Hello from New Zealand. Im loving your podcast. Very interesting. The Porty pullover is on my to do list, I've got my yarn ready, just needing more time to knit everything 😂
Thank you for starting this series! I just started to look up your patterns, and was so pleased to be find this. Wonderful to learn about your Riggies designs! That Riggies cowl with the contrast center and edge is amazing.
can you please tell me what the micron count range of the 100% Shetland Jameson is, and is it woolen or worsted spun? The DK. and Spindrift yarns.
Taken from the Shetland Sheep Society website: "Shetland wool fibres are of a simple construction with a central cortex covered by a thin scaly cuticle, and have an average diameter of about 23 microns. However there is a range from 10 to 20 microns for neck and shoulder wool to 25 to 35 microns for britch wool." And both Spindrift and Dk are woolen spun which I talk about in this video :)
Great podcast , very informative 😊
Thank you for doing this! I want to visit Shetland!!!! Hello from Truckee
Hi in Truckee! Love that area!
Hello from Canada 👋 I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the original Shetland sheep and had no idea they were essentially wild! So intriguing! Your new mitten pattern and colour palette are beautiful 😍 Thanks for the lovely video Gudrun 🤗
Thanks so much! I am loving the colour palette too!
Great video thanks. I used to knit Fairisle when I was at school and haven’t done it for so long (although I’m still knitting lots). You’ve given me the incentive to do some more I also have lots of original Shetland lace weight shawl patterns that my aunt gave me but I’ve always been a little daunted about the pinning out at the end. Some information about blocking and pinning out would be great please. Thanks again, great viewing.
Yes great idea!
Omg I love your podcast. It was so informative. I enjoy seeing what you’re wearing, knitting and all your yarn. When you said who your author husband was I immediately went good reads to look at his books put them down as “want to read”. Now I have the information and have to do a book store run.
Thanks! I hope you enjoy his books!
So happy to meet you here👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎉I am watching from Danmark ❤
The nerdy part of me is loving this more informative format of podcast. This was really missing in the youtube community ❤ live how you explain things
Glad to hear I can fill a gap!
Hi Gudrun, please yes, go with the vest update for the Audrey in Unst pattern, I love it so much! This is one of my favorite pattern from the beginning, and a vest is really lovely to wear on laundered linen check dresses, especially in spring and autumn which I wear often. It’s incredible how time fly, there was 12 years and a half ago we meet in Italy for the Squam workshop, and your explanation on short rows was brilliant and easy to follow so, that’s a hint for some refresh on that as a tutorial here on youtube maybe. Thank you so much for starting a channel, it’s nice to have the chance to interact with someone I admire for a long time. Xoxo. Giusy in Italy
Hello Giusy! So lovely to hear from you. What fond memories I have of that retreat! x
The Trin- Annelie hat is beautiful! Fancy some burnt ochre making an appearance! Can’t wait to see your new design (no pressure, plenty to work on here)!❤❤
Well I'm excited about the new design so I'll be busy working away on it!
Are the Shetland Ponies also there and harvest of their think beautiful winter coats? 🐎
Yes lots of Shetland ponies in Shetland!
So nice to have you join the TH-cam vloggers! I've subscribed and look forward to your next post.
Thank you! I'm really enjoying the experience so far!
I love your podcast! I'm knitting your Shetland Solstice hat pattern and the colors are so beautiful! I'm excited to learn more about Shetland wool.
I’ve had Audrey in Unst on my list to knit for a while. A vest version sounds great! I’ve been into vests lately.
Yes me too! Very useful and adaptable I think!
I'm very much looking forward to learning more about colour work knitting from one who obviously knows so much! Thanks for podcasting.
Thank you!
I like the sewing patterns from 100 Acts Of Sewing (Sonya Philip). I particularly like Dress No. 1 and wear it like a jumper. Works up well with linen fabric.
She very generously gifted me her book at Rhinebeck!
Hello from Tasmania, Australia 🇦🇺 I’ve enjoyed your first 2 episodes greatly Gudrun and love doing colour work 😊 I have the book you released last year with Mary Jane and love it ❤ several projects I’d love to make in there !
Thank you! I hope you enjoy making those projects!
Another great video! Thank you for sharing the video from at the mill! So cool to see the entire process. I was sad I didn't make it there when I was in Shetland and watching that was the next best thing. ☺️
Yay! Glad you got to see that Anne! I hope to do my own one sometime! Next time I'm over!
I do love your Porty as a vest-like top. I've been so drawn to vests lately, often more versatile for me than a sweater. My last three garments for myself were vests or a cap-sleeved top that I wear layered over a long sleeved tee this time of year. So glad you're sharing your knitting and more about Jameson's here.
Thanks!
I love your podcast: the content, the way you present it and also appreciate the length of the podcast! I have just discovered it (through the recommendation of "Ruth loves to knit") and have subscribed immediately. I am very much looking forward to your episodes and wish you all the best and good luck for your channel.
Wonderful podcast! I have been in need of a new cast on and you inspired me to dig into my Jamieson's stash! Quick question...what is the pattern of the sweater behind you in the video?
Oh that is a vintage child's sweater that my mum had created back in the 1970s (from an old sweater that was in the Shetland museum). No pattern for it but Mary Jane Mucklestone has a cowl pattern using the same shades/motifs. I will talk more about it in another episode!
@theshetlandtrader looking forward to it!
Gudrun, I've been a fan of yours for about six years now, thanks to discovering woolly wool and Jamieson's of Shetland Spindrift via The Woolly Thistle in West Lebanon, New Hampshire. I'm so happy you've started Shetland Trader Chats! Colorwork is my favorite knitting. I've knit both the Porty Pullover which I just happen to be wearing today, and I also have knit the Porty Cardigan. One of my sisters would like a Porty Pullover which I'll knit for her this year. I love knitting your Porty patterns. Among my all-time favorite patterns and FOs! Many thanks for Shetland Trader Chats. I'm definitely a fan!
Thanks for your support! Porty is addictive! Always fun to see it in a new colorway!
Thank you, such an interesting episode and hearing more about Shetland sheep and their wool. Very excited you created this podcast and looking forward to learning more from you ❤❤❤❤Kathy also from Massachusetts
Thank you!
So good! You've got my vote for Best Vlog to Knit To! Loved the sneak peak behind the scenes in Gudrun-land. Also, I've got the Riggies Cardi at the top of my queue and now I'm definitely going to get busy swatching and casting on today!
Continuing on (same day as I saw your first), I want to say well done! These videos are labor-intensive, aren’t they, with advance prep and editing/notating afterward. I learned a lot. And what an interesting life journey you’ve had! The palette for the hat you knitted is scrumptious. Thank you so much for this podcast!
Thanks for watching! Yes it is a lot of work but I am so enjoying the engagement and feedback so it's worth it!
I am really enjoying your podcast! Loved learning about the Shetland sheep. I look forward to hearing more about your designs and your sewing.
Thank you!
Gudrun! I guess it took me a few weeks to find you, but I’m so glad I did. I love your designs, have made a few, and have the book you wrote with MJM. Brilliant beginning here, please carry on and thank you very much!
I’m a new subscriber.
Thanks!
I love your podcast, Gudrun! Thank you! I also, as you know, love all of your work and patterns and designs. You are a treasure.
Aww thanks Susan! You are very sweet and I appreciate you watching!
Lovely! I suggest you sewing a top using the Hinterland dress pattern, they've put a tutorial on how to hack the pattern. I've sewn some last summer and they are a keeper (and a good introduction on how to sew the dress, which I think you'd love :) )
Thanks! I do see that one come up a lot!
Morning Gudrun really enjoyed the explanation of the two jamisons and Shetland wool. But I must admit to being mesmerised between your jumper and the artwork behind you. Never attempted colour work but your jumper so tempting and more info on the artwork please, and dh books. ❤
Thanks! I'll share more about the artwork (and books) as it does have significance to my story!
Yay, New Zealand! I love and sun and knit here. Love what you do ❤
Hello, so glad i found you! Is your name Gudrun? This is very interesting and informative!!! And now I need to plan a trip to Shetland! 😂 My LYS does carry your yarn and I will definitely be using it in some upcoming projects. Take care ❤
Yep! My name is Gudrun!
I very much enjoyed your 2nd episode. You look totally in the groove of podcasting - I felt like we could be talking in your living room. I’m looking forward to episode 3. harpingjanet
Thank you! Glad I looked at ease! Once I get going it feels fine!
Enjoyed hearing about you and learning new things. It was another cozy chat. Thank you for sharing. 🌺
Just beautiful. Thank you from Texas
You're welcome!
This was a warm and cozy way to spend part of my snowy Saturday. As always, the podcast was oh so inspiring. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you!
SF horrible choice of a place to live!
Love your book!
Thank you for a wonderful video. Can I ask do you have plans to publish the riggies cardigan as a separate pattern , I can only find a few stockists of the book but postage to where I am is crazy. Thank you
Yes I can publish the patterns individually in October of this year!
@ lovely. Will keep an eye out. Thank you
Porty - in all of the iterations - has been in my favourites list since forever. It’s so pretty 💙 2025 is the year to knit it! I’m going to Woolly Good Gathering in April and hope to choose colours for it in person (will you be there??)! So delighted you’ve started this podcast 😊
I really want to go but I will have just returned from a long trip to New Zealand so I think I'll have to skip this time!
Thank you, Gudrun, for all your information. I Have not done very much colorwork and really want to do some. Your insights will be so helpful. I plan to try the porty pullover in shades of gray and black. You will be a very good spokesperson for Jamieson's.
Oh that will be a pretty porty!
I learned so much about Shetland sheep in this video! Really fascinating. I’m so enjoying your channel! ❤❤❤ What a great story about the house you’re living in. It certainly feels like it was meant to be.
It does!
Love your outfit today and enjoying your videos!
Thank you!
Hi. Loved your podcast ❤
I also found the first episode in my suggested videos, I took a look at your face and said omg gudrun Johnston has a TH-cam channel?! I love the little call outs in the video like the sheep saying I'm nimble! I laughed out loud for real 😂 also I live in an old new England farmhous in new Hampshire I didn't know we were neighbors!
Thanks for appreciating my attempts at humor!
I’m currently dipping my toe into colour work gloves (Nancy Bush’s Lumesadu) but got so involved in the chart I zoomed past the thumb opening! So am turning into long Mitts. Am using Spindrift as bought some ages ago to have a play with (as have your Shetland Trader book 😍). Really enjoying my little adventure ❤
I bet those mitts will be lovely!
@ thank you! Frogged a few times so far as wasn't happy with the shape but love the colours which are mainly cocoa and coral ❤️
Didn’t know you were in Mass. I too live here, in central Mass. Enjoyed the podcast, looking forward to more.
Thank you!
