HOT NEWS! Tesla just increased the charging speed of the LG battery E5D based vehicles. The increase in charging power is 10kW to 25kW between roughly 10% and 90% state of charge. At the end of the vide you will find the charging curve in comparison with some previous sessions. From 6% to 90% I charged now (60kWh) in just 40 minutes! Tesla battery "Overheating" explained

During my V3 Supercharger session in Timisoara - Romania, I was prepared to see a "record" fast charge session. I was getting 257 kW for a split of a second (quite good for the LG Battery), however after about 15 minutes the charging power started to be limited. Just to give an indication, normally around 45% SOC I would be getting around 100kW however, on this session I was only getting 45kW. ...

    Does the batteries recharge themselves while driving? (like a normal hybrid car)

    • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@vibe39 yes, when breaking the car will regenerate and charge batteries. In addition is worth mentioning that there are three driving modes that affects the battery charging: E mode - the car will drive on battery until is completely drain after that it will switch automatically to Normal mode which keeps the battery somewhere above 10-20% state of charge and then you have Charge mode which you force the ICE to charge the battery all the way up to about 80-90%.

    • @vibe39
      @vibe39 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ZEFElectric that one with the ICE is the B mode?

    • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@vibe39 no. B mode is like keeping the gears engage all the time (no free rolling). The modes I mention you select via a button on the middle console. B-mode you select by pulling down the shift stick - in other cars this is Sport and the car will use engine breaking a bit more than normal. Not to confuse but in this car there is another button GTE which activates the most sportive driving mode of the car - ICE engine power will be combined with electric, better response to acceleration so on - is simply a different car.

You should consider these as they can add up some amount. Other tips, check if the car had all the regular maintenance that it needs to including oil in gearbox which is critical for this type of DSG (I believe is every 60tKm).

    Very thorough and extremely useful. I am looking at a 2021 model tomorrow with about 40,000k on the clock. They are changing the discs and pads on the rear but all I can detect is a small lip on the disc. Even for a conventional car I would expect 60,000k between disc/pad changes but then again I have never worn a clutch out. Am I a ninny driver haha??

      @ZEFElectric 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you and welcome here. When I give my GTE back to leasing at almost 140.000 km, the break disks and pads looked like new. The regenerative breaking on the GTE (if used properly) does the job instead of the friction breaks. So, yes, changing disks at 40.000 sounds a bit odd to me unless they are changed for different reasons e.g. long period of the car not being used. Good luck with choosing the car!

      Evening ZEF, not sure if you can help but before test driving the car today I asked the company to charge her up so that I could check the range on battery only: 19 miles only! I was about to walk away from the deal but after a deliberative discussion we came up with the idea of testing battery health via the OBD. Batt state of health 92.7%, max cell V 3798 mV, min cell V 3793mV, batt charge status 63.6% The difficulty is in the personalised data processing which provides the individual driver with expected range based on their driving habits. Apparently it can take two weeks to adjust to a new driver. During that period uncertainty exists, the transaction is £21,000 plus and there is no financial recourse! Bloody hell haha!

    • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MaxPlankton let me try. Reading your message, it’s suggesting that you did actually not drive 19 miles but was the displayed range. Please confirm! If you drove the car and got 19 miles out of it, is probably good ish depending on the driving stile, climate so so. If is displayed range let me share how it was in my case. My car had driving profiles (I think is an option) and if I remember correctly, the profiles were ECO, NORMAL, SPORT and Custom. I noticed aspects like lights, engine steering, climate control was behaving different between these profiles. You will ask what this has to do with display range? Well, a lot. For instance, when the car was brand new, the maximum displayed electric range was 53 but, only if the car was in ECO with AC off! When turning the AC, the displayed range dropped substantially (partially dependent on the outside climate) so much that in NORMAL with AC on the max displayed E range with full battery was in low 40 Km. When the car was 1 year old, there was a software recall by VW and I recall “loosing” something like 5 km of max displayed range just like that… In reality, driving like a nanny, no wind, straight roads (nonstop and go traffic), no AC I could get about 48KM of E range when was brand new. Most important, in my case, the car did not seem to adjust the displayed E range based on previous driving stile - it did on the overall total range, GOM but never on the E range (that was 4 years ago and I do not know if VW change that but I really doubt that is the case). 93% state of health sounds OK ish considering that in the first years these batteries degrade the most rapid (aging). Two advices for you: 1. Ask the company to charge it again to full, go there when is full (shown also on the WeConnect app - if available), turn the car in the most economic mode, turn off AC and read the E range. If time allows and weather is dry and not too windy (I know that can be a challenge in UK) take it for a “nanny” drive. In 30 mins you would know the real E range. 2. Considering the price tag, have you considered a full EV? I drive a Tesla Model 3 after the GTE Variant and I tell you, M3 offers a lot of space and joy. I hope this helps!

    I just bought it for my self same fully loaded please I need advice which mode to drive the car which automatically changes I mean hybrid mode or normal mode which changes it self petrol to electric it self I mean self charging is it like Toyota Prius as I have Prius aswell and I love it don’t have to worry about any thing just drive normal mode also last question how many km you do on full tank

    • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Letseatbyaky welcome here! GTE ia a plug in hybrid and if the battery is at a certain charge level (something like above 10%) the car will start in the default mode “E drive” meaning full electric. However, if the charge level is lower or the car needs additional torque, it will automatically switch in “Normal” which is the typical hybrid drive you are used to from Prius. In this mode, the combustion engine will switch on and off when needed. So, no need to worry about, the car will do everything for you but my advice is not to keep the battery drained completely for a long period of time. With a full tank on German highways long trip I manage to do easy about 850-900 Km following the traffic with some areas with speed restrictions but also some sportive drives. I hope this helps and I wish you many kilometres without troubles in your fully loaded GTE ;) Subscribe snd stay tuned!

    Hello. I liked your review. I am browsing ads for passat gte. I will use it as a family car, apart from going to work every day 20 km in both directions, we will also go out of town. That's my question, how do the two engines behave. What expense should I expect?

    • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      GTE is a fantastic family car. It offers a lot of space and comfort while in the same time is economical but also sporty when needed. The switch between the ICE/Electric drive is smooth and hardly noticeable - the electric engine is inside the gearbox so technically is not a switch as such but they work together in hybrid mode. For your every day usage scenario, if you want to drive only on electric, you will need to charge the car on both destinations as you will not be able to drive both directions only on Electric. If you have access to a domestic 220v socket will do the trick and that is generally the most economic way to charge the GTE these days. I do not know your local energy prices but count on approx. 5-6 kwh/20 km consumption on pure electric (AC and weather accounted for) and be aware that some public chargers these days have some hidden costs like: session starting fee, time limits or overstay fees and generally prices on public charging are quite high. Fuel consumption it depends on many aspects and I was never able to estimate it on short journeys or city driving as most of these for me were driving electric. On long journeys, I could easily drive 850-900Km with 50L tank (without being completely empty) on German highways following the traffic and some sections of high speed. I hope this helps!

    Thank you very much for this very useful report. It is reassuring that the GTE seems so trouble free. Did you record the petrol consumption? I am looking for a 3 to 4 year old GTE, which should absolutely have the matrix IQ-light and the parking camera. Unfortunately, although the camera is often stated in advertisements, the IQ-light (which should automatically and temporarily black out the LEDs that could blind other traffic, and according to your review works perfectly) is rarely mentioned. Is there any way to spot this option in the car’s papers? Thanks again!

    • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello, welcome here! For me it was somewhat difficult to measure fuel consumption as most of my short distance driving was on full electric or a mix. Maybe the most relevant would be to say that my usual holiday drive was to have a full benzine tank at the NL/DE border on A12, drive all the way to Linz and still be left with 50-100km of range. So, let's say about 900km on decent highway driving following traffic and some speeding zones. I learned recently that my car had "adaptive LED" not really Matrix, difference being that "adaptive" seem to have some kind of mechanic way to follow cars while matrix is by turning on/off various elements of the light. Well, I can tell you the "adaptive LED" was already fantastic treating that shadow around upcoming it traffic in front. I do not believe you can identify that option from the papers of the car but is quite obvious on the photos by looking at the lights design. In some countries is part of some of the packages but you need to be familiar with the naming. 3-4 years old is 2020+ which is about 4-5 years after the model of the car on the video and I believe VW added few improvements on these newer cars (e.g. better connectivity modules). I hope this helps and good luck with the purchase!

      Hi JP, welcome here. I go to RO few times with a Tesla. Having said that, I prefer Tesla superchargers but despite them expanding there are still some areas that you will not reach. Dutch charging providers covers some chargers in Romania but is limited to few and they are quite expensive to use in that way (I believe it depends what provider but I can tell you with Shell Recharge the coverage is limited, keep on changing and relatively expensive). I suggest you create few accounts with the following apps/providers: E-Charge/renovatio (ok coverage, they ask for money in advance), Enel X Way, EVConnect (crap app but good prices or free depends where you go), Polyfazer (crap app but good prices in some areas generally for AC, you can activate ALTEX chargers and some installed by city administrations). In addition, I suggest to get the PlugShare app to see where are the chargers in the area you travel and in the description of the most you can see what apps are used to activate them. I hope this helps.

      Hello and welcome here! In one of my review about the GTE I mentioned that it was the time for me to give back the car to the lease and replace it with a full electric car so, I no longer have that car for +3 years now. In general, I still see them around quite a bit and they seem to age well if maintained and used correctly. You should definitely look at the maintenance done on that car (regular DSG oil exchange is a MUST) and check if and when the timing belt was changed. Battery degradation as such, as long as you are in the 60-70% area you should be OK at that age/milage. I hope this help and good luck with the acquisition.

      Yes, it was the edge of the other door hitting my car. Sentry mode capture it and was claimed on the others insurance. Since that incident, I got another two debts - much smaller but still. There are many careless drivers around but somehow the shape of the Model 3 doors are also sensible to such hits (other cars seem to have the doors somehow more rounded in that area where you would usually get such a hit and by that they absorb such shocks without a dent in the metal).

      With a full talk of Passat GTE (50L benzine and full charge), I could easily drive above 800Km on highway journeys (German highways 120-130Km/h with many speed restrictions due to roadworks or/and “stau” but also some “burst” areas with speed above160Km/h). One of my “routine” was to fill tank at Shell A12 in The Netherlands and re-fill in Austria just at the border (cheaper over there - Turmöl, Achleite) ~750 Km or even in Linz ~850Km (and still not be on complete zero). That should give a fair indication of REAL consumption on highway.

      When the car was delivered new, it came with a domestic charger that you can plug to your standard domestic plug at home and to the Type 2 charging port of the car. So, if you have that charger, nothing else is needed except a good electrical connection handling 10 AMPs and you will be able to charge the car from 0-100 in about 4,5 yours. If you wish to charge in about 3 hours (fastest you can get in the GTE), you will need to consider a stand alone Type to charger which I will not recommend considering the costs and little gain that will bring, I hope this helps!

      Hello, welcome here! During summer time on hot days when the car is parked straight in the sunshine, it can easily go above 50 Celsius inside the car (without having the “cabin overheating protection” on which I hardly do). I did not count exactly but it takes about 3-5 minutes for the car to cool down to about 23 Celsius. Remember, this car is equipped with octovalve+heat pump meaning the cooling system is dimensioned to also cool down the battery pack while charging at power of +200KW. One aspect I noticed is that setting temperature to 21 Celsius in Winter is comfortable however, in the summer setting anything below 23 Celsius will make you freeze inside. It seems to be getting better with the updates over the last year but I still find myself adjusting inside temperature from time to time. I hope this helps and I’m at your disposal for more questions. Cheers.

      @ZEFElectric 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello, welcome here! If I understand your dilemma correctly, you are looking at TDI vs GTE. Considering the purpose for your use, I imagine running cost is an important factor to consider. You will need to look at aspects like road tax (in many countries Diesel cars are highly taxed while hybrids are incentivised), maintenance costs/frequency (I believe diesel is generally a bit more expensive to maintain and on GTE you will hardly have to change breaks due to the regenerative breaking), fuel costs in your country (in many countries diesel is cheaper vs benzine) and charging capabilities/costs domestic/public/pricing (not a major aspect as the range with a full charge is not that big but it can contribute to some savings over time). You might also want to consider a second hand full EV considering the main purpose of your usage. Following some internet reviews, for instance Hyundai Ioniq (classic Ioniq) seems to age quite well and within your budget. I hope this helps.

    Hi, thanks for the video! I'm considering buying this car, year 2020, but i don't have at home or at work a charger. So, most of the times i would use it like an hybrid car. • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello and welcome here! Without charging the GTE from an external source, the car will simply behave like a standard hybrid car. You will still benefit from the regenerative breaking and occasionally some silent drives but the combustion engine will kick in most of the time and you will not benefit from extended periods of silent drive. In terms of power, as long as you have the equivalent of 5-10 Km display range energy in the battery (15-20%) you will get the full power of GTE. On long journeys you do not “loose” much as the electric range is quite limited anyway. I hope this helps, subscribe and stay tuned!

    Hi, whats the car like if you just drive in hybrid mode? How long does the battery last?

    • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In hybrid mode the car will behave as any other hybrid - keep kicking on and off the ICE engine depending on the driving conditions. When breaking, the car will use regenerative breaking to recuperate that energy and the process is quite smooth once you are used with. The transition between electric and hybrid drive is very smooth so that you hardly notice when the ICE goes on/off. In hybrid drive, the car will try to keep the battery charge level around 10-20 km of displayed range.

    • @ZEFElectric
      @ZEFElectric ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you and welcome here! If you have access with the car to a domestic socket, in my book that is best option for charging Passat GTE at home using the domestic to Type 2 adapter that usually comes with the car. Passat GTE does not really have option for fast charging so on domestic socket it takes about 4,5-5 hours for a full charge vs ~3 hours on 3,7kW (or powerful) AC Type 2 charger. If you plan to install a domestic Type 2 charger (in my book not needed for Passat GTE) you might want to consider a 7,4kW charger as that will be useful for a future full BEV car. Depending on your daily usage, you might want to limit the times you charge to 100% or at least schedule the charging in such a way to reduce the time the battery stay at 100% (they say that helps reducing degradation). Most important, don’t keep the car at 0%! Other than that, you can control the charging current (therefore power) in order to reduce the load on your domestic circuits if you have plenty of time available for charging (overnight for example). If your energy price is variable or you have solar panels you might also want to take advantage of that. I hope this helps.

I’m not aware of any major charge speed increase (the “break” point to drop below 100kw power is still around 55% SOC) but they did several adjustments on the overall thermal control to maximise overall efficiency (e.g. I noticed when is not that cold outside is no longer preheating the battery with the statues but probably with the heat pump). On the other hand, in practice, I try to SLOW DOWN charging speed because usually is too fast and me/family is not ready before the car is ready during our stops and I assume it also helps a bit on limiting degradation. Have a 2018 passat non GTE, love the space and the consumption but a GTE would be nice to have!

    hi, I'm thinking about buying such a car, I've never had a hybrid before and I don't really know what the real range of this car is and what mode is best to drive it to make the car economical over long distances. a simple question: refuel a full tank of fuel and charge electricity to full, how long will I drive this car and what mode should I choose? will I get to my vacation on the highway 1000 km? how does the fuel burn look like? what mode to choose to make the car as efficient as possible, I get in and want to drive as many kilometers as possible and not have to press a million buttons to set the optimal driving form, I know it's probably stupid questions but I really have a riddle with it :) Regards

      Hello, welcome here! There are plenty of similar questions on the comments of this video which I will recommend you to read however, here are some specific answers to you. There are four ways that select the “behavior” of the car: 1) There is a selector button for driving modes next to the “gear shifter”. This selects the “E-mode” (driving just on Electric motor), “Hybrid” (car will switch between ICE and Electric or/and both), “Charge” (car will charge the battery from ICE and increases regenerative breaking); 2) There is a handy GTE Button in the console area which will put the car in the most sportive mode; 3) By pulling the “gear shifter” down, you put the car in “B-mode” which is increasing regenerative breaking - recommended for driving downhill or in the city as a “one pedal drive” (the car will not get to a full stop); 4) In the infotainment, you can select also some modes which are also linked to more than just the drive mode. E.g. lights, AC, steering so on. There are ECO, NORMAL, SPORT and INDIVIDUAL. I mainly use ECO for regular drives or NORMAL mainly in the night on dark roads. In ECO, matrix functionality of the lights(if equipped) will be turned off and the response of the AC is somewhat lagging but most of time is fine. Depending on your charging possibilities, in the city you will drive most of the time in E-Mode if you can charge the car before driving and this is the “default” mode of the car. When the state of charge is low or cold weather, the car will automatically switch to “Hybrid”. You can choose to override that and activate “Hybrid” a bit earlier if you know at destination there is no charging option. ECO is something in the general settings of the car (if the car has that option) which you will hardly need to adjust. On long journeys, you keep the car in “Hybrid” and enjoy, maybe occasionally switch to GTE when you want some action 😊 With a full tank of GTE (50L benzine and full charge), I could easily drive above 800Km on highway journeys (German highways 120-130Km/h with many speed restrictions lately due to roadworks or/and “stau” but also some “burst” areas with speed above160Km/h). City drive, I could do easily >2000 Km with a full tank (and a lot of charging) as I had periods of weeks/months when the ICE engine was not turning on at all 😊On a full charge, you will do 20-40km depending on the climate and driving style. I hope this helps, SUBSCRIBE and stay tuned!

    Its just LED High don’t Think its matrix

      I know for sure what I had :) My model had the Adaptive Matrix LED option which follows with a “U shape” of shade other cars ahead. You can’t miss it as it is more or less a “light show” on roads with no public lights. If you look at other models that has only LED you will also notice the interior of the headlights looks slightly different.

      @@ZEFElectric Passat B8 in this model year have only LED lights with DLA. It's not matrix. DLA light have completely different mechanism of shading vehicles, mechanical shade. Matrix light turning off and on the "diodes" themselves. Matrix lights are on another level.

      Ok, I see it now. I guess in real life the only difference is that Matrix will secure multiple shaded areas and traffic signs. Nice!
