A cold dry outboard can probably idle for 5 minutes before you have to worry about it. If you fly in hot off the lake and trim up and idle you got mabey a minute or two before real damage starts. The impeller will be fine unless it hasn't had water through it for months or it's old and should have already been changed as routine maintenance. They are built to take some abuse because yes, people suck at being owner/operators. The aren't made out of glass.

I'm not surprised that sailboat didn't capsize. It's not a really big boat and with only one sail up its keel weigh probably saved it. What surprised me it is with all that surf it wasn't swamped.
