. P 11Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart! All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. EPISTLE 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 16From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. 20Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. (Stand) LENTEN VERSE L In many and various ways, God spoke to His people of old by the prophets. C But now in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son. HOLY GOSPEL Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the fifteenth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. 1Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear [Jesus]. 2And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.” 3So he told them this parable: 11And he said, “There was a man who had two sons. 12And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them. 13Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. 14And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. 15So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. 16And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything. 17“But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! 18I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. 19I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”’ 20And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. 21And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. 23And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. 24For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate. 25“Now his older son was in the field, and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26And he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. 27And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound.’ 28But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, 29but he answered his father, ‘Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends. 30But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!’ 31And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. 32It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.’” P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. Amen.

MIDWEEK OF LENT 3 BARABBAS Barabbas was a heartless, brutal criminal with anger in his heart and blood on his hands. Custom dictated that Pontius Pilate should release one prisoner at the feast of Passover. Pilate knows Jesus is innocent and tries to get the crowd to ask for Jesus’ release, but the crowd calls instead for Barabbas. The crowd condemns the innocent Jesus and demands that the guilty Barabbas receive a pardon. We are Barabbas. We are guilty and sinful and deserving of death. But we are also Barabbas in that Jesus takes our place, takes our punishment, and sets us free. Amen. Praise to You, O Christ, Lamb of our salvation. + PSALMODY + PSALM Psalm 57; antiphon: v. 10 P For Your steadfast love is great to the heavens, Your faithfulness to the clouds. C Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in You my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of Your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by. P I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills His purpose for me. C He will send from heaven and save me; He will put to shame him who tramples on me. God will send out His steadfast love and His faithfulness! P My soul is in the midst of lions; I lie down amid fiery beasts-the children of man, whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords. C Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let Your glory be over all the earth! P They set a net for my steps; my soul was bowed down. They dug a pit in my way, but they have fallen into it themselves. C My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast! I will sing and make melody! P Awake, my glory! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn! C I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to You among the nations. P For Your steadfast love is great to the heavens, Your faithfulness to the clouds. C Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let Your glory be over all the earth! All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P For Your steadfast love is great to the heavens, Your faithfulness to the clouds. Silence for reflection PSALM PRAYER P Merciful Lord, You are our refuge in time of trouble and our hope in distress. Keep us in Your care that we may be raised from the death of sin to life in Christ and give faithful witness to Your mercy by proclaiming Your name and Your salvation to the nations; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. HYMN “Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted” (LSB 451) + READINGS + READING Zechariah 9:11-12 P A reading from Zechariah, the ninth chapter. 11As for you also, because of the blood of My covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. 12Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double. P O Lord, have mercy on us. C Thanks be to God. READING 2 Corinthians 3:15-18 P A reading from Second Corinthians, the third chapter. 15Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. 16But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. 17Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. P O Lord, have mercy on us. C Thanks be to God. READING John 18:33-40 P A reading from St. John, the eighteenth chapter. 33So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” 34Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about Me?” 35Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You over to me. What have You done?” 36Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But My kingdom is not from the world.” 37Then Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world-to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.” 38Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in Him. 39But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” 40They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber. P O Lord, have mercy on us. C Thanks be to God. LENT RESPONSORY LSB, p. 231 P Deliver me, O Lord, my God, for You are the God of my salvation. C Rescue me from my enemies, protect me from those who rise against me. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH (After each petition, the following is said:) P Lord in your mercy, C Hear our prayer. + SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT + (Stand) PREFACE LSB 208 P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give Him thanks and praise. P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, for the countless blessings You so freely bestow on us and all creation. Above all, we give thanks for Your boundless love shown to us when You sent Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: SANCTUS LSB 208 PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING P Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. At Your command, Abraham prepared to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice on the mountain; yet, in mercy You provided a ram as a substitute. We give You thanks that on Calvary You spared not Your only Son but sent Him to offer His life as a ransom for many. As we eat and drink His body and blood, grant us, like Abraham our father, to trust in Your promise now fulfilled in Christ, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us: LORD’S PRAYER C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. THE WORDS OF OUR LORD P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” PAX DOMINI P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C Amen. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. 8 If I say to the wicked, O wicked one, you shall surely die, and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, that wicked person shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. 9But if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, that person shall die in his iniquity, but you will have delivered your soul. 10“And you, son of man, say to the house of Israel, Thus have you said: ‘Surely our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and we rot away because of them. How then can we live?’ 11Say to them, As I live, declares the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel? 12“And you, son of man, say to your people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him when he transgresses, and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall by it when he turns from his wickedness, and the righteous shall not be able to live by his righteousness when he sins. 13Though I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, yet if he trusts in his righteousness and does injustice, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered, but in his injustice that he has done he shall die. 14Again, though I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ yet if he turns from his sin and does what is just and right, 15if the wicked restores the pledge, gives back what he has taken by robbery, and walks in the statutes of life, not doing injustice, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 16None of the sins that he has committed shall be remembered against him. He has done what is just and right; he shall surely live. 17“Yet your people say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just,’ when it is their own way that is not just. 18When the righteous turns from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it. 19And when the wicked turns from his wickedness and does what is just and right, he shall live by them. 20Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ O house of Israel, I will judge each of you according to his ways.” A This is the Word of the Lord. EPISTLE 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 1 I want you to know, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3and all ate the same spiritual food, 4and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. 5Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 6Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. 7Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” 8We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. 9We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, 10nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. 11Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. 12Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. 13No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. C Glory to You, O Lord. 1There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? 3No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. 4Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? 5No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” 6And he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. 7And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?’ 8And he answered him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. 9Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’” P This is the Gospel of the Lord. + CANTICLE + ANTIPHON LSB, p. 231 P Let my prayer rise before You as incense, C and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. MAGNIFICAT LSB, p. 231 C My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior; for He has regarded the lowliness of His handmaiden. For behold, from this day all generations will call me blessed. For the Mighty One has done great things to me, and holy is His name; and His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones and has exalted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent empty away. He has helped His servant Israel in remembrance of His mercy as He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed forever. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Hear us [especially for . . . and] for all in need; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. P Lord Jesus, though ruthless Pontius Pilate declared Your innocence before the crowds, You who knew no sin became sin for us. Grant that the shame You bore for us on the cross give us the greatest honor so that we might always see that only in suffering can we behold who You truly are, our glorious King and Savior; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. MIDWEEK OF LENT 2 OPENING SENTENCES LSB, p. 229 P O Lord, open my lips, C and my mouth will declare Your praise. P Make haste, O God, to deliver me; C make haste to help me, O Lord. C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Praise to You, O Christ, Lamb of our salvation. + PSALMODY + PSALM Psalm 109:1-7, 20-31; antiphon: v. 26 P Help me, O LORD my God! Save me according to Your steadfast love! C Be not silent, O God of my praise! P For wicked and deceitful mouths are opened against me, speaking against me with lying tongues. C They encircle me with words of hate, and attack me without cause. P In return for my love they accuse me, but I give myself to prayer. C So they reward me evil for good, and hatred for my love. P Appoint a wicked man against him; let an accuser stand at his right hand. C When he is tried, let him come forth guilty; let his prayer be counted as sin! P May this be the reward of my accusers from the LORD, of those who speak evil against my life! C But You, O GOD my Lord, deal on my behalf for Your name’s sake; because Your steadfast love is good, deliver me! P For I am poor and needy, and my heart is stricken within me. C I am gone like a shadow at evening; I am shaken off like a locust. P My knees are weak through fasting; my body has become gaunt, with no fat. C I am an object of scorn to my accusers; when they see me, they wag their heads. P Help me, O LORD my God! Save me according to Your steadfast love! C Let them know that this is Your hand; You, O LORD, have done it! P Let them curse, but You will bless! They arise and are put to shame, but Your servant will be glad! C May my accusers be clothed with dishonor; may they be wrapped in their own shame as in a cloak! P With my mouth I will give great thanks to the LORD; I will praise Him in the midst of the throng. C For He stands at the right hand of the needy, to save him from those who condemn his soul to death. All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P Help me, O LORD my God! Save me according to Your steadfast love! Silence for reflection PSALM PRAYER P O God of steadfast love and mercy, on the cross Your Son forgave His enemies. Turn our hearts from hatred and evil that we may forgive the offenses of those who seek our harm and forgive as we have been forgiven. Rescue us in our time of peril and deliver us from bitterness and resentment; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C Amen. HYMN “Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted” (LSB 451) + READINGS + READING Ezekiel 11:17-21 P A reading from Ezekiel, the eleventh chapter. 17 “Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: I will gather you from the peoples and assemble you out of the countries where you have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.’ 18And when they come there, they will remove from it all its detestable things and all its abominations. 19And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, 20that they may walk in My statutes and keep My rules and obey them. And they shall be My people, and I will be their God. 21But as for those whose heart goes after their detestable things and their abominations, I will bring their deeds upon their own heads, declares the Lord GOD.” P O Lord, have mercy on us. C Thanks be to God. READING 2 Corinthians 4:1-6 P A reading from Second Corinthians, the fourth chapter. 1Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. 2But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. 3And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing. 4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. P O Lord, have mercy on us. C Thanks be to God. READING John 19:1-16 P A reading from St. John, the nineteenth chapter. 1Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged Him. 2And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head and arrayed Him in a purple robe. 3They came up to Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck Him with their hands. 4Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing Him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in Him.” 5So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” 6When the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him.” 7The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law He ought to die because He has made Himself the Son of God.” 8When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid. 9He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. 10So Pilate said to Him, “You will not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You and authority to crucify You?” 11Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over Me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered Me over to you has the greater sin.” 12From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” 13So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha. 14Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” 15They cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” 16So he delivered Him over to them to be crucified. OFFICE HYMN “No Tramp of Soldiers’ Marching Feet” #444 SERMON

Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: SANCTUS LSB 161 THE WORDS OF OUR LORD P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. P O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: LORD’S PRAYER C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
