    I like your list of tunes, Denis. I am playing Cajun Cookin' in the big band, be more gentle on the trumpet section next time, eh. Lol.

    I have the V16 M9 (.120 tip like you are using here) on trial from Vandoren in LA. This is for a Conn 12M. Hoping the intonation will work well after the horn is set up properly.

    Professor DiBlasio, As the great Johnny Griffin claimed to be the fastest tenor in the west, you are undoubtedly the fastest baritone anywhere, ever... Which leads to a question ( brought about by the Charlie Parker Omnibook ) which mouthpiece/reed combo provides the fastest response on bari in your experience? Trane complained that once he wrecked his Link with a file he lost velocity ( not detectable by the layman... ). Thanks for yor thoughts. John

    Mr DiBlasio for an awkward reason i cannot generate a single phrase on "Watermelon Man" than i can do in more demanding tunes (concering their chord progression, or the rhythmic or the melodic variety that may have)...what might be an explanasion for this one? Many tunes have a "hidden" harmony behind a simple chord progression, that a rookie player might not understand. I mean some tunes are major to minor, within the form...bluesy tunes are more easy-to-handle, while somebody can stick around a blues scale or a very few chords and make solid phrases, in time, expressive and with a nice tone! Thank you in advance.Greetings from Greece!

    That's because it's the Same mouthpiece the sizing doesn't change the sound it's just a preference for some players

    • @spearmintt1342
      @spearmintt1342 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually it does, slightly. The B9 is naturally a little louder, but the B7 is a little bit darker. You can't hear the difference because, as the description says, "Recorded on August 27, 2010, using a Flip Video CAMCORDER." (Camcorder =~ Professional)

    • @thejazzyfizzle99
      @thejazzyfizzle99 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, the sizing of the mouthpiece changes the tone of your sound. the sizing also changes your limits on how loud or soft you can go.

  • @1DDBBBB
    @1DDBBBB 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sometimes its easier to think of either the singing OR the note the flute plays. Usually I think about the voice first but in this case I would focus on the flute since it wants to jump the octave. Tricky little bugger isn't it?

  • @1DDBBBB
    @1DDBBBB 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Rebekah Sorry for not getting back. I'm trying to be more on top of that. The audition will usually have requirements in that regard as you no doubt have found out by now. How did you do?

  • @1DDBBBB
    @1DDBBBB 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good question. Not sure what the best answer is. For me it was always concert when comping on piano. See I play flute also which is in concert and was always used to transposing when playing tenor or bari sax. This came from having to read off the piano part when playing in a wedding band for years.

    With regard to learning the chords of a tune, if you play an instrument thats not in the same key as the piano (like an Eb saxophone) which key should you practice the chords in? The piano or your instrument?

  • @1DDBBBB
    @1DDBBBB 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It doesn't really matter unless you are seriously thinking about being a jazz pianist. What you want to keep in mind is this. Play the root with your left hand in the bass clef range and with the right hand play the third and seventh with your right hand. With your right hand try and keep middle C as close to the middle of the two notes in your right hand. Good luck!!

    Jeez, why do I keep hearing Coltrane when Denis plays out of time? What I guess I'm trying to say is that the out of time ideas still sounded pretty interesting even though they were not in lock step with the rhythm section on the play-a-long track.I'm NOT saying that Trane had bad timing, Lord have mercy!
