Connecting People and Birds
In June 2022 Battlefield Falconry Centre came under new ownership and changed it's name to Battlefield Bird of Prey Centre. The Centre is located on the Battlefield 1403 Farm Shop site, Battlefield, Shrewsbury. The Centre is under the management of Lisa & Steve. Steve also owns Shropshire Falconry.
The Centre was bought to run alongside, Shropshire Falconry. Our aim is to grow the business as an Educational and Conservation Centre, allowing people to get up close to Birds of Prey. We intend to have a range of interesting topics for people to come along and participate in, Owl Dissection classes, Owl Nest box building and much, much more...

Steve Flying Viper at the Battle of Shrewsbury Medieval Weekend - Peregrine X Lanner Falcon
Viper the PereXLanner, a hybrid falcon part Peregrine and part Lanner.
Steve doing a great job flying Viper to the lure during the Battle of Shrewsbury Medieval Weekend at Battlefield 1403, where we are based.
The weather on the Sunday was much better than the Saturday, but a great weekend was had by all.
Nice and busy at the centre, and lots of people got to meet our birds and see them flying.

During our 1st birthday celebrations on Saturday 03/06/2023, our little (not so little anymore!) Tawny owls tried their first bath. It was a lovely day, and the sun was shining… so the little ones were shaded in their play pen, had a fan to keep them cool and seemed to enjoy splashing around in the water for the first time.

These two little beauties have grown up som much since the first video last week (but still incredibly cute!) so thought you might like a bit of an update. Steve flying Viper at the centre. Viper is a Peregrine X Lanner Falcon and he is a real beauty! Lots of interesting falconry facts from Steve in this one too! Flying displays, demos and bird handling sessions will be a regular feature at the centre this season, so come and see us soon.
February Half Term 2023 Owls and Falcons

Would you say that Harris's Hawks must be an excellent raptor to work with visitors? I have the impression that falcons are more impressive, but more difficult for people to get close to, and see properly, given that they tend to be ones that wait on, and/or fly to the lure from further away, whereas Harris's are more "sociable", maybe more reliable around groups of people, and will fly in closer proximity...
The kestrel is a great introduction to falcons for the young children, the right scale for them to handle, and so pretty! I had a thought about "scale": kestrels are kind of like house cats, peregrines like a lynx (or cheetah!), goshawk like a puma, golden eagle like a tiger... I guess that Harris's are a bit more like a wolf.. Able to survive on its own, but real masters of the hunt in a family group...
Are all those little language tidbits true? Certainly seem plausible, falconry being so long a part of civilization, and even of the "influential classes". Nice demo..
That's a "fly past" like a little jet fighter! Seems to like a low-level "nap of earth" style.. Beautiful raptor... Do you hunt it, also?
