This is a pretty neat system!
Incredible work
Sick man!
This guy gets it
this is the video essay version of the essay from the kid at the back of the class who leaves the exam room first and gets a D-
Everything in Zeroranger is just telegraphed so goddamn good as well It’s one of the most fair games I’ve ever played
It's great
As great as this games way of handling difficulty, the first reason for making this game approachable was lost on me after having to restart the game 8 times after THAT boss fight Still beat it, at the cost of sanity
oh, I actually miss this upload somehow :0
Cool channel, always awesome to see ZR content. You in the ZR discord?
Technically yes but I don't check it actively
@@massim0g nice, like I said I always like finding ZeroRanger videos. Also are u aware a bunch of us are making a huge ass repaint of the game?
@@poyobotyahoo7494 I was not, I hope that goes well!
The opening scared me lmao. Appreciate you showing love to my favorite game dawg
Nice, glad I found your channel!
😳👍🏽 This level took me over a 30 minutes to beat
NOT MY ROLLOUT!!!! Consider this run verified, programmers just can't be beat!
This reminds me of kings quest 3
Love the movement tech you got here. It's kinda tight, but I could see some extra room for improvement with enough practice. Gonna be exciting to see us possibly hit sub-1.49.100!
magnificent
Bro this guy is a real pro gamer.
It's a shame you'll stop making videos, i really like your style. Will check out the demo tho, seems dope
you're a shmup, good video tho with a dunkey shoutout
Game looks awesome!
Not gonna lie, I subscribed expecting high quality ZeroRanger content, but this is fine too :D
It also helps that you don't have to start from stage 1 every time you run out of continues.
One walkthrough titled the game “The Undertale of schmups.” for some reason.
Yes, quite the strange opinion. I think most experts would agree that Undertale is the Undertale of schmups.
@@massim0g Not really a shump though.
@@massim0g I don’t think he’s wrong.
Great videos
I think you missed on one other key difference. ZeroRanger, unlike other Shmups, __does not penalize you for continuing.__ It's a tragically common trope to "lock people out" of the ending/completion if they don't play and win in a single run from the start. ZeroRanger abandons that. You can start from any level you've reached, with any weapon you've unlocked which you could have in that stage. That, in addition to the intro that shows you that it's ok to die, is what makes this game so approachable. On its own, without that forgiveness for errors, it would still drive many people away. If I had to 1ccc the whole game just to complete it, I wouldn't have the 100 hours in it I do. I wouldn't have even had 10. The instant the game says "Beat it in one go or it doesn't count", it's going to lose a ton of potential players. I think what the creators of this did is find the perfect balance that can satisfy veterans while also introducing new players to the game without being condescending or too easy for them. Amazing game overall.
Late to the party but the second you die and the continue screen pops up its accompanied by the voiceline "please continue", it wants you to keep on
tried the timeline, beat up my pet monsters, 4/10 would highly recommend
Unfortunately, the offer for a 24.99 value reply has expired. However, for being the first to review the timeline, please accept this consolation reply.
1:58 me after doing literally anything to my games also cool vid.
Easily the most approachable shmup. If I were to recommend a shmup to someone that's not very familiar with the genre so that it's beatable enough while still being able to "get" it, it'll be this one
I really didn't think too much about the framing. You're right! Damn good video! I might also add that, mechanically, It's nice the game puts you back at a checkpoint when you use a continue, because otherwise it can feel really cheap to just resume from when you died. With the checkpoint system, even casual players have a nice progression through the story.
It's not a bullet hell per se, it's definitely a shmup though
Nice video. I still think there's much more cover about the topic but I liked it regardless. Also worth saying I came for ZeroRanger and stayed for the intro.
I have very much enjoyed playing ZeroRanger and was glad to see this interesting video (from a channel that doesn't appear to have become very known at all, which seems unfortunate) about it. May you attain enviewingment.
So the game you are making something like fire emblem + age of empires? Seems fun! Maybe I'm oversimplifying it, but looks cool
There's a lot of fire emblem inspiration in the combat yeah, it's kinda meant to be a mix of that with fighting game elements. Also, I'm just focused on making the combat system right now but I'm aiming to make the full game closer to a JRPG. You can watch my last devlog to get a good overview of the game concept.
That's a pretty neat idea for a combat system. I feel like it would be a hell of a challenge to balance stuff like CC or DoT effects. It's already so powerful generally and I feel it would impact the game play here even more. Sounds like it could be a blast in Multiplayer having to predict the other player's movements and to have every chunk on a timer or something. Have you played Frozen Synapse? I feel there are some similarities there. Keep it up! Subbed and looking forward to the next one.
I have looked at frozen synapse, but I feel like that falls more into the subgenre of "make a big plan the execute it". I'm going more for something where things are constantly changing, such that you need to always be reacting and shifting tactics. Multiplayer could be interesting but my end goal is to create a compelling singleplayer experience, so I'll be focusing mostly on PvE balance-wise. This is just an initial idea, so I'm excited to see how well traditional rpg mechanics like the ones you mentioned translate into this new system. There are several possibilities and picking the best combination of mechanics along with the best interpretation of each is certainly gonna be a fun challenge. Thanks for the sub!
Nice devlog, i really enjoyed it :D Also any feedback for my channel would be appreciated :)
Your combat system of fusing turn based and real time elements reminded me a bit of the time system in John Wick Hex. It's not the best tactics game, primarily cause you only have one character in your "party", but the time based mechanics are super neat. It is clever in how it translated the John Wick movies to a turn based tactical game.
Interesting. It's not exactly what I'm going for but there are enough similarities that I feel like I could take some cues from the UI/UX.
i would quit too if i game overed to cirno
I mean she's the strongest after all.
One of the best Bullet Hell games I've played, can confirm it does everything right. It's the same aura as Celeste, the game tells you it's normal to die, don't give up, you'll make it. It's not that difficult though. Kind of wished ZeroRanger got the attention it deserved. Also, nicely done video.
Hey! I just finished zero ranger, does anyone have any recommendations on what to play next? I enjoy shmups but I’m very bad at them.
Maybe try a Touhou game? I started with the 6th one, Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.
I suggest the Tale of Alltynex. (3 games), Graze Counter. They are easier, and not the sledgehammer to the face difficult that's touhou. Avoid anything made by Cave, just search up DoDonPachi or Mushi-hime-sama TLB, you'll see why.
@@atlasdarkstone9361 Pretty much this. Cave games are excellent but they're STUPID difficult. Defo worth checking out down the line but not to start with. Also to add to the suggestions, Blue Revolver, Escatos, Ginga Force and it's Sequel too. These are all REALLY excellent
I recommend Hellsinker and Suguri
@@atlasdarkstone9361you won't even see the Tlb in those games unless you've already mastered the game (or if you're just spamming save states). Mushihimesama and deathsmiles are pretty approachable, and dodonpachi is manageable, but it's probably best to play some touhou games beforehand.
Thoroughly enjoyed the video. It's really disheartening to see this game rarely getting any attention or coverage elsewhere.
What a pleasant video this was. Thank you for playing! Also, that intro, how.
Thank you for the awesome game!
Thanks for all the anime references!
